## **Our Aims and objectives**
## **Purposes, Vision and Mission**
Our charity’s purposes as set out in the objectives contained in the memorandum of association are:
- 1) to advance the education of the public in the subjects of sexual health, gender identity, relationships and other related topics through the provision of workshops, training and other educational materials.
- 2) to promote and protect the physical and mental health of the public by providing information and advice about contraception, sexually transmitted infection testing, menstrual health and mental health’s association with sex and relationships.
- 3) the promotion of equality and diversity for the public benefit by:
- (a) the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of gender and/or sexual orientation;
- (b) advancing education and raising awareness in equality and diversity.
Our vision is to improve people's physical health and emotional wellbeing, and give them the critical tools to develop or defend a more socially just society.
Our mission is comprehensive and inclusive relationships and sex(uality) education for young people which confronts taboos and social injustices. Our vision and mission fully reflect the purposes that the charity was set up to further.
## **Ensuring our work delivers our aims**
We review our aims, objectives and activities each year via the monitoring of key performance indicators. The review examines:
- what we achieved and the outcomes of our work in the previous 12 months;
- the success of each key performance indicator and the benefits they have brought to those groups of people we are set up to help;
- and helps us ensure our aim, objectives and activities remain focused on our stated purposes.
We have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aim and objectives and in planning our future activities. In particular, the trustees consider how planned activities will contribute to the aims and objectives they have set.

## **The focus of our work**
Our main objectives for the year continued to be providing inclusive and comprehensive relationships and sex education for young people and those that work with them. The strategies we used to meet these objectives included:
- Providing high quality relationships and sex education programmes to education institutions and specialist centres.
- Delivering specialist consultancy and staff continuous professional development training sessions.
- Collaborating with world-leading academics to contribute to research around relationships and sex education.
- Working in partnership with other organisations on best practice and innovation in relationships and sex education.
- Providing relationships and sex education resources for educators to use as part of their work with young people.
All our charitable activities focus on providing relationships and sex education and are undertaken to further our charitable purposes for the public benefit.
## **Who used and benefited from our services?**
School of Sexuality Education provides comprehensive and inclusive relationships and sex education (RSE) programmes. Our programmes cover the following seven key themes:
- Consent
- Sexual violence
- Relationships
- Reproductive and sexual health
- Puberty and the body
- Sex, bodies, and the media
- Identities
Our programmes are delivered as talks and workshops to young people through schools, colleges, universities, specialist centres, and youth groups. We also provide staff training and consultancy on relationships and sex education.
We have worked with over 540 organisations (schools, colleges, universities, youth groups as well as other charities) mainly in England, as well in Scotland and Wales. We work with young people predominantly in secondary schools, students, aged 11-18 years old.

## **Via schools, colleges, universities, specialist centres**
Our goal is to work with schools to develop or complement their existing provision on relationships and sex education.
The number of schools we work with is limited to our internal capacity and the number of facilitators available to deliver programmes. Demand for our services is met on a first come, first served basis, particularly to state secondary schools, however, we find that we are able to accommodate most schools at some point during the academic year.
We offer a tiered price model for schools, based on their budget and capacity for our programmes. The income directly funds facilitators delivering the work and charity’s activities. Independent schools are offered the higher tiers to subsidise costs for low-income or state institutions. This approach ensures that our work is accessible to all.
At the end of our workshops, students can provide feedback via an online survey where they are asked to complete questions based on the sessions they received that day. Finally, there are free-text boxes in which students can tell us what they liked or disliked about the workshop(s), and one thing they will do differently as a result of the workshop(s).

To maximise the impact of RSE, we have continued to provide a range of workshops for parents and caregivers to encourage transparency in RSE and support parents / carers to continue conversations at home.
## **Staff Training and Consultancy**
School of Sexuality Education provides teacher training to schools and universities, as part of their courses or continuous professional development. Our programmes include:
- Introduction to teaching Inclusive Relationships and Sex Education
- Current Policies, research and engaging parents & carers
- LGBTQIA+ Awareness
- Consent & Sexual Violence prevention
- Faith & RSE: An anti-racist approach
This year, we launched two new programmes:
- Teaching about porn: centring young people’s experiences
- Busting myths and taboos: And inclusive approach to teaching reproductive & sexual health
Feedback from staff training sessions are positive:

Another element of School of Sexuality Education’s work involves consultancy, which we offer to educational institutions, on research projects, or partner organisations.
Since 2019, we have been working with a consortium of academics from University College London, Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Leicester to better understand harms young people are facing online and offline.

