The objects as stated In its 8overning document, and for which the charity was established. are:
The advancement of the arts and culture, and the education of the public in the art of music, In particular but not
limited to chamber music, for the public ber)efit by:
al The presentation of concerts and other musical activities, chiefly as part of an annual festival in West
Somerset,. and

voung people)
The Trustees are aware of the Public Benefit provisions of the Chartties Art 2011 and of the guidance on them
published by the Charity Commission. They are satisfied that the objects and the activities of the Charty are within
the definitions of Charitable Purposes as set down in the Act, and in making decisions pertaining to this activity and
when exercisin8 any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant they have had dLbe regard to both.
Dun5ter Festlval carrles out its pvrpose to advance the arts and education for the public benefit by:
al organising an annual festival of high quality concerts and perforniances. including repertoire which
otherwise would not be performed wldely. which this year took place between May 27 and 28 2023.
bl working Wlth young people in schools, the elderly in care homes and those with speclal educatlonal needs in
day centTe5, and amateur musicians from a variety of walks of life. introducing them to new repertoire and
enabling them to enjoy music and develop and improve thelr musical Skills.
Achlevements & Performance
Across our 2024 community & outreach work we were able to provlde two day5 of choral workshops at Minehead
and Danesfield Middle schools, enga8lng Year 5 students and introducing them to the sound world and expressive
possSbilities of a cappella vocal music in sessions led by acclaimed vocal ensemble The Marian Consort. Students
were encouraged to think about how they can express themselves musically using their own voices through various
warm-ups, slnglng games and songs. These workshops were followed up with four subsequent days of coachinB
sessions led by experienced thoral animateur specialists, in which students learnt their parts In class groups for
performances of two contemporary choral works, specially devised tor their age 8roup. wlth a focus on the natural
world and our impart on it.
These were then performed in two final perfomiances lone at each school) involvin8 MO￿ than students sln8in8
alongside professional musicians las well as several hundred more as audience).
As has been experienced previously, implementing projects of thls nature Is always challen8lng and relies to an
extent on the goodwill of individuals in our partner organisations, as the environment within these partner
or8ani5ations (schools and carehomesl is one where stsff have many demands on their time and energy, and where
they are often overstretched and under-resourced.
This was particularly true this year, with Significant difficulties liaising WTth our schools partners, due to changes of
personnel and staff shortages (although we were not dirertly afferted by them, we were acutely aware that staff
shortages at both Senior management and class teaching levels led to unplanned short notice closure of schoolsl, but
the feedback from both staff and students wa5 hugely positive. and is excerpted below..

We also were able to organise perfo￿an￿S by Festival musicians in three care homes in Minehead. engaging
approximately 80 residents, staff and relatives. Our visit to Dunster Care lodge made a significant impact on resident
Eric, who engaged the musicians in several long conversations about the music and composers, revealing a
considerable knowledge and interest which surprised the staff. P4ain, feedback was hugely encouraging.
Our live festival from May 24 to 26 2024 comprised 7 events which tcKJk place both in Dunster1St George's Church
and the historic fithe Barn) and in Watchet. the latter hosted by our partner organlsation East Quay, a collaboration
which has proven successful in building audiences and reaching more of our local community with high-quality live
music.

Artists featured intluded Scottish female string duo Sequoia, pertussionist Delia Stevens and three tlme BBC Radlo 2
Folk Musician of the Year nominee Will Pound. vocal ensemble The Marian Consort and harpsichordist Stephen Farr,
performing a diverse range of styles and repertoire spanning eight centuries. One highlight was the choral workshop
event, which has again proven to be a popular format- this allowed local singers land some who had travelled
significant distances, Speaking to the Festival's growing reputation) to work with our ArtLStTrc Co-Director and choral
music expert Rory Mccleery in a friendly and relaxed environment

appreciative of the opportunity to experience what it is that makes Dunster FestNal so unique.
