The review looks at what we achieved and the outcomes of our work in the
previous 12 months.

The review also helps us ensure our aim. objectives and activities remain

The focus of our w¢)rk
Our main objectives for the year continued to be providing inclusive and
comprehensive relationship5 and sex education fcf young people ond those Ihat
work wilh them. The strategies we used to meet Ihese objectives incbded:

Providing high quafity relationships and sex education programmes to
education institutions and speciafLSt centres.
Ddivering speclar￿t consvllancy and staff continuous professional
development training sessions.
Collaborating V￿th world4eading academics to contribute to research oround
relationships and sex education.
Worting in portnership wth other organwtions on best practice and Innovallon
in relationships and sex education.

of their WC￿ with young people.

Who used and beneftted from our servl¢es7
School of Sexuafity Educatlon provldes comprehensive and incbjsive relationships and
sex education IRSEI programmes. Our approach is LGBTQIA+ incluslve, evidenc
based and age appropriate. Our leom of unembcxrassable faciltators pride
themselv8s in crealing non-iudgmentol and safe spaces for young people to leam
about ther ov4n health and wellbeing.
Our programmes cover the following seven key themes:

Our programmes are defivered as talk5 and wthshops to young people through
schools. colleges, universities. speciafist centres, ond youth groups. We also provide
staff training and consultancy on relationships and sex education.
We completed visits to over 4CQ institutions Ischocls. colleges, universities. youth
groups as well as other charities) Fxedominanlly in England, as well in Scotland and

Wales. We worked with young people predominanty in secondary schools. students,
aged 11-18 yea[5 old. as wel as sorne primary schoc4s. youth groups. and universities.

In 2022-2023. we reached more region5 and maintained our wotk in previously
engaged region5. We saw a reduction in our work in Scolland due to 5toff capacity.

relationships and sex educ(rtion.

The number of schools we work wlh is limited to our intemal capacity and the number
of foclitators available to defiver yogrammes. Demand for our services És met on a
first come, first served basis. partrculaty to state secondary schools. however. we find
that we are atrAe to accommodate most schools at some point during the academic
year.
We continue to offer a liered pricing mo(Jel fcK schoc45, based on their budget and
capacity for our progrommes. The income directy funds facilitators delivering the
WO￿ and chority's activities. Independent schools are glven higher tiers to subsidise
costs for Iow4ncome or state institutions. This approoch ensures that OLf w￿k is
accesslbie to am.
We collect feedback at the end of ow wortshops, where students can provlde
feedback vla an ortine survey on the session5 Ihey received that day. Finally, there
are free-text boxes in which sludents can tell us what ttiey liked or dlsllked about the
workshopls). and one thing they w￿1 do differenlty as a result of the workshoplsl.

continue supporting young people. We have delivered stoff training at o range of
organisations from secondary schools, youth centres and colleges.

content run-throughs to encourage transparency, and a joined up approach to
relationships and sex education be￿een school and home.
Consullancy
Another element of School of 5exuafty Education's work invcAves consultancy, which
we offer to educational institutiors. on resecTch projeds, or partner organisations.

In 202(>2022 we worked wilh worfckleading research￿5 at UCL. Anglia Rusknn University
ond University of Leicester to research teen's current experiences of sexual violence
both online and offllne. From this reseorch. we ccpdesigned o sulte of resources
around the importance of troum(Finformed practice. advice fcf parent5 and carers
if Iheir chli d experiences online ho￿n5 ond sexual violence prevention checklist for
senior leaders.
Fundlng
Th8 gront from Ovingdean Holl Foundation, (provided in three in5talmentsl. funded
our ploneerfng project for a second year
to develop contemporary and
comprehensive Relalionships and Sex Education programmes for d/Deaf leamers. The
funding enabled a qualified BSL - Engffsh interpreter and dlDeaf studies graduate to
contlnue leading on this proSect and provide free rdotionshK)s and sex educalion
programmes for dlDeof leomers. Key outcomes from this year of ttie project were:
A brand new new vldeo res0￿Ce to wpport our programmes and workshop
facli itation.
Developed new drafts of the programmes following feedback. The
development of "minl modules" allowed an improved pace for dlDeaf
leamers and a realisttc leaclNng programme that better met Ihe needs of
dlDeaf pupils.
Feedback continue to be posltive from staff and students:
"I liked how well it was paced, it went al o very comfortable speed with room to stop
and discuss when issues arose. There were plenty of opportunities for group discussions
and to address any question5 orconcems that students raised. Content was very visual
with the ernphaS￿ on discussion rather Ihan reading. allowing better access for

The third instalment of the gant funding enobled a quafified BSL - English interpreter
and dlDeaf studies to continue leoding on a project thal involved developing
bespoke resources ond free relalionships and sex education progammes for deaf
leamers.
School of Soclal Entreprenewshlp - Ilnol (urnestrlcted) grant Instaknenl (£lOOO)
The grant SUp￿Tred the CEO in attending the SSE Lec¥ning Programme and
implementing that lecrning for the organtsation'5 business devek)pment strategy. The
fijnding was V5ed towards staff 501(yies.

