## **- Catalyst Foundation SHE Programs update 2020 to 2022**
There are 40 girls on the Catalyst Foundation - SHE program. The girls are spread across 10 schools in 2 districts, whereas 15 girls are supported in 6 schools across Beatrice and 25 girls are supported in 4 schools across Tsholotsho. The program supports all in various ways as will be mentioned below.
## **Tuition**
## **1. Fees Payments**
Payment of full school fees is part of our core mandate. We have been paying fees for all beneficiaries every term since inception. Full fees are paid in the first week of schools opening. There are 3 terms a year and the fees for all 40 girls are paid in full every term.
## **2. Uniforms**
In January all the 40 Catalyst Foundation SHE girls in Beatrice (15) and Tsholotsho (25) received two sets of complete new uniforms that include uniform dresses, socks and hats as well as school shoes for summer. In April we secured winter wear for the 15 Beatrice Catalyst Foundation girls. This comprised of school tracksuits, winter jerseys and slacks for the two form one girls. In Tsholotsho the girls have received their uniforms once every year for the past 2 years.
## **3. School Stationery**
We have handed all our 40 beneficiaries’ stationery every opening of all 3 school terms. The girls receive stationery in the form of pens, cello tape, writing books, plastic and khaki covers as well as pencils.
## **4. School Accessories**
At the beginning of each year all the Catalyst Foundation SHE beneficiaries have received satchels to carry their books, this has been the case for the past 2 years. This year however the Beatrice girls received satchels twice this year once in January then in September.
## **5. Extra lessons**
After undertaking the progress assessments, we noted a gap in the girls’ performance and considering that teachers had taken industrial action. We initiated extra tutoring for the girls with teachers across the 10 SHE schools. All the costs for the extra lessons are taken care of by Catalyst Foundation on a monthly basis.
## **6. Exam Fees**
Payments were done for our beneficiaries in grade 7 for their examination fees. This has been the case for the past 2 years. This year we also paid for another pupil not on the Catalyst Foundation program who had failed to raise the required exam fees.
## **Basic Care Support**
## **1. Food Hampers**
Every academic term we have distributed food hampers and non-food items to all 40 beneficiaries to not only benefit the girls but their immediate families or caregivers. The girls therefore receive 3 food hampers in a year. Goods distributed to each beneficiary include the following items:
- 5l cooking oil
- 4 kgs soya chunks
- 6kgs sugar beans
- 5 kgs flour
- 6kgs sugar
- 2kgs salt
- 2 tubes of Colgate
- 2 vaseline bottles
- 2 bars of soap
- 3 bottles of peanut butter
- 5 kgs mahewu powder
- Shoe polish
- Roll on and deodorant
## **2. Home Clothing**
Over and above school winter tracksuits, all the 15 beneficiaries in Beatrice received one complete tracksuit to wear at home and undergarments this year. This was to ensure they were warm and had something extra to wear that was not school uniform when they got home.
## **3. Blankets**
Each of the 40 girls received a blanket to help with the cold winter weather.
## **4. Bicycle donations to the Catalyst Foundation SHE beneficiaries**
A fundraising campaign was launched where we managed to purchase a total 15 bicycles for our learners which were distributed across both Beatrice and Tsholotsho. Of the 15 bicycles, 3 were allocated to 3 Beatrice beneficiaries and 12 to Tsholotsho beneficiaries. The learners travel more than 5 kms daily to school and would arrive late to school hence the purchasing of the bikes. The bicycles have greatly assisted the learners.
## **Health**
## **1. Health checks**
Health checks for Catalyst Foundation beneficiaries are conducted twice a year for all 40 beneficiaries to assess the health and wellbeing of the girls.
Some of the tests done include:
- Weight checks
- Blood pressure checks
- Oxygen saturation and pulse checks
- Lung function checks
- ECG and Rapid blood tests
- Urine analysis
- Home and Socio-economic Assessments
- Hearing tests
- Eye tests
Anomalies noted in the cases are referred for further treatment with specialist doctors.
## **2. Malnutrition cases**
On the first health checks that we conducted under the SHE program, over 80% of the girls were discovered to be malnourished. Thereafter, as part of addressing the situation we began buying food hampers for the girls. Since introducing these food hampers the malnutrition cases have since improved significantly.
## **3. Hearing Impairment cases**
Two cases of Hearing Impairment were also discovered amongst the girls In Tsholotsho and were referred to an ENT specialist who prescribed hearing aids all paid for by Catalyst Foundation.
## **4.**
## **Medical treatment**
One of the Catalyst Foundation beneficiaries in Beatrice was complaining of persistent stomach pains and was taken to hospital for tests, thereafter, diagnosed with acute stomach ulcers. Catalyst Foundation paid for the treatment and medication as well as Doctors review two weeks after treatment and buying the prescribed dietary items.
## **5. Psychosocial Support intervention**
One among the beneficiaries in Beatrice was a victim of emotional and physical abuse from the stepfather. As Catalyst Foundation, we took her mother, stepsister and herself for counselling at Friendly Bench counselling services and, facilitated for the mother to receive counselling at Musasa Projects, a platform for Gender based violence victims. We paid for all their travel expenses from Beatrice to Harare and back home on all occasions.
## **Additional Support**
## **1. Sporting equipment donation**
Catalyst Foundation facilitated for playing of netball sport through Bibs and balls donated by the CEO at Ringa, Gombo, Manyoshwa and Chihoro Primary Schools in Beatrice and Skente Primary School in Tsholotsho. Each of these schools received a complete set of netball uniforms and netballs. The organisation also donated Chess boards to support the development of the sport at Chihoro and Muda Primary Schools.
## **2. School Signage Posts**
Signage posts for Glovina Gombo, Muda and Manyoshwa Primary schools in Beatrice were designed and erected with each school receiving two signage posts.
## **3.**
## **Grass cutting in schools**
Catalyst Foundation donated Diesel totalling 60l as well as tractor hire to Manyoshwa, Ringa and Chihoro Primary schools in Beatrice for cutting tall grass around the school. This was done for the safety of the learners as the grounds were potential habitats for snakes and mosquitoes.
## **4. ICT Support**
Two (2) laptops were secured for Ringa and Chihoro Primary Schools in Beatrice.
## **5. Assistance of A Caregiver at Gombo**
During a visit to one of the caregivers’ home in Beatrice, it was discovered that there was a water crisis issue. Catalyst Foundation subsequently paid for deepening of the Water well so that the household could get water for consumption and watering their garden plants.
## **6. Building fund contribution at Ringa Primary**
Catalyst Foundation contributed towards the payment of classroom block building fund fees for 3 of our beneficiaries at Ringa Primary in Beatrice.
## **7. Psychological Evaluations at Ringa Primary school**
A three-man team was dispatched to visit Seke District to conduct assessments on learners with special learning needs. Through a request by Catalyst Foundation, the District School Inspector facilitated for the services of learner welfare and psychological services department to do psychological evaluations. The aim was to assess and place learners with learning difficulties in an appropriate special needs provision. Consequently, this was to initiate the establishment of a special needs provision at Ringa Primary School. One of our beneficiaries was among the learners assessed for possible learning disability.
A total number of 20 pupils were assessed and the cost was covered by Catalyst Foundation. The cost included fuel to carry the Psychologists, their allowances and accommodation. A special class for pupils with special needs has since been established at the school
## **8. Relocating some of the beneficiaries closer to school**
Having identified some of our beneficiaries that stay far from school, Catalyst Foundation facilitated for them to stay on the school premises under the care of an assigned teacher at the school. This was done for our two grade 7 learners and one grade 6 pupil so they could focus on their studies without the disturbances that had been noted in their home setup. The teachers received groceries for the upkeep of the girls as well as monetary gratuity for assisting.
## **Organised Events**
## **1. Day of The African Child Commemoration Event**
Catalyst foundation in collaboration with the Beatrice council and Ministry of Youth hosted a successful event to mark the Day of the African child. The event was hosted at Chihoro Primary, and 9 schools were in attendance. The schools that participated are Chihoro Primary, Charter, Glovina Gombo Primary, Muda Primary and High schools, Manyochwa Primary, among others.
Activities that took place were for and by the children. The children performed poems, dramas, dance, and speeches. Catalyst Foundation sponsored the food and drinks for over 400 learners present as well as fuel for the bus to carry participants. The aim of this event was to raise awareness on child protection.
## **2. August CAMP VICTORY**
We hosted the first ever SHE boot camp called “SHE – Camp Victory Girls Boot Camp” running under the theme RAISING CHAMPIONS at Catalyst Boran Farm. We hoped to achieve this by Educating, Encouraging, and Empowering the girls through mentorship, teamwork, creativity, and innovative activities highlighting the possibilities and options available to them. In total there were 20 girls that took part in this camp from the 6 Beatrice schools.
There were lots of activities that the girls undertook. These included sporting, art and crafts, crocheting, talent shows, debates, guidance and counselling, hygiene lessons, grooming and etiquette, and a trip to the airport and Margolis resort among other activities.
## **3. International Day of the Girl Child Commemorations**
This year we celebrated the Girl child by hosting commemorations at Ringa Primary, Sikente and Nemane High. All the 40 SHE girls took part and all participants received gift hampers that included soap, pads, stationery and undergarments. An additional 60 girls who participated in the commemorations and not on the SHE program received theses gift packs as well.
## **Awareness Programs**
## **1. Child Safeguarding workshop at CATALYST BORAN FARM**
In July we had a training workshop for Catalyst Boran staff on Child Safeguarding. The purpose of the meeting was to conscientise the staff on code of conduct that applies to children under the age of 18 as they live as a community to ensure children are protected. A clear code of conduct was communicated to all attendees.
In attendance was the Local Police Victim Friendly unit who deal with matters of child law and abuse who unpacked the various forms of child abuse and neglect and what the laws of Zimbabwe entails on the matter.
## **2. Career guidance and educational trips to Harare**
We took two of our older girls in High school on the program to Harare International Airport as part of giving them exposure outside Beatrice. As part of the trip they had career guidance at a local Hospital for the girl that aspires to be a nurse and for the other girl who wants to be a lawyer, Catalyst Foundation facilitated a meeting for her with a young female lawyer practising in Harare.
## **Projects**
## **1. Poultry Income generating project**
Through an initiative by the CEO Catalyst Foundation began a Poultry rearing project at the Catalyst Boran farm. Over the past 3 months 250 chickens were reared and sold and the proceeds were ploughed back into the project, and we have a current batch of 300 birds.
## **Ongoing Programs**
## **1. Talent Shows**
Catalyst Foundation has organised Talent shows in the 10 schools this year. In these events all the pupils showcase the different talents they possess. These include dancing, poems, speeches and modelling. This is to foster confidence among the pupils and spark an interest in performing arts.
## **2. Progress Assessments**
We undertook school performance assessments for our 40 learners across the 10 schools in Tsholotsho and Beatrice. The aim was to assess how the girls are performing in class academically so we can benchmark how the program is impacting them as part of our monitoring and evaluation of the program. These assessments are done twice each term.
## **Appreciation**
## **1. Coordinators gratuity**
In the schools that SHE program operates we identified a teacher to act as our coordinator who is the immediate contact with the girls and to help run some of the SHE activities in the school. We therefore give them a monthly allowance to cover airtime costs as we constantly in touch with them to assist in running the program. This gratuity extends to a total of 10 teachers and their headmasters in the 10 SHE schools. The gratuity is also extended to our community of volunteers who go in the field with the Catalyst Foundation staff.

Corporate and individual donations are sought in order for the charity to meet its aims. The charity also organises fundraising activities to boost the total donations.
## **Review of progress and achievements and finances**
In the period to date, the first reporting period, the Trustees have made significant effort to promote the charity in order to gain as many donations as possible to aid the objectives of providing school aged females in Southern Africa with education and required items to assist with that.
At our first-year end, we have been able to assist over 10 school girls with their education in Zimbabwe and we are now in a position to push this in to other Southern African countries.

I report on the accounts of Catalyst Foundation for the year ended 31 March 2022, which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities and Balance Sheet and the related notes.
This report is made solely to the Charity’s Trustees, as a body, in accordance with s.43(3) of the Charities Act 1993. My examination has been undertaken so that I might state to the Charity’s Trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an independent examiner’s report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the Charity and the Charity’s Trustees as a body, for my examination, for this report, or for the opinions I have formed.
## **Respective responsibilities of members of the Trustees and the examiner**
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider an audit is not required for this year under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts (under section 43(3)(a) of the 1993 Act);
- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners (under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act); and
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes a consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

- In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and

## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes a consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

- In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the requirements of the 1993 Act have not been met; or
- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
