## **York Down Syndrome Support Group** ## **Charity Registration No: 1193370** ## **Trustees Annual Report** For the year ended 31 December 2022 The trustees present their report along with consolidated financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2022. ## **The Objective of YDSSG** We are a parent led support group based in York in the UK. Our overall aim is to create and develop the conditions which will enable our children with Down syndrome to attain their full potential. We aim to support all those involved in the lives of our children including family members and professionals in York and the surrounding area. ## _**What we aim to do:**_ - offer personal support to new parents or parents with an antenatal diagnosis in whatever form they prefer - host regular social events where children can come together to chat, play and learn new skills - provide information and signpost resources that might be helpful to those with Down Syndrome in York and all who support them personally or professionally - host regular social events for the whole family - lend useful resources to families and professionals - provide training for parents and professionals - provide weekly speech and language groups - promote the awareness of Down syndrome and encourage the inclusion of all within society - support high quality research about any aspect of living with Down Syndrome The trustees always ensure that the activities we undertake are in line with our charitable objects and aims. ## _**How we work:**_ The Charity delivers its charitable aims with three focus areas: - Education - Social Events - • Fundraising Funds raised support educational and information provision, resources and subsidise social events. Monthly committee meetings include performance reviews and ongoing activity planning. ## **Achievements and Performance** ## _**Educational Activities**_ During 2022 Chatterbox educational sessions resumed face-to-face every other week for the children attending Chatterbox. Chatterbox is our Speech and Language group sessions which are planned and delivered by a professional speech and language therapist. The weeks when they are not meeting up, our professional Speech and Language Therapist visits children individually in their education setting to review their progress and set new targets for the children to work towards. A training programme was circulated to all primary, secondary, and special school settings with Early Years settings informed through the Family Information Service. Training runs via Zoom to make it easier for settings to attend and is free to access. There were 6 sessions across the year. We continue to loan educational resources to settings as requested. ## _**Social and sporting activities**_ We held a series of social and sporting during 2022 including: - Regular Monday evening football sessions with our “DS Yorkies” team. - Swimming sessions for younger children at a local pool and a summer one for older children at the open-air pool in Helmsley - Alpaca walking for all age groups - Story Craft sessions for younger children - York Model Engineers trip for families - Opportunities to join in with events hosted by “Phab” – a national charity with whom we are affiliated. This year two of our families were given the opportunity to go flying - Opportunities to join with the local “Wet Wheels” CIC and in association with Alan Bott Charity to take rides on a power boat ## _**Fundraiser Event**_ ## _**“Kayaking down the Mighty Ouse”**_ We were supported in our main fundraiser event in 2022 by members of York Canoe club. Members of the group were sponsored to have a go at Kayaking on the River Ouse on 24 July 2022. Despite torrential rain, the children and young people had a very enjoyable time and raised £795 for the charity. ## _**New Parents**_ We continue to welcome new families to the group, both those moving into the area and those who were resident in the city at time of birth. York Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have a regular supply of new-parent information packs on their ante-natal, maternity and children’s wards in both York and Scarborough. ## _**Information gathering and dissemination**_ A key part of the group’s activities is sharing information that might be relevant to our families about national policy developments, local consultations and activities that are organised by other voluntary groups or statutory bodies. Information about the Down Syndrome Act, legislation relating to health and social care, benefits rules, parent carer forum activity, as well as more general information relating to support for families is shared via a closed Facebook group and an email list. Our group’s resource library contains educational material as well as large print children’s fiction and books for parents about the experience of raising children and young people who have Down Syndrome. These books are free for members of the group, and those who support them, to borrow by request. During 2022 we hosted informal coffee meet ups at which books and resources were made available to parents to browse through. ## _**Financial Review**_ Financial position at the end of the period: £3743.92 at Bank ## Reserves We aim to hold 12 months’ running costs in reserve. Running costs have increased since last year and are now c£7500 • Reserves held at the end of the period: £3743.92 As this figure is below the amount required for our usual 12 months running the necessity of expanding our fundraising activities and exploring more options to secure grant funding will be important in 2023. ## **Principal sources of funding** Our principal sources of funding during 2022 have been local fundraising initiatives supported by the charity committee and our family members. Fundraising options such as Easyfundraising and AmazonSmile, also enabled supporters of the charity to donate as they shop online. The charity benefits from regular monthly donations from a small number of committed family supporters. ## **Structure, Governance and Management** The charity is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) who’s only voting members are its charity trustees. During 2022 our chair of Trustees resigned her position. A new chair is currently being sought whilst another trustee stands in as acting chair. New trustees are interviewed and selected by the Committee of Trustees, subject to enhanced DBS checks.