Donallons
The receipt of od hoc donations from members of the pubffic and organisations is used
for resources and materials needed our sessions delvered in schoob.
To ensure our work is accessible to al. inclvrfing young peoF4e, parents and teachers
we published o book in September 2021 titled "Sex Ed: an indvsive teenage guide to
sex and relationship5"
We launched a crowdfunder in May 2022 to raise funds for a copy of our book lo be
donated to school libraries. En$￿ing our work and high qvality relatDnshlps and sex
education 15 acce55ible to all. Totd raised for the peri(>J £356.
Inveslment Pollcy
The Management Committee has decided not to make any investments", this positlon
11 be reconsldered when our Reserves Poficy has been met.
Reserves Pollcy
The Managemenl Commlttee has examined the charity's requirements for reserv8s In
Ilght of the maln rlsks to the organisation. It has established a pollcy where in future.
5% of unrestricted grants and donation5 received wll be secured for the Chority's
reserves.
Plans for Future Perfods
School of Sexuality Education plans on continuing the activities ouffined above in the
forthcoming years. Other ￿loritieS are
Building the Charity's reserves and ensuring finoncial stabli ty. by continuing
with a freelance model and dtversifying income streams.
Sourcing funding ttiat wll allow us to raach a higher number of schools in
particular regions V*ith low-income households.
Continuing to provide exwt consultoncy and work towords sharing best
practice in the sector.
Recrullment and Appolnlm•nt of Managemenl Commlltee
The directcrfs of the company ￿e aEso charity trustees for the Pu￿>0SeS of charity law
and Under the company's Article5 are known as membeT5 of the Management
Committee.
All member5 of the Management Committee give ther time voluntC￿ly and receive
no benefits from Ihe charity. No expenses were daimed from the charity by The
Tnjstees. Trie Trustee5 grve their time vobnlarity.

By 31 July 2023 the work of Schocl of Sexuofity Education was c￿led out by Iwo
contract staff and 15 freelance staff.
Rlsk Management
The TTuslees of School of Sexuality Education ore responsible for the monagemenl of
the risks faced by the charity. Detoli ed consideration of risk is delegoted to the CEO.
Risks are idenlified onnuaNy and are monitored and controlled on an ongoing basis.
The Trustees are satisfied that all major rtsks have been reviewed and procedures put
In place to mitigate against those ti5ks.
Whllst procedures can mi1Sgate against rna￿ rlsks. the Trustees cannot provide
absolute assurance ogoinst those risks. The Trustees recognise the importance ol
reviewing the risks a550ciated wthin the charity and V*ill review major risks on o regular
bas15. Includlng: the adverse politicol clmate, the ongoing impact of Covid-19. the
Cost of Living crisis and the impact of inflation. loss of key stoff. shifts in government
pollcy, health and safety, negative press attention and the growth of the Anti-Trans
rnovement in the UK.
The Management Commlttee sought to Teview the buslness modes. In Ilght of the
Increasing cost of sales ond operalions incurred due to Ihe adverse political climate
ond the impact on the charity's work. specifically the number of school engagements
dropping. On review and recommendations from a strategy adviser, the
Management Committee decided to move staff from the salaried model. rehJning
to a fredance model for faclitators.
The Management Committee is confidenl that the contracts secured will reduce any
debt within the nexl ocadernic year ond b8gin bulding the Charity's reserves,
porticularfy wlh the adjusted business model. As well as Ihe adjusted business model,
the Charity will continue to diveT5ify the income streams through fundlrKJ. donations
ond contracts.
Although the strotegy is to continue lo build reserves Ihrough planned operating
surpluses. Ihe Management Committee is well aware Ihat itls unlikely that the target
range can be reached for at least hvo years. In the Sh1￿ tem the Management
Committee has also considered the exlent to vthich existing activities and expenditure
could b8 Curtailed. should such circumstances arise.

The reC￿ltment of Trustees is carried out primarly through extemal recruttment.
nominations from within tt)e current Board and wder recommendation from other
stakeholder5. including schoo15 and funders. In order to assess their personal
competence and independence. a thlls audit ts conducted to measure their
suitability for any vacancies on the Board. Appointrnents are mode by a vote of Ihe
existing membe[5.
