Wold Rangers Way - Chairman’s Report
Introduction:
The Wold Rangers Way was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in February 2021. The four founding trustees are actively involved in the operation of the charity on a voluntary basis with no employed staff.
The organisation was established with three clear ambitions:

To educate the public in the heritage of the Yorkshire Wold Rangers;

The preservation and conservation of the natural environment around Driffield and the Wolds, and;
-
The promotion and community participation in healthy recreation by encouraging walking.
The Wolds Rangers Way is a challenging circular walk which winds its way 44-miles over the Yorkshire Wolds through amazing chalk landscapes with dry valleys with stunning wildlife alongside vibrant market towns and ancient Wolds villages. It also captures the unique history of the Yorkshire Wold Rangers and ensures that their names and stories live on forever. In addition to the main route, there are several shorter trails providing a unique, progressive way to enjoy walking. Offering a variety of guided walks and events, the Wold Rangers Way appeals to local residents and visitors alike, bringing into the area people who want to walk the Yorkshire Wolds and perhaps stay locally along the way.
Developments:
‘Friends of Wold Rangers’. A small group of active volunteers kindly came together to support the delivery of events and projects. On behalf of the trustees, I would like to thank them for the invaluable help they provide – especially during the walking festival and developing the book reprint project.
Walking Festival 2024. The third Wold Rangers Way Walking Festival took place in June 2024 with 16 events delivered over the week ranging from short 3-mile accessible guided walks to the full 44-mile ‘Wold Rangers Way in a Day’ challenge. The festival went well with good attendance across all the walks and excellent feedback obtained from all those taking part. I would like to express my thanks to fellow trustees, helpers and volunteers for making the festival a success.
Completion Medals. Medals were produced and are now available to anyone completing the 44mile Wold Rangers Way in a single attempt. These are available to purchase at minimal cost upon request.
Merchandise. A stock take of all merchandise and walking guides was undertaken and will be maintained going forwards with agreement to reduce and simplify the range of merchandise being held. An agreement was put in place with a local book shop to retail the Wold Rangers Walking Guides. New branded neck scarfs were designed and produced in readiness for the walking festival and proved very popular.
Exhibitions. During the past year the Wold Rangers Way exhibited at various local events including the Yorkshire Day Market in Driffield, The Driffield Show and the Driffield Vintage & Steam Engine Rally (on behalf of the trustees, I would like to thank Great Driffield Radio for their hospitality and support with the latter two events).
Commuted Sums Funding. An application was submitted to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to their Commuted Sums funding programme. I am pleased to say that the Wold Rangers Way was
successful in securing funding towards a number of projects that will be undertaken on Q4 of 2024, namely:
· Wold Rangers Bench – to be located on Driffield Millennium Green (with thanks to the Millennium Green trustees for allowing the installation).
· Revised Wold Rangers Way Street Map – located on Market Place in Driffield (with thanks to Driffield Town Council).
· Revised Wold Rangers Way Waymarker Signs – adding the Trod names to the colour coded waymarker signs to further improve navigation, accessibility by replacing existing weathered signs.
· Wold Rangers Way Walking Guides – production of version 3 of our walking guides adding updates including the degree of difficulty.
Walking East Riding Festival. We supported the VHEY walking festival in September by delivering a 6-mile guided circular walk. This was over-subscribed and very well received by all those taking part.
Presentations. During the year, as Chair, I made presentations about the Wolds Rangers Way to many groups and organisations across the East Riding.
VHEY Publication. The trustees agreed to pay for an advertisement in the 2025 Visit Hull & East Riding publication which showcases the very best locations and events across the region.
Future plans:
‘The Yorkshire Wold Rangers’ book. I am really please to say that the project to re-print of the original book written by Angela Antrim has been completed. Sincere thanks go to Sarah Wilkinson for her efforts in moving this forward and those involved in the rounds of proof reading. Thanks also go to Hector McDonnell for supporting the project and providing an update on the life of Angela Antrim.
Book Launch. The above book will be formally launched on the 12th November with around 50 guests invited to Highfield House in Driffield. (My thanks go to the owners of Highfield for the continued support).
Memories of Wold Rangers. A project to collect memories and tales of Wold Rangers has been agreed. We are hoping that people will come forward with their recollections of Wold Rangers around Driffield and the Yorkshire Wolds so that we can capture these for a potential future book or leaflet. A A5 flyer has been produced and printed to assist with this when attending events and presentations. It was planned to attend Driffield Thursday Market during September but due to inclement weather this had to be postponed.
Driffield Christmas Market. A stall on the Christmas Market is planned to promote the Wold Rangers, sell merchandise and also appeal for memories of Wold Rangers (as above).
REYTA Awards. The Wold Rangers Way have been shortlisted as finalists in the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards 2024 with the winner selected at Bridlington Spa or the 14th November.
Walking Festival 2025. Plans are underway to design the 2025 Walking Festival during the week of 16-21 June.