The research collaboration, led by Professor Jessica Ringrose, found that 76% of girls aged 12-18 had been sent unsolicited nude images of boys or men. This project informed the ‘Modernising Communications Offences 2021’ report, and the research led to recommendations that were accepted and incorporated into the Online Safety Bill.
In 2020-2022 we worked with world-leading researchers at UCL, Anglia Ruskin University and University of Leicester to research teen’s current experiences of sexual violence both online and offline. From this research, we co-designed a suite of resources around the importance of trauma-informed practice, advice for parents and carers if their child experiences online harms and sexual violence prevention checklist for senior leaders. Following this project, in 2023-2024 a full report was launched to support these resources, “Equipping Young People - to Navigate Post digital Sexual Violence”. The report evaluated the impact of two workshops we co-created which had two aims:
- 1) educate students about sexual and gender-based violence in a post-digital context, and 2) equip them with digital defence strategies to stay safe online and practices enabling effective activism to challenge sexual violence.
As detailed in the report, the workshops were received positively by students and staff. For Workshop 1, 88.6% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that it improved their knowledge of sexual violence and the different forms it takes, while for Workshop 2, 92.1% agreed or strongly agreed that it improved their understanding of activism and how to challenge sexual violence.
## **The following activities further our charity’s mission and purpose for the year 2023-2024:**
- We launched a guide for schools, colleges and universities to understand inceldom and develop Relationships, Sex, and Health Education provisions that prevent misogyny.
- As part of our commitment to preventing sexual violence, we joined the End Violence Against Women (EVAW) coalition as members.
- School of Sexuality Education were invited to speak about best practice in relationships, sex and health education by the British embassy in Prague and our partners Konsent in the Czech Republic.
- We responded to public consultations on policy in education: The Trans and gender non-confirming guidance and draft RSHE guidance.
- School of Sexuality Education were successful in a tender with West Berkshire council to provide inclusive sexual health training to educators and professionals working with young people in the region for 3.5 years.

## **Funding**
## **Income from grants -**
## **Ovingdean Hall - Grant Instalment 3 - restricted - (£10,000)**
We received a grant from Ovingdean Hall Foundation, (provided in instalments), for our pioneering project - to develop contemporary and comprehensive Relationships and Sex Education programmes for d/Deaf learners. The funding enabled the charity to provide free relationships and sex education programmes for deaf learners, and develop a training programme pilot for teachers of the d/Deaf.
## **School of Social Entrepreneurship - Grant Instalment 1-3 - unrestricted - (£4,250)**
The grant supported the CEO in attending a learning programme with the School for Social Entrepreneurs to build on the organisation’s business strategy. The funding was used towards staff salaries.
## **Donations**
The receipt of ad hoc donations from members of the public and organisations is used for resources and materials needed for our sessions delivered in schools.
To ensure our work is accessible to all, including young people, parents and teachers we published a book in September 2021 titled “Sex Ed: an inclusive teenage guide to sex and relationships”. Following the publication of this book, we launched a crowdfunder in May 2022 to raise funds for a copy of our book to be donated to school libraries. So far we have raised a total of £505.
Other fundraising activities, such as fundraising events have raised £51 for the charity's work in schools.
In total, from donations, we have received £626.12.
## **Investment Policy**
The Management Committee has decided not to make any investments; this position will be reconsidered when our Reserves Policy has been met.
## **Reserves Policy**
The Management Committee has examined the charity’s requirements for reserves in light of the main risks to the organisation. It has established a policy where in future, 5% of unrestricted grants and donations received will be secured for the Charity’s reserves.

