Achievements and Performance

Our third year as a CIO was marked by insights that we are a group in transition. While our membership numbers are still healthy and cover our low core operating costs, a ca. 30% decline in the number of members suggests the need for a period of introspection to see how we can best achieve our mission.

A significant attempt over the reporting period was an initiative to stage a concert in autumn 2024. Under the leadership of Les Thelwall, who put the idea forward, creativity and activities flourished, addressing challenges on the way, and we handed in our first funding application to the Arts Council.

While the outcome of the application, received after this reporting period, would ultimately be unsuccessful, we can take many positive points from this exercise, for example:

(1) Insight and experience in crafting a funding application, (2) exposure to venue bookings and required information, (3) an expanded repertoire of grooves and movements,

(4) links to and joint activities with other similar groups.

The final point allowed some of us to rehearse with other groups, and we brought additional material and training approaches to our regular rehearsals, driven by the concert initiative.

Beyond the concert, the broader context remains challenging: Rehearsals were subsidised due to low attendance, a stadium performance enquiry had to be declined as we could not guarantee the minimum number of performers, and other opportunities to generate sufficient income are increasingly difficult to secure.

Still, we performed at a London 2012 venue for the 2023 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. This indicates that the Pandemonium Drummers brand with our unique approach to performance still shows a lot of promise. Therefore, we decided to renew our UK trademark. To make our London 2012 link permanent and tangible, we now have a memory stone at Champions Place in the Olympic Park.

We are confident that we still achieve our object, and to ensure that we will in the future, we will explore opportunities to make membership worthwhile. Ideas are already floating with a view to eventually attract arts funding, exposure, and new active members.

Financial Review

Reserves Policy:

Ring-fencing of sufficient funds, currently £3,500, to cover at least 3 years of fixed costs in the event of a total loss of income and to meet unforeseen expenditure, to be reviewed annually.

Funds Materially in Deficit: Not applicable.

Financial Performance:

The reporting period ended with a deficit of £905.56, financed by our historical surplus. Unique expenses of around £800 were attributable to trademark costs and an irrecoverable venue deposit, leaving a recurring expense deficit of just above £100. Trustees accept this level of subsidy due a healthy current balance, but set an expectation to develop plans for sustainable annual budgets.
