Open Hands Reigate
Registered charity No. 1193298 Annual Report Period 1[st] September 2023 to 31[st] August 2024
Objectves and Actvites
The founding constitution, dated 23[rd] November 2020 sets out the principal objects as follows:
-
a) To advance the Christian religion in East Surrey for the benefit of the public through the holding of prayer meetings, lectures, public celebrations of religious festivals, producing and/or distributing literature on Christianity to enlighten others about the Christian religion.
-
b) To relieve the charitable needs of those by reason of youth, age, ill health, financial hardship, food insecurity or other disadvantage in East Surrey in particular but not exclusively by the provision of grants, items and services.
Our principal activity since formation has been to run a foodbank for those in our area who have found themselves in need of help. Potential clients make application on line or in person or via a referring agency, setting out their circumstances, giving the reasons that they require help together with an estimate of how many weeks they believe that our assistance may be needed. All clients are contacted regularly to establish whether our help should be continued or not. Most clients collect their food parcels from our distribution point, but those who by reason of circumstances, such as ill-health or distance, can receive home delivery.
With regard to advancing the Christian religion, there has been limited activity, but the food bank operates from church premises and we are transparent about our motivation and ethos.
It is undeniably certain that our activities have contributed to the public good, as with the cost of living crisis, many families have found themselves struggling to provide for all their needs. The food bank is a support to them
The Trustees have had due regard for public benefit in all of our principal activities.
In the period under review, we incurred no costs with regard to advancing the Christian religion. Other than relatively minor expenditure on insurance and IT, the greatest portion has been spent on the foodbank. There are no paid staff.
Achievements and Performance
There has been an average of 50-60 households per week receiving food contributions throughout the year. Some of these are single person households but most are 2-4 people, indicating an average
of 200 people per week are benefitting from the service. The need for ongoing service is regularly reviewed by one of the trustees, to ensure we prioritise those in ongoing need and assist people to move on from dependence on the service as their circumstances change.
There are over 40 volunteers registered, either as food packers, or as delivery drivers, taking food to those who are unable to collect in person. There are over 20 volunteers currently active in taking shifts.

In the period under review, the charity’s total receipts were £30,761

Structure, governance and management
The charity adopted a constitution on 23[rd] November 2020 which copied the Charity Commission model for a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) whose only voting members are its charity trustees.
There are currently five trustees. Thus far, prospective trustees have been introduced by one or more of the existing trustees. They are provided with a copy of the constitution and a briefing on the current position of the charity. Prospective trustees are then interviewed by the current Chairperson and a recommendation is brought to the remaining trustees for decision. There are no external persons or bodies with any right to appoint.
The trustees meet regularly to review and plan the work.
Day to day management of the foodbank is undertaken by a volunteer as is the monthly review of clients.
The charity bank account is managed by the trustees. All outgoings must be approved by two signatories to the account whether on-line or by cheque.
