## **Objectives & Activities**
The objects as stated in its governing document, and for which the charity was established, are:
The advancement of the arts and culture, and the education of the public in the art of music, in particular but not limited to chamber music, for the public benefit by:
- a) The presentation of concerts and other musical activities, chiefly as part of an annual festival in West Somerset; and
- b) Training and coaching for those from all demographics and age groups (particularly but not exclusively for young people)
The Trustees are aware of the Public Benefit provisions of the Charities Act 2011 and of the guidance on them published by the Charity Commission. They are satisfied that the objects and the activities of the Charity are within the definitions of Charitable Purposes as set down in the Act, and in making decisions pertaining to this activity and when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant they have had due regard to both.
Dunster Festival carries out its purpose to advance the arts and education for the public benefit by:
- a) organising an annual festival of high quality concerts and performances, including repertoire which otherwise would not be performed widely, which this year took place both in person between May 28 and 30 2021, and online with the three evening concerts filmed and made available through the Festival website from June 2021
- b) working with young people in schools, the elderly in care homes and those with special educational needs in day centres, and amateur musicians from a variety of walks of life, introducing them to new repertoire and enabling them to enjoy music and develop and improve their musical skills. Although COVID-19 made this work impossible to carry out in person in 2021, our target groups within the community were able to access high quality online music through our filmed concerts.
## **Achievements & Performance**
Dunster Festival 2021 presented a hybrid of both live in-person and online digital events: although born of the uncertainty of early 2021 (when our plans had to be finalised) we were adamant that all of our festival events, whether to live audiences or those watching online, should both further our aims as an organisation - namely to bring high-quality classical music into the local community and reach new audiences - and serve to showcase our music and the rich history of the local area to an international audience.
Our live festival from May 28-30 2021 comprised 3 concerts in St George’s Church from leading musicians - Daniel Pioro & Clare O’Connell, The Marian Consort, and Emma Brain-Gabbott & Rachel Wick - performing diverse repertoire spanning six hundred years, but with a particular emphasis on new music.
Our Digital Festival saw a staggered launch across June 2021, with three films offered on a ‘name your price’ basis through our website, as well as a live online Choral workshop, which involved participants from across Europe and Australia as well as the UK. Although the bulk of the material for each film was from our live concerts, the digital medium offered us an opportunity to provide context and insight not normally possible at a live event, and for The Marian Consort’s performance, the ability to site the Renaissance repertoire in historical locations with meaningful connections. To complete this integration of artists, music and place, we commissioned a new work from Ben Rowarth which incorporated the motto of Tudor baron of Dunster Sir John Luttrell.
We have been delighted at the response: our live events sold out, and our digital films have allowed us to reach new audiences both in West Somerset and across the world. Although we were unable to work with our target groups within the local community in person, our Digital Festival enabled us to reach them online and also to expand our festival community to a global scale, attracting favourable reviews in the national press:

_One other treasurable event: the committed advocacy and virtuosity of the violinist Daniel Pioro, with continuo support from cellist Clare O’Connell, at Somerset’s tiny Dunster Festival. Another major milestone for Dunster Festival in 2021 was attaining CIO status. With the support of the board of trustees, it is intended that this will mark the beginning of a period of growth and consolidation for the Festival, allowing us to expand our community-based work and emerge from the pandemic as a robust and forward-looking organisation.
## **Financial Review**
Dunster Festival is endeavouring, despite the difficult present financial conditions, to build up reserves equivalent to six months’ spending over the next two financial years. Our reserves at year end were £1,416.
