Report of the trustees
For the year ended 31 December 2024
Reference and administrative information set out on page 1 forms part of this report. The financial statements comply with current statutory requirements and the constitution.
Structure, Governance and Management
Grand Plan is a charitable incorporated organisation, registered on 11 Feb 2021. It is currently managed by three trustees. Three trustees is our minimum number, and if the number falls below this, the remaining trustee or trustees may act only to call a meeting of the charity trustees, or appoint a new charity trustee.
Objectives and Activities
The object of Grand Plan is to promote art in all forms for the public benefit, by supporting and promoting the work and careers of artists from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.
This is achieved by raising funds from donors - a range of individuals, trusts, and other organisations - and using these funds to award £1,000 grants to people of colour in order to make a leap in their artistic practice.
The work we support ranges across the creative spectrum and can include e.g. poetry and spoken word, paintings, writing, music, photography, theatre, visual art, dance, film or other media.
Artists apply online for grants through our rolling application process. Every application is read by our team, who create a shortlist from which a panel of independent judges make final selections.
Achievements and Performance
The charity's ongoing operations throughout 2024 have been managed by Savena Surana and Siddharth Khajuria, with the support and guidance of the trustees.
Notable development work and achievements in the year ending 31 December 2024 include:

Awarding sixty further grants of £1,000 to artists across the UK, meaning that we have now awarded 164 grants since launching in 2021;
-
Securing over £120,000 in funding , including the second part of a major grant, and a further continuation grant, from Freelands Foundation;
-
Continued growth in both awareness of, and demand for, our applications. Over the course of this year’s rounds, a receipt of 2,974 applications for the 60 grants available , equating to c. 50 applications per grant available; and
-
We continue to support a rare breadth of cultural practice in our grant making, with this year’s grantees including artists who work across: audio, graphic novels, writing, Riso printing, sewing, film, music, theatre, installation, photography, poetry, jewellery, dance, gaming, publishing, sculpture, photography, archiving, painting, and more.

Financial Review
Total income for this accounting period was £122,500 (2023: £76,650), £58,350 (2023: £37,500) of which was unrestricted. The charity brought forward £46,940 in cash funds from 2023.
Total expenditure was £106,072 in this financial year (2023: £51,007). In addition to the £60,000 awarded as grants, the majority of costs related to the delivery of the grant-making programme, which entailed, for instance:

review of, and communication with, 2,974 applications, followed by final decision made by an independent panel of judges;
-
responses to applicant and grantee queries;
-
post-grant due diligence and evaluation; and
-
working with volunteers on data analysis and applicant support writing.
The charity held cash funds of £63,368 at the end of the year.
To-date, due to our smallness, the charity has had to strike a balance between grant administration and ongoing fundraising work. This continues to be true.
2025 Objectives
In 2025, Grand Plan’s objectives are to:
-
fundraise in order to re-start grant-making in summer, 2025;
-
conduct in-depth research with our grantees to better inform our understanding of what’s needed by the artists we support, and the impacts of this kind of micro-granting; and
-
through sharing knowledge, influence others – formal and informal educators, academics, commissioners, funders – to adapt and advocate for more inclusive grant-making practices.
Our reserves policy remains c. 6 months of core running costs, not including any grant-making.
Independent examiners
Godfrey Wilson Limited were re-appointed as independent examiners during the year, and have expressed their willingness to continue in that capacity.

To the trustees of
Grand Plan
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Grand Plan (the charity) for the year ended 31 December 2024, which are set out on pages 5 to 6.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

(1) accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or
-
(2) the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
