The financial statements comply with current statutory requirements and the constitution. ## **Structure, Governance and Management** Grand Plan is a charitable incorporated organisation, registered on 11 Feb 2021. It is currently managed by three trustees. Three trustees is our minimum number, and if the number falls below this, the remaining trustee or trustees may act only to call a meeting of the charity trustees, or appoint a new charity trustee. ## **Objectives and Activities** The object of Grand Plan is to promote art in all forms for the public benefit, by supporting and promoting the work and careers of artists from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds. This is achieved by raising funds from donors, and using these funds to award £1,000 grants to people of colour who want to make a new creative project. These projects range across the creative spectrum and can include e.g. poetry and spoken word, paintings, writing, music, photography, theatre, visual art, dance, film or other media. Artists can apply online for a grant through our rolling application process. Every application is read by our team, who create a shortlist from which a panel of independent judges make final selections. ## **Achievements and Performance** The charity's ongoing operations throughout 2023 have been managed by April Brown, Siddharth Khajuria and Savena Surana with the support and guidance of the trustees. Notable development work and achievements in our third year (ending 31 December 2023) include: - Securing over £75,000 in funding, including the first part of a major (c. £80,000) grant from the Freelands Foundation; - Pausing grant-making activities for c. six months to focus on fundraising and strategic activity, including: - the recruitment of an outstanding new programme manager, selected from 270 applicants; - conducting an accessibility review and refresh of our website; - refining our application process in response to insights from applicant and previous judges’ feedback; - changing the frequency of our grant-making rounds from bi-monthly to quarterly, allowing more breathing room for both applicants and judges, and allowing the latter to support a greater breadth of artists in each round; and - recruiting four new independent judges - Abigail Maria Sol, Balraj Samrai, Matthew Arthur Williams, and Zakiya Bishton - to succeed our second panel. - Awarding thirty more grants of £1,000 to people of colour to realise cultural and creative projects of any kind, meaning that we have awarded 104 grants between launch and 31 December 2023; - Continuing to grow awareness of the fund nationally, with over 6,500 followers on Instagram and, in our most recent round in Q4 2023, receiving 1,144 applications for the twenty available grants. This represented the greatest number of applications received in a single-round; - Continuing to award grants across a breadth of cultural practices, with grantees including: musicians; archivists; facilitators; painters; photographers; illustrators; make-up artists; educators; ceramicists; mosaic artists; dancers; writers and more. 2 ## **Grand Plan** ## **Report of the trustees** ## **For the year ended 31 December 2023** ## **Financial Review** Total income for this accounting period was £76,650, £37,500 of which was unrestricted. The charity brought forward £21,297 in cash funds from 2022. Total expenditure was £51,007 in this financial year, 59% of which was awarded as grants. The remaining amount was on costs related to administration of the charity including independent judges’ fees and programme management. 59% is lower than previous years, due to the temporary pause in grant-making to focus on fundraising activity. The charity held cash funds of £46,940 at the end of the year. To-date, due to its smallness, the charity has had to strike a balance between grant administration and ongoing fundraising and strategic work. ## **2024 Objectives** In 2024, Grand Plan’s Trustees will increase the amount of staff time dedicated to fundraising and strategic work. This is to support the longevity and scale of our activity, and to ensure financial reserves reach c. 6 months of our running costs (reduced by Trustees from 9-12 months). ## **Independent examiners** Godfrey Wilson Limited were re-appointed as independent examiners during the year, and have expressed their willingness to continue in that capacity. Approved by the trustees on 8 May 2024 and signed on their behalf by: Thomas Rosenthal - Chair 3 ## **Independent examiner's report** ## **To the trustees of** ## **Grand Plan** I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Grand Plan (the charity) for the year ended 31 December 2023, which are set out on pages 5 to 6. ## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## **Independent examiner's statement** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: - (1) accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or - (2) the accounts do not accord with those records.
