## **York Down Syndrome Support Group** ## **Charity Registration No: 1193370 Trustees** ## **Annual Report** For the year ended 31 December 2023 The trustees present their report along with consolidated financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2023. ## **The Objective of YDSSG** We are a parent led support group based in York in the UK. Ou r overall aim is to create and develop the conditions which will enable our children with Down Syndrome to attain their full potential. We aim to support all those involved in the lives of our children including family members and professionals in York and the surrounding area. ## **What we aim to do:** - offer personal support to new parents or parents with an antenatal diagnosis in whatever form they prefer - host regular social events where children can come together to chat, play and learn new skills - provide information and signpost resources that might be helpful to those with Down Syndrome in York and all who support them personally or professionally - host regular social events for the whole family - lend useful resources to families and professionals - provide training for parents and professionals - provide speech and language support - promote the awareness of Down Syndrome and encourage the inclusion of all within society - support high quality research about any aspect of living with Down Syndrome The trustees always ensure that the activities we undertake are in line with our charitable objects and aims. ## **Affiliations to National charities** Our group is affiliated to two national Charities: - The Down’s Syndrome Association (Registered Charity no 1061474) - Phab (Registered Charity no 283931) Both charities support the group’s activities both behind the scenes and relating to activities and training. They provide us with access to services such as group insurance, DBS checks, funding advice, specialist training and adventure/holiday opportunities for members. ## **How we work** The Charity delivers its charitable aims with four focus areas: - Education - Social and Sports - • Fundraising - Communication Funds raised support educational and information provision, resources and subsidise social events. Monthly committee meetings include reviews and ongoing activity planning. ## **Education** **Chatterbox** is our Speech and Language programme. Sessions are planned and delivered by a professional speech and language therapist. The weeks when they are not meeting up, our professional Speech and Language Therapist visits children individually in their education setting to review their progress and set new targets for the children to work towards. During 2023 Chatterbox educational sessions continued to be delivered in this way until the end of the 2023 summer term at Poppleton Ousebank School. Our long-established Speech and therapist (SaLT), Kath Pringle, retired role in July 2023. We are very grateful to that she has contributed to our group plus years. Her input and support to our Chatterbox families has been huge and We are delighted that Gwendolina agreed to take over as our specialist one of the country’s leading specialists speech, language, and communication those with Down Syndrome, and works national Down’s Syndrome Association specialist advisor. We feel extremely language from her Kath for all over seven group and valuable. Toner has SaLT. She is in the needs of with the as their lucky to have her working with us. Unfortunately, Gwendolina was unable to start Chatterbox straight after Kath’s retirement however plans are well underway to resume sessions in early 2024, hosted by The Steiner School in Fulford. **Educational training** During the academic year 22-23, YDSSG’s training team (Laura Swales and Jo Bryenton) delivered and co-ordinated six online free training sessions for education professionals - and parents where it was appropriate covering topics as diverse as Colourful Semantics and Maths for Life. Feedback from participants was again positive but the numbers of participants attending was mixed. Schools struggled to release staff during the teaching day. As a result of the attendance issues experienced in 22-23, during the subsequent academic year (23-24) instead of offering a fixed programme of training sessions for parents and professionals, we have offered bespoke sessions in individual settings. We have covered the learning profile of a child with Down Syndrome (DS) and how to teach and support a child with DS. We have also been able to tailor the sessions around the specific needs of the individual child and deliver sessions on a day/time to suit the school. The only fixed session that we have delivered is the 'Introduction to Supporting Children with Down Syndrome' (delivered on Thursday 19th October). We will offer this session again at the end of the Summer Term. We continue to support professionals and parents where possible by responding to emails and sharing relevant resources and courses. We also host a dedicated closed Facebook group which is open to any professional supporting the families in our locality. **Health training** Members of the group participated in sessions training health care workers and midwives in the Dept of Health Studies at the University of York. This input, describing our lived experience was well received. ## **Social and sporting activities** ## **Regular events** ## **DS Yorkies Football team.** The team have regular Monday evening football sessions at Burnholme sports centre during term time. The group includes children and young people aged approximately 9 and above. Siblings also attend and are an important part of the group. In February the group arranged a meet up for a game with the football team from the Leeds Down Syndrome Group “Sunshine and Smiles” In July our coaches Daz and Dave retired. We’re very grateful for all the work they did with the group. We’re also very grateful that parents (Richard Ebdon and Chris Murdoch) have been able cover the coaching roles whilst we recruit new coaches for the team. We have identified new potential coaches and anticipate that they will be starting to volunteer with the group in the early months of 2024. Grateful thanks also go to Rachael Harrison who has continued to co-ordinate the group. We are hoping to start a football group for younger children in 2024. ## **Sing and Sign Maestros** A weekly sing