The Management Committee has examined the charity’s requirements for reserves in light of the main risks to the organisation. It has established a policy whereby the unrestricted funds not committed or invested in tangible fixed assets held by the charity should be between 3 and 6 months of the expenditure.
Budgeted expenditure for the accounting period ending 31 July 2024 is £144K and therefore the **target** is £36K to £72K in general funds. The reserves are needed to meet the working capital requirements of the charity and the Management Committee are confident that at this level they would be able to continue the current activities of the charity in the event of a significant drop in funding. The present level of reserves available to the charity is £12.63K. Although the strategy is to continue to build reserves through planned operating surpluses, the Management Committee is well aware that it is unlikely that the target range can be reached for at least 5 years. In the short term the Management Committee has also considered the extent to which existing activities and expenditure could be curtailed, should such circumstances arise.
Any surplus from the current financial year was allocated to offset the deficits of the preceding financial year.
## **Plans for Future Periods**
School of Sexuality Education will continue to make sure that all young people receive highquality, evidence-led programmes with exceptional delivery and detailed evaluation. Our priority is to create a sustainable and resilient organisation, with processes and policy that reflect our journey from a start-up to an established charity and a leader in the sector. Other priorities are
- Building the Charity’s reserves and ensuring financial stability, by continuing with a freelance model and diversifying income streams.
- Sourcing funding that will allow us to sustainably reach a higher number of schools in regions around the UK with low-income households.
- Continuing to provide expert consultancy and work towards sharing best practice in the sector.
## **Recruitment and Appointment of Management Committee**
Recruitment and training of Trustees
The recruitment of Trustees is carried out primarily through external recruitment, nominations from within the current Board and wider recommendation from other stakeholders, including schools and funders. A skills audit is conducted every three months by the Board and CEO

to assess the need for recruitment. Appointments are made by a vote of the existing members.

The Directors of the company are also charity trustees for the purposes of charity law and under the company’s Articles are known as members of the Management Committee.
All members of the Management Committee give their time voluntarily and receive no benefits from the charity. No expenses were claimed from the charity by The Trustees. The Trustees give their time voluntarily.
In the year ending 31 July 2024 the work of School of Sexuality Education was carried out by 20 freelance staff and 2 contracted staff members.
## **Risk Management**
The Trustees of School of Sexuality Education are responsible for the management of the risks faced by the charity. Detailed consideration of risk is delegated to the CEO. Risks are identified annually and are monitored and controlled on an ongoing basis. The Trustees are satisfied that all major risks have been reviewed and procedures put in place to mitigate against those risks.
Whilst procedures can mitigate against major risks, the Trustees cannot provide absolute assurance against those risks. The Trustees recognise the importance of reviewing the risks associated within the charity and will review major risks on a regular basis, including: the Cost of Living crisis and the impact of inflation, shifts in government policy, negative media representations, and the continued Anti-Trans movement in the UK.
## **Related Parties**
At a national level, RSE is steered by our partners, the Sex Education Forum who bring together experts and collaborators in the sector.
To continue providing evidence-based and relevant relationships sex education, we aim to continue working with our research partners at universities across the UK.

## **Responsibilities of the Management Committee**
Company law requires the Management Committee to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of the affairs of the charitable company as at the balance sheet date and of its incoming resources and application of resources, including income and expenditure, for the financial year. In preparing those financial statements, the management committee should follow best practice and:
- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; and
- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is not appropriate to assume that the company will continue on that basis.
The Management Committee is responsible for maintaining proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 1985. The Management Committee is also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charitable company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
## **Members of the Management Committee**
In accordance with company law, as the company’s directors, we certify that:
- so far as we are aware, there is no relevant financial information of which the company’s independent reviewers are unaware; and
- as directors of the company we have taken all the steps that we ought to have taken in order to make ourselves aware of any relevant financial information and to establish that the charity’s independent reviewers are aware of that information.

## **Independent Review**
Charles Osei was appointed as the charitable company’s independent reviewers during the year and have expressed their willingness to continue in that capacity.
This report has been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities (issued in March 2005) and in accordance with the special provisions of Part VII of the Companies Act 1985 relating to small entities.

## **1. Net Incoming Resources for the Year**
The charity operates a defined contribution pension scheme for its employees, and contributed £849 this year.
## **2. Trustee Remuneration & Related Party Transactions**
No members of the management committee received any remuneration during the year. No members of the management committee incurred travel costs during the year. No trustee or other person related to the charity had any personal interest in any contract or transaction entered into by the charity during the year.
## **3. Taxation**
As a charity, School of Sexuality Education is exempt from tax on income and gains falling within section 505 of the Taxes Act 1988 or s256 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 to the extent that these are applied to its charitable objects. No tax charges have arisen in the Charity.

