March **2012** **TAR** 2 **The charity carries out a wide range of activities in pursuance of its charitable aims. The trustees consider that these activities, summarised below, provide benefit both to those who uses our community centre and the wider community of Wales and neighbouring cities.** Rhyl Education and Community Centre is a charity committed to the educational support and providing free complementary education programs for people in Wales area. We champion and serve the primary goal advancing the education of the public in the subjects of English Language, Life in the UK and several ethnic languages. We strongly believe that this will promote social friendships and strong interpersonal skills in the future. Only through good personal relationships that requires good language skills, people can develop mental and moral capabilities to achieve their goals in life. **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** The supplementary educational support out of school hours which is provided by our community members and teachers on a voluntary basis act as crucial information and advocacy points for adults as well as children in our region. The language courses we provide are designed to improve the level of English of those who struggle to communicate and educate. Our programs aim for raising aspirations and engagement that are essential components to remove the language barrier hence reducing failures in the classroom or at work. Rhyl Education and Community Centre provides a program that is in direct response to the growing number of young people that are failing to develop the necessary communication skills because either they do not have advanced English language skills or understanding of the culture and social norms in the UK. Rhyl Education and Community Centre will focus primarily on young people with the aim of advancing community development through language and cultural education. The focus is slightly different at each level but the goal remains the same; prepare and empower the young person to make positive changes in his/her life. Rhyl Education and Community Centre’s mentoring programs will pair several young people with a mentor for several month initially before allocating them to a suitable class. During that time, young people will participate in weekly planned after school supplementary education, homework support and leisure activities at our centre which will improve the young person's confidence. Mentors will receive continuous training throughout the year and will participate in monthly meeting to report the young person's progress. Over time, Rhyl Education and Community Centre will create a learning environment that will be an invaluable resource to young people, aspiring mentors and the community at large. March **2012** **TAR** 3 ## **Our Purposes and Our Aim** Rhyl Education and Community Centre is being established to provide supplementary education, place and materials in Wales area for young people who are struggling in formal education due to language barrier, tradition etc. Rhyl Education and Community Centre setup three distinct mentoring programs: **Language courses:** This will focus on developing language skills of young people who needs additional support in language skills. The language courses we provide are designed to improve the level of English of young people who struggle to communicate and educate. **Homework support:** Some young people need support due to falling behind in their studies. Our volunteer teachers provide homework support and materials to those who are in need of supplementary study support. **Leisure and sport activities:** People at every age group need leisure and sport activities to develop friendship and social skills that will improve their confidence in communicating to others. These extracurricular activities are essential part of the program to practice the language and communication skills young people develop at the classrooms. Sports, along with enhancing health and fitness, would enable people especially young people to use all their senses and by choosing sports in their lives, young people can not only become physically stronger but also emotionally tougher. Our aim to: - Raise the attainment of people, particularly those facing disadvantages - Develop their essential skills - Prepare young people for the world of work and further study We do this by following: - Commitment and inspiring pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and instill a sense of hope in the future. - Responsibility and empowering young people in establishing goals and following through on commitments. - Possibility of expanding the perspective of young people to make them aware of their competences. - Supporting individuals and surrounding young people in a caring, inclusive learning environment. **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)** March **2012** **TAR** 4 Rhyl Education and Community Centre is a non-profit organisation that provides people especially young in Rhyl with additional education support programs and we will create alliances with other national organisations that follow the same goals. Young people are supported by our volunteer teachers building confidence and achieving goals by involving young people in the community through group activities. You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about: - policy on grantmaking; - policy programme related investment; - contribution made by volunteers. Our programs are free of charge for people to participate in our great programs. However, they will be asked to contribute through volunteering. Rhyl Education and Community Centre will build funding support from businesses and private donors in the community. Yet it will take three years before funding from these sources becomes strong enough to expand the program. In addition, each week in the weekends the charity invites a voluntary chef to cook ethnic foods to raise funds for our programs and businesses can provide cash or grants. Businesses are also encouraged to participate in our fundraising events that take place throughout the year. The primary expenditures for the program are for the salary of Program Leader / Office Manager and other administrative expenses. ## Section D Achievements and performance March **2012** **TAR** 5 ## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** Volunteers are an important resource in community work. This year our Charity has achieved to reach over 2,500 Turkish speaking people in Wales. This helped us increase our number of volunteers who then helped us organise and conduct more charitable and fund-raising activities than last year. Volunteers are involved in most of our community activities and we have now over 18 people regularly giving their time. Our language course and homework support sessions have proved to be very successful as we witnessed considerable improvements on some of the students who did not do well in the previous years.
