Chairman’s report to year ended 31[st] December 2021
As a result of the pandemic “lock downs” a group of likeminded people came together to discuss a big need in the village of Wethersfield. Rebecca Wilson was certain that quite a number of babies had been born during this time and that their mothers/fathers had not had the opportunity to socialise and neither had the babies. From her own experience as a mother of two young children, Rebecca felt great concern at the isolation experienced by such people. Another group affected by the lock downs was identified those elderly people living alone.
The small group decided that we should look into the formation of charity to promote social inclusion for the public benefit within the parish of Wethersfield by preventing people from becoming socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society by organising or assisting with the organisation of activities designed to entertain, educate, or promote a sense of community in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the condition of life of the said inhabitants. Wethersfield Community Activities was born on 1[st] February 2021.
Rebecca took the lead in the formation of Wethersfield Bump, Toddler and Baby Group. Both her personal experience as a mother and her professional experience brought a huge benefit to the setting up and running of the group. It was agreed that as a charity we would encourage social inclusion and that no-one would be excluded on the grounds of not being able to fund their attendance. We decided that we would run it on the basis of donations according to what people could afford. We were conscious that there are those in the village who struggle with children on their own. All are welcome, twice a week if they would like to as Baby Group runs on a Monday and Thursday morning.
Another group was also formed which we called Social Saturday. This takes place on the second and fourth Saturday mornings of each month. We offer cake, coffee and chat, with cake always being donated. People drop in, chat, read the paper and someone will lead a walk. Both groups are thriving and continue to grow.
We have also organised some bigger events. Rebecca ran the Kids Unlocked Festival which saw the whole village coming along with children and grandchildren. It was a successful and joyous event. Finally we organised the big Christmas Light Switch on. The start of Christmas in Wethersfield. The village hall houses a Christmas Fair, Brass Band on The Green, and a Nativity play performed by the
school. Hot dogs, burgers, mulled wine, hot chocolate. Lots of festive fun. The money taken went towards the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee which is planned for next year.
So we have been busy. As chair of the Charity I feel I must thank all the Trustees for their commitment and hard work but particularly so to Rebecca Wilson. She is unfailing in her support of mothers and children, and keeps running special group during the school holidays.
It is a privilege to be a part of this Charity and an honour to work with Rebecca, Ria, Sarah and Nick. May we continue to grow.
