To increase knowledge and confidence of teaching staff to support
children’s learning about climate science and design innovation, through
provision of age-appropriate teaching resources in schools where climate
science is absent from the curriculum.

To advance the development of creative skills in primary school
children by increasing their capacities, capabilities and imaginative thinking at a
time when emphasis on design and the arts is in decline.
•
To promote climate science and design technology in the primary
curriculum as key life and employability skills for children.
•
To combat anxiety and feelings of impotence about surviving future
global conditions, which have been identified in a growing number of children,
and to imbue them with a sense of empowerment to find solutions for living in
the changing world of climate change.

To create diverse and innovative responses to extreme climate
situations over a range of design fields by engaging children’s views and voices.
envisaging their lives in the future.

To provide professional designers with the imaginative stimulus of
working with children from a wide range of backgrounds, and to allow
designers to develop mutually inspired proposals to combat extreme climate
situations.

To develop the co-design concepts to a level where they form the core

climate change information, dangers and solutions.

To create a model schools’ programme on design for climate change
and a public exhibition template that can be replicated or adapted by others

||Significant progress has been made on all the Objects listed above through our
activities during the year (see detailed summary of activities in Section D
below).
In 2022 six practicing designers worked over extended periods with 390 Yr 5
children and their teachers in 5 state primary schools across England. Together
they considered how lives will be impacted by the climate extremes predicted
to take effect within their lifetimes and imagined how these will be mitigated
through design strategies.
Adaptation, innovation and sustainable practices were imaginatively included
by the students in their narratives and designed visions for 2050. The children
presented their work to an expert panel, explaining their thoughts and
intentions. The designers took the children’s designs to their studios and
rendered them in CGI and other digital platforms, returning to schools to
present the students’ work in professionally finished form.
Kings College London’s formal evaluation of CCAC’s demonstration programme
in 2022 provided evidence of positive impact on numerous fronts, including
increasing students’ understanding of basic climate science, enlarging their
vocabulary, and developing design and verbal presentation skills. Increased
confidence in teaching climate science and design was reported by class
teachers, and children articulated an understanding of wider, exciting career
choices.
CCAC aims to contribute to developing children’s potential, widening horizons
and presenting a proven route to the government’s stated mission to ‘…put
climate change at the heart of education’ (Education Secretary’s Sustainability
and Climate Change draft strategy,published 5 November 2021)|

## **General**
**Summary of the main achievements of the charity** During 2022 five co-design collaborations formed CCAC’s Demonstration **during the year** Programme. **Designers:** 6 designers worked with 13 x Yr 5 classes over 8 weeks: • Xavier de Kestelier of Hassell Studio (Living in Extreme Environments) • Finbar Charlson of dRMM and Jack Cardno of Sylva Studio (Forest Futures) • Tom Kendall of Wayward (Community Landscapes) • Aurelie Fontan (Clothing/Fashion) • DaeWha Kang (Urban Play Spaces) **Schools:** The 5 schools for the 2022 programme were: • Ordsall Primary School, Retford (AF) • Springfield Primary School, Sale, Greater Manchester (TK) • Coppermill Primary School, Walthamstow (X de K) • Ashton Gate Primary School, Bristol (FC + JC) • William Tyndale Primary School, Islington (DK)
## **Programme Evaluation**
The complete programme was evaluated by a team from the Environmental Education Research Group, Centre for Research in STEM Education at King’s College London. Following data collection and analysis the team delivered a full evaluation Report and a Summary which found that ‘… _the CCAC demonstration programme has played a valuable role in introducing climate change concepts to primary school contexts and thus supported children’s and teachers’ basic climate literacy. Further, the CCAC project has introduced children and teachers to the nature and contribution of design in addressing environmental problems. CCAC has fostered the development of key communication and teamworking skills in addition to introducing children to specific design-related skills relating to creative and imaginative thinking and has provided rich insights into design careers._
_The extended timeframe of each project has been pivotal in allowing strong relationships to form, new skills to develop, and complex concepts to become established. The designers’ expertise, passion and enthusiasm were particularly key in engendering success._
_Further, CCAC enabled teachers to gain pedagogical confidence and expertise in teaching climate science content through design. Here, however, it is important to acknowledge that the increases in teachers’ confidence were due in part to their own initial courage, flexibility and openness to participate in an experimental project.’_
The report and it’s recommendations are informing our expanding programme.

Section D Achievements and performance
**Filming:** Radford Nicholls prepared films documenting the programme in each of the 5 schools and 1 compilation of all schools which will be finalised in 2023. **2023-25 Transition Programme:** A further co-design programme is in preparation for 2023 to 2025. The programme benefits from feedback from the evaluation, the schools and the designers. To reduce the costs leading design practices have been approached for pro bono participation of 2 designers. We expect to run between 6 - 8 projects. Verbal confirmed participation has been secured from Levitt Bernstein, Zaha Hadid Architects, Hassell Studio, DaeWha Kang Studio, and Arup Bristol. LB is paired with Springfield primary school in Sale and the first planning meeting between the two is in May 2023 with classroom teaching commencing in September. The other teams are due to start in 2024. Arup Bristol is paired with Ashton Gate. **Co-design resources:** To complement CCAC’s basic _Climate Science_ teaching resource, _What is Design_ teaching resource, classroom worksheets, a designer induction guide, and a classroom workplan are being developed for the Transition Programme. **Sponsorship and Funding:** In 2023 part-time assistance with further fundraising and marketing will resume. **Visual identity, website, social media, and PR:**
A graphic designer has been approached for guidance and an estimate of cost to improve CCAC’s visual identity. The website will be reviewed in light of significant new material to upload and disseminate in 2023.