I report on the financial statements for the year ended 31 July 2024 set out on pages 18 - 27.
This report is made solely to the Trustees of School Sexuality Education, as a body, in accordance with regulations made under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 and Charity SORP. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the Trustees matters I am required to state to them in an Independent Examiner's report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the Charity and Charity's trustees for my independent examination work, for this report, or for the statement I have given below.
## **Respective responsibilities of Trustees and independent examiner**
As charity trustees, for the purposes of charity law, are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements, the Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
Having satisfied myself that the Charity is not subject to an audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:
- a) examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
- b) follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
- c) state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner's statement**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity, and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the reports limited to those matters set out in the statement on the next page.

## **Basis of Preparation.**
These accounts have been prepared on an accrual basis and include income and expenditure as they are earned or incurred, rather than as cash received or paid. Reference to the "Charities SORP" refers to the Charites SORP (FRS 102): Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland. 2nd edition effective 1 January 2019, and in accordance with the Companies Act 2006.
## **1a. Income**
All income is recognised once the Charity has entitlement to the income, it is probable that the income will be received, and the amount of income receivable can be measured reliably.
Grants are included in the Statement of financial activities on a receivable basis. The balance of income received for specific purposes but not explended during the period is shown in the relevant funds on the Balance Sheet. Where income is received in advance of entitlement of receipt, its recognition is deferred and included in creditors as deferred income. Where entitlement occurs before income is received, the income is accrued.
Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation.
Income tax recoverable in relation to investment income is recognised at the time the investment income is receivable.
## **1b. Expenditure**
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is possible that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.
Expenditure on charitable activities is incurred on directly undertaking the activities which further the Charity's objectives, as well as any associated support costs.
All expenditure is inclusive of irrecoverable VAT.
## **1c. Voluntary Income**
All voluntary income and donations are recognised and included in the accounts as they are received.
## **1d. Fund accounting**
Unrestricted Funds are receivable or generated for the objects of the charity without further specified purpose and are available as general funds.
Restricted Funds are subjected to restrictions on their expenditure imposed by the donor. Designated Funds are unrestricted funds but earmarked by the trustees for particular purposes.

## **1e. Taxation**
The Charity is considered to pass the tests set out in Paragraph 1 Schedule 6 of the Finance Act 2010 and therefore it meets the definition of a charitable company for UK corporation tax purposes. Accordingly, the Charity is potentially exempt from taxation in respect of income or capital gains received within categories covered by Chapter 3 Part 11 of the Corporation Tax Act 2010 or Section 256 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992, to the extent that such income or gains are applied exclusively to charitable purposes.
## **1f. Debtors**
Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount. Prepayments are valued at amount prepaid.
## **1g. Cash at bank and in hand**
Cash at bank and in hand includes cash and short-term highly liquid investments with a short maturity of three months or less from the date of acquisition or opening of the deposit or similar account.
## **1h. Liabilities and provisions**
Liabilities are recognised when there is an obligation at the balance sheet date as a result of a past event, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefit will be required in settlement, and the amount of the settlement can be estimated reliably.
Liabilities are recognised at the amount that the Charity anticipates it will pay to settle the debt or the amount it has received as advanced payments for the goods or services it must provide.
Provisions are measured at the best estimate of the amounts required to settle the obligation. Where the effect of the time value of money is material, the provision is based on the present value of those amounts, discounted at the pre-tax discount rate that reflects the risks specific to the liability. The unwinding of the discount is recognised in the Statement of financial activities as a finance cost.
## **1i. Financial Instruments**
The Charity only has financial assets and financial liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value with the exception of bank loans which are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.
## **1j. Critical accounting estimates and areas of judgement**
Estimates and judgements are continually evaluated and are based on historical experience and other factors, including expectations of future events that are believed to be reasonable under the circumstances. The Charity does not currently have any significant accounting estimates or areas of judgement.
## **1k. Pension Cost and Other Post-Retirement Benefits**
The charitable company operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the charitable company's pensions scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.
