Annual Report from the Trustees
Period 9[th] February 2021 to 31[st] March 2022
Introduction
This is the first report from the Trustees. Notification of our registration was received on 9[th] February 2021 and we had declared our financial year would end on the 31[st] of March, we were advised that we did not need to report until after 31[st] March 2022.
Most of the first year of operation was, to put it at its best, frustrating and disappointing. We had begun our application to register the charity in 2020 and the Charity Commission advised that like most other organisations they were affected by the Covid pandemic and lockdowns, and applications were taking much longer to process. We fully understood their problem and accepted it would take time.
For the same reasons, most of the main clearing banks were not accepting applications for any new business accounts because they were having extra work because of the problems being experienced by their existing clients. We recognised that even if the Charity Commission was able to complete our registration in this time without a bank account, we were not in a position to operate. Towards the end of 2020, the Charity Commission indicated that our application was progressing and there was news that some clearing banks were preparing to open new business accounts. We thought 2021 was going to be our launch year.
Immediately after receiving notification of registration, we contacted one of the first banks to start taking new accounts and which helpfully had a branch in Kidderminster where we are based. Unfortunately, whether because of a hangover from Covid or other reasons, there was the most appalling catalogue of errors; documents were lost, our governing document was lost twice, other things went astray, communication was non-existent and the bank had to be chased at every step. This meant that the process took until nearly the end of November and once again they forgot to tell us our account was open until we made another of our frequent calls to the complaints department.
We had hoped to start fundraising during the summer of 2021 and had made provisional plans, however, as chaos dragged on, we put everything on hold and given when our account was opened, we unanimously decided to leave any action until after Christmas and New Year 2022. Therefore, the period from January 2022 until the end of March 2022 has been busy bringing some of the plans we had put on hold into action, but there is little to show in terms of results in that period as the events and activities had not taken place.
At the time of writing, which is after the end of the reporting period, we feel that there is some momentum building in our activities although, like all other charities, we recognise that we are working in difficult economic times.

Activities
While we were unable to undertake any fundraising during most of our first year after registration, we had some outline plans for what we had thought we would do from the summer of 2021 onwards which we had in readiness for whenever we were able to start. We used the enforced down time to explore further where research was being done into the two conditions on which we intend to initially concentrate, Cholangiocarcinoma and Hydrocephalus in its antenatal development.
While Alane Harvey (wife and mother to the current trustees) had been ill, we had discovered some of the centres of research into Cholangiocarcinoma and also some other charities and organisations that are engaged in supporting research. We have therefore been in touch with some of these and will be supporting their work with some of our initial fundraising. While we will continue and, we hope, deepen our links with some of these organisations we will continue to look for others that may be undertaking work that could be potentially relevant.
Research into Hydrocephalus (which caused the death of James, son and brother to the current trustees) is ongoing in the UK and in many other countries, but we have yet to identify researchers sharing our interest in its antenatal development. There are several lines of enquiry which may be helpful and which we are continuing to pursue.
As we have already reported, we had developed some fundraising plans which had been put on hold. We began to bring these back into action in early 2022 and they form the foundations on which the momentum we feel now, in the early part of our second year, is based.
In December 2021 we received one donation of £30 which came from someone who had known both Alane and James Harvey and was pleased to hear that our charity was finally up and running. We were also asked to send a speaker to a local organisation to tell them about setting up a charity and what we were intending to do, which we did. The presentation was well received and a donation to our funds was made. This however did not arrive until after the end of the financial year and therefore does not show in the accompanying accounts.
Required information
Income and spending – Total income in the first financial year is confirmed as £30. No expenditure was made by the charity itself. Any expenditure in that period was relatively small, travelling, communications etc and was met by the trustees involved. No trustee has, or intends to make, any claim for these items.
Serious incidents – There were no serious incidents during this period.
Raising funds from the public – The charity did and does raise funds from the public. No professional fundraisers were used and none are currently engaged with the charity in any way. Equally, no commercial participators were or are involved with the charity.
Grants – The charity did not make any grants, nor did it receive any grants from national or local government or any other public or private body.

Income from outside the UK – None received or expected.
Operating area – The charity did not operate outside of England and Wales.
Trustee payments – No payments have been made to any trustee for any reason and no trustee intends to make any claims for any payments for any activity undertaken on behalf of the charity in this period. No trustee has received or been promised any other benefit from the charity.
Employees – The charity has no employees.
Volunteers – The charity had five volunteers during this period, the three trustees plus two others who with the trustees discuss and plan activities and then put them into operation.
Financial controls – The trustees have discussed financial controls and will review them again during the coming year as funds begin to come in and then expect to keep them regularly under review.