and sign group for young people aged 11 plus has been developed as a regular group activity by members of YDSSG. “Sing and Sign Maestros” (S&SM) is now established as a separately constituted group but remains very closely affiliated to YDSSG. It is open to all aged 11 and above (with and without additional needs). During the year S&SM were extremely sad to lose their inspirational choir leader, Rachael Whittaker who sadly passed away in May 2023. Rachael was central to the establishment of the group and is sorely missed. S&SM has continued to thrive with the leadership of Jo Bryenton who also provides all Makaton support, alongside Rachael’s husband Ben, who has become the musical director of the choir. Their close collaboration Stamford Bridge Community Choir continues, joining with its members for concerts and social events. ## **History and Archaeology Club** This club started as a pilot in October 2023, because of the request of one of our post 16 members who was keen to develop his knowledge in this area. Facilitated by community archaeologist Dr Jon Kenny, the group meets once a month at the home of one of the members. Their initial topic has been about the prehistoric age and their activity has included drawing and imagining how life might have been in those times. The club hosted a display about their activity for York Disability Week alongside our group’s cake stall at the Spurriergate Centre in November. ## **Other social activities** ## **World Down Syndrome Day celebration with Singtasia** The group celebrated World Downs Syndrome Day with a big sing along Party featuring Singtasia, who led the activity dressed as characters from favourite Disney films. We hosted two sessions split up by a refreshment break. Younger (early years and primary aged) children attended the earlier party and secondary aged and older young people attended the second session. We had extremely positive feedback and everyone had a great time. ## **York Maize Maze trip** Our Annual Trip to York’s Maize Maze, this time in July, again proved popular and was enjoyed by all ## **Swimming at the open-air pool in Helmsley** The group hired the open-air swimming pool at Helmsley for a group session during August. This attracted some members who hadn’t regularly attended group activities in the past. All had a great time. ## **York Model Engineers trip for families** Another annual event was the trip to the York Model Engineers’ club. All who attend very much enjoyed the club’s hospitality and riding on different model trains. Many thanks to the club for being such generous hosts and showing our group such kindness over many years. ## **Christmas Tree festival** This year our group with the Sing and Sign Maestros joined together to decorate a tree for the York Minster Christmas Tree festival. We held two workshops to make decorations during the months leading up to the festival inspired by ideas from Sue Clayton who is community artist. The tree was on display throughout December, and we were delighted to be voted as the winner of the best Charity Tree in the public vote. ## **Inclusive Minster Carol Concert** Our group was also delighted to participate in the first inclusive carol service at York Minster. Joining with the Sing and Sign Maestros and Stamford Bridge Community Choir, we focused on the theme of “Community” and sung and signed the song “We All Stand Together” (originally made famous by Paul McCartney and a chorus of cartoon frogs). ## **Fundraising** ## **Ultra Trek around the Isle of Wight** We were delighted and extremely grateful that one of our parents took on a massive, sponsored event. Dani Trulock did an Ultra-trek of 106km walking all the way around the Isle of Wight in 29 hours and 9 minutes in April. Her massive effort raised just under £2000 for the group. This was a hugely important individual fundraising contribution to the group during a year in which funds were scarce. ## **Cake and craft stalls** The group hosted cake stalls at the Spurriergate centre as well as a craft stall at Archbishop Holgates school Christmas Fair. The opportunity to have coffee with cake purchases also encouraged a very sociable morning. Important alongside income from the stalls is the awareness raising that we can encourage. ## **Grant funding applications** Our group consulted with local grant writing organisation “Beware of the Bull” during the year and were grateful to receive advice from them about grant funding strategies. During the latter part of the year, we developed a more strategic approach to grant applications and the group was awarded grant funding totally £3960 from 4 funders. We were unsuccessful with regards to the National Lottery Awards for all application to support the Chatterbox project. ## **Communication** ## _**New Parents**_ We continue to welcome new families to the group, both those moving into the area and those who were resident in the city at time of birth. York Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have a regular supply of new-parent information packs on their ante-natal, maternity and children’s wards in both York and Scarborough. ## **Information gathering and dissemination** A key part of the group’s activities is sharing information that might be relevant to our families about national policy developments, local consultations and activities that are organised by other voluntary groups or statutory bodies. Information about the Down Syndrome Act, legislation relating to health and social care, benefits rules, parent carer forum activity, as well as more general information relating to support for families is shared via a closed Facebook group and an email list. ## **Structure, Governance and Management** The charity is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) who’s only voting members are its charity trustees. Currently the charity has 7 Trustees. The Trustees constitute the charity’s committee. The committee meets monthly – usually on the first Monday of the month apart from August. Since the resignation of our previous Chair in Nov 2022, an existing Trustee has assumed the role of Acting Chair until a new Chair is appointed. We have discussed the position with two potential candidates, however, have been unable to make an appointment. New trustees are interviewed and selected by the Committee of Trustees, subject to enhanced DBS checks.
