**Trustees’ Annual Report for the period**
**4[th] February 2021 to 31[st] December 2021**
## **Aims & Purposes**
The aim & purpose of the Cranleigh Men’s Shed, is the promotion of social inclusion for the benefit of men living in the vicinity of Cranleigh.
## **Objectives & Activities**
Our objective is to combat loneliness and social isolation that may arise as a result of age or disability, by the provision of a workshop where men can meet and engage in activities together.
The Shed is open twice weekly providing facilities for members to make items mainly using wood either for themselves or for the Shed to sell at local events. The money raised provides for the purchase of materials and help towards running costs. Members work with others to produce items and learn new skills, make friends and enhance social contact.
When planning activities for the year the Trustees have taken into account the Commissions guidance on public benefit and in particular our main objectives of combatting loneliness and social exclusion. Members are encouraged to work on projects with others and also within small teams where they can interact, learn new skills and gain confidence. Members are encouraged to help others and transfer their knowledge. This also provides a safe and relaxed environment where members can share any concerns or problems and seek help, support and guidance from other members who may have experienced similar situations. The Trustees also seek out projects where the “Men’s Shed” skills can be used for the benefit of the wider Cranleigh Community.
## **Achievements and Performance**
## **Premises**
The “Shed” operates from a small stable building with the addition of a temporary gazebo erected in wet weather. Whilst this has worked reasonably well, there are limitations on the number of people that can be accommodated and a small waiting list for membership has existed for some time.
In July we receive a grant from The Community Foundation Surrey which provided funds for us to expand our workshop space, acquire additional equipment and increase the number of people we could accommodate for each session. On completion of the work, we were able to offer places to everyone on our waiting list raising our membership to 15.
We are fortunate to have a very generous landlord who supports the Men’s Shed programme by providing us with rent free space. However, the land is due to be sold and therefore new premises will need to be found in due course.
## **Community projects**
We have been able to use our skills to assist with community projects delivering a significant benefit for our members and for the community itself.
We were asked to clean and prepare 12 street bollards ready for decoration by local artists as part of a community arts project. More are planned for 2022.
A local school required our assistance to produce stage props for their summer production.
Our largest community project was the construction of a seat planter to be installed in the grounds of Wonersh & Shamley Green primary School. The seat planter was the focal point of a new garden for the children.
Members gained a great deal of satisfaction in being involved in these projects spending time and energy putting something back into the community.
## **Growing confidence and improving skills**
Members gained significant enjoyment from attending the Cranleigh Lions Carnival where products made by the group were sold. The group also ran a game of skill and fast reaction on behalf of the Lions raising over £60 for the Lions Charity. Interaction with members of the public both young & old definitely improved confidence and ouitlook.
To further support the Lions charity, members produced a number of items for the Lions to sell on their Christmas market stall. The sales were very successful and through this activity members built team relationships working together to fulfil orders, provided an income for the Shed funds whilst supporting the Lions in achieving their objectives.
Overall, a very successful year. Increased workshop space, increased membership, learning new skills, selling products we made and talking to the public, all adding to enormous pride and sense of achievement.
## **Financial review**
Total receipts from unrestricted funds were £3,934 including donations totalling £760 from Cranleigh Lions, and the family of one of our members who sadly passed way during the year.
Restricted donations of £1600 were received from the Community Foundation, Surrey which were noted in the financial statement.
Sales of products made in the workshop totalled £2,218
Members pay a monthly fee of £5 plus £1 for each session attended. The membership and session fees are designed to ensure that Shed costs for electricity, insurance etc is fully covered. The Trustees can waive these fees in cases of hardship.
The net result for the year was an excess of income over expenditure of £1,962. Restricted funds were fully utilised within the year.
## **Reserves Policy**
The Trustees have agreed to maintain a reserve of £1,000 to cover future rent, utilities & insurance. This ensures the Shed can continue to operate for a minimum of 12 months in the unlikely event of no income received.
## **Structure Governance & Management**
The shed constitution is based upon the Charity Commission model for a CIO. The Shed is controlled by a committee of 5 consisting of Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer plus 2 committee members. There are 3 Trustees. Elections for officers committee and trustees take place in January each year.
The Committee meet officially 4 time per year but many of the day-to-day decisions are made with members during the weekly sessions.
There are clear guidelines for the operation of the shed included in the workshop rules, of which each member has a copy. Members are required to undertake training on all tools that could constitute a risk, and to undertake refresher training on an annual basis.
## **Risks**
The land on which our current building stands, is due to be sold in the near future. However, our landlord has other properties and has indicated a willingness to assist us in relocating should the need arise. The Trustees therefore conclude that the risk of the shed not being able to continue is minimal.
