CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
I have had the pleasure of working with, supporting and fundraising for, Wealden Works
since its inception in 2012, then under the guise of 'Tomorrows People,, and that was
even before we had any employees. Soon afterwards Tora joined the Team, with Lisa
recruited a while later, then Tomorrows People decided to take a different path, leaving
Heathfield altogether, and thus Wealden Works was born.
l am not sure how many students, or clients, we have had over those 12 years, but it's a
lot, and tnany of thetn are extretnely memorable, for varying reasons. It has been an
absolute joy to see the fantastic work done by our staff to achieve the results they have.
Lisa and Tora have changed lives, and continue to do so, with sterling support from
Parish Councils, local businesses, many residents, including some notable celebrities,
Wealden District Council, ESCC and local and nationwide charity fundraisers, without all
of whom we would not have achieved what we have, and we would certainly not be here
today, AND WE THANK THEM ALL! I know it's never easy, but it is always worthwhile
and rewarding. And the benefits are widespread across the immediate families, the
wider community and the individual mature 'adults' we eventually let loose into that big
scary world that lies just beyond Heathfield!
Of course we owe much to our founder, Rupert Simmons, who we lost early in 2022, and
he would be 'over the Tnoon,, (but he would never use such a phrase), to see how far the
charity has come, and what opportunities we now have in our new home at Tunstall
House.
Our heartfelt thanks go to all those who made it happen. Brian Bishop in particular,
whose brainchild it was, determined to find a new home for Wealden Works within the
boundaries of Heathfield, and there were tnany disappointTnents along the way before
he was successful with the new site in Station Road. We owe Brian and his fellow Trust
Board members for Tunstall Jubilee Foundation so much, and the timing was perfect,
with the recent loss of our original home at Heathfield Youth Centre.
But we do not do this work alone! With the help of all of you, and those we have yet to
meet, we will continue the valuable work of providing opportunities, and changing lives
for our young people, and not just those from Heathfield, but also from the surrounding
area, young people who, perhaps, have no concept of how brilliant they can be, with just,
'A little help from their friends,.

Objectives and Activities
Wealden Works, employability project was established in May 2017, operating within the
confines of 'The Heathfield Partnership Trust,, which showed an extremely successful initial 4
years, the project had run under the auspices of the Trusts Ltd charity status. With its initial
success the staff explored the opportunity of taking the next step as an independent charity
and began the process of registering as a CIO during the period of Lockdown in 2020. In 2021
Wealden Works achieved the CIO status.
Wealden Works is run by a board of 6 Trustees and supported by 2 full time members of staff
which both hold a level 3 in Education and Training and are qualified Assessors with one
member holding an Internal Quality Assessor qualification. In November they enrolled on a
level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and development. Wealden works core objective is to work
with those 16-24 year olds who are not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET). Wealden
Works offers 10 week courses enabling participants to gain work experience, complete
business tours, receive networking opportunities in their chosen industry and complete
accredited qualifications in their chosen field. The course also provides the social interaction
with peers and mentors and the routine and structure that is often missing from these young
peoples lives.
A psychotherapist skilled in counselling young people attends the centre on a voluntary basis
to offer counselling sessions to all of Wealden Works attendees on an ongoing basis and has
been working closely with Wealden Works since it was established in 2017.

Key achievements
Recently we undenvent our Matrix Annual Continuous Improvement Check and passed. This is to
tnake sure that we are still meeting the guidelines. The tnatrix Standard is owned by the
Department for Education (DfE) and ensures the delivery of high-quality information, advice and
guidance (IAG) services that enable people to reach their full potential. The Standard is delivered
by the Growth Company and is applicable in all IAG settings including education, skills,
employability, careers, health advice and money advice. In 2025 we will undergo the full
assessment again.
The charity, Tunstall Jubilee Foundation, who have funded Wealden Works in the past were
seeking an investment property in Heathfield and approached Wealden Works regarding the
opportunity to lease the property at a peppercorn rental once all renovations had been
completed. They had seen the restraints we were under trying to run a successful project from a
building for multiple users. A building in Heathfield was successfully purchased in October 2023,
which catne at a perfect titne as the current youth centre and our home for the project for the
last 11 years was being demolished
The building that had been purchased on our behalf had laid empty for 20 years so there were
major renovation works that needed to be completed. This work started in January and was
estimated to take 5 months. Within the time of moving out of the youth centre and the opening of
the new premises, we were unable to offer group work but continued to support young people on
a one to one basis, We did notice that as the lack of group work was missed by some young
people, this can be an important part of the course as it helps to build confidence, reduces
isolation and helps build friendships. However, we were still successful in placing young people
into employment and education.
In June 2024 we moved into our new premises which was fitted out for the sole purpose of the
Wealden Works activities. The first course to run from the new centre will start at the end of the
summer terni in line with the end of the school academic year. Being fortunate enough to now
have a shop front with central prominence within the main high street, we have found already
that this has encouraged new supporters such as local businesses wanting to connect with us,
potential volunteers and young people have also been walking in the door for support too. Being
tucked away in the youth centre for many years, our service had limited visibility and we were
reliant on word of mouth and prominence on social media.

Wealden Works
Wealden Works is located in Heathfield. This is a free etnployability service that is
available to young people living within the Wealden area. There is simply no other
provision in the rural stretches of our county, our initiative has stimulated young people
back into progressive pathways who are now making positive contributions to society.
The outline of the project is to bridge the gap between education and employment by
enrolling young people who reside in the Wealden area (between the ages of 16-24) who
each attend an intense 10 week employability course, delivered 3 days a week. Participants
attend daily employability and financial workshops, career assessments, work trials and
college tours. We also address other life skills such as confidence building, mental health
issues, and provision of a free professional counselling service to those in need. A 12
month aftercare programme is available for each young person who has attended the
course as that ongoing support is crucial to sustain success.
With no Job Centre located within the rural Wealden area, a current bus fare to the
nearest job centre which is based in Eastbourne is £7.25 return. once a young person has
signed up to the job centre they must attend appointments once a week. This equates to
nearly £30 in travel expenses in one month.

Wealden Works
In addition to the core business of the 4 annual intense courses, Wealden Works are
also active working with young people within the community in the following areas.
Offering a free consultancy/recruitment service to those young people who are at
risk of NEET and struggling to find suitable outcomes for work or education,
available by drop in. This service is available to any 16-24 year old Wealden resident
and in the 6 years since the charity has been running have seen an average of 10 of
these distance service users per annum.
Working closely with the local state schools, in the Heathfield, Uckfield and
Hailsham areas, attending regular careers events, assemblies and liaising with the
careers advisors and heads of year to recognise those students who need support
and advice prior to leaving school. In March we were asked for a second year to be a
part of the Year 9s employability day at Heathfield Community College following on
from the success of the previous year. This included running workshops on CV
writing and workplace behaviour for over 240 students.
. Wealden Works in in the 4th year of a bespoke mentoring programme with the
local community College. This was initiated by the school and is available for 5
selected year IO/II students each year who are looking to gain employment after
leaving school. This is delivered by Wealden works staff on a biweekly basis within
the school premises.

Wealden Works overall success rate for this financial year 2023-24 is 71Yo. There are times
when our young people are not ready for work due to certain barriers that they are facing.
With these young people we will continue to support them until they feel they are ready to
either enter employment or a volunteering role. Just being able to access a group setting
with other young people facing the same barriers as them is a huge step in itself, and can
have the biggest impact on their self-confidence and self-worth. And understanding that
they are not alone in their thoughts and challenges is vitsl. When young people have a
diagnosis of Autism or any other neurodiversity diagnosis, their journey of finding
employment may take a little longer due to having to work at a slower pace to ensure a
smooth transition into the next step of their lives. Many of our young people feel lonely and
isolated, but by offering them a place of safety with structure, it can give them motivation
and a focus to their daily lives. By providing a group setting in an adult environment where
they can understand from their peers, they are not alone in their journey and this has proved
invaluable
