A unique youth employment project that works closely with local businesses and key organisations within the Wealden community. Purposes Develop employability, social and life Develop motivation and self-confidence Benefiting the economy and communities within Wealden Creating a positive environment which transforms youth outcomes Objectives and Activities 'Wealden Works. employability project was established in May 2017. operating within the confines of 'The Heathfield Partnership Trust., which showed an extremely succe55ful initial 4 years , the project had run under the auspices of the Trusts Ltd charity status. With its initial succe55 the staff explored the opportunity of taking the next step as an independent chartty and began the pr¢xess of registering as a CIO during the period of Lockdown in 2020. In 2021 Wealden Works achieved the CIO status. Since the start of the operation in 2017 Wealden Works have received a contract with Skills UK. in addition in 2021 since registering as a CIO Wealden Works also won a contract with CXK Iwhole hold the National Careers Contract) and another wtth the DWP (Depemient for Work and Pensions) which was commissioned by Wealderb Districi Council. where we have also been awarded a service level agreement Wealden Works reputation for its success in achieving progressrons since 2017 on 87% of it5 attendee5 has been instrumental in its success of partnering up with larger organi5ations. Wealden Works is run by a board of 6 Trustees and supported by a manager and t￿0 members of staff, all staff hold a level 3 in Education and Training and are qualified Assessors with one member holding an Internal Quality Assessor qualification. Wealden works core objective is to work with those 16-24 year olds who are not in Employment. Education or Training INEEf>. Wealden Works offers 10 week courses enabling participants to gain work experience. complete business tours. receive networking opportunities in their chosen industry and complete accredited qualifications in their chosen field. The course also provides the social interaction with peers and mentors and the routine and strurture that is often missing from these young people's lives. A psychotherapist skilled in counselling young people attends the centre on a voluntary basis to offer counselling sessions to all of Wealden Works attendees on an ongoing basis and has been working closely with Wealden Works since it was established in 2017. rouN media Headline Wealden Works Wealden Works is located in Heathfield. This is a free employability service that is available to young people living within the Wealden area. There is simply no other provision in the rural stretches of our county. our initiative has stimulated young people back into progressive pathways who are now making positive contributions to society. The outline of the project is to bridge the gap between education and employment by enrolling young people who reside in the Wealden area (between the ages of 16- 24} who each attend an intense 10 week employability course. delivered 3 days a week. Participants attend daily employability and financial workshops. career assessments, work trials and college tours. We also address other life skills such as confidence building, mental health issues. provision of a free professional counselling service to those in need. A 12 month aftercare programme is available for each young person who has attended the course as that ongoing support is crucial to sustain success. With no Job Centre located within the rural Wealden area. a current bus fare to the nearest job centre which is based in Eastbourne is £7.25 return. once a young person has signed up to the job centre they must attend appointments once a week. This equates to nearly £30 in travel expenses in one month. Wealden Works is an accredited centre of education, parents do not get penalised financially should their children attend this programme. With this accreditation comes the 'Matrix Standard Approval, which Wealden Works achieved on its first attempt. All staff hold the right credential's for delivery of careers advice and guidance which include Assessors and an IQA {Internal Quality Assurance) matrix. qu8￿¥$[&￿&rd for￿f￿￿a ath¢e Ènd OL¥trance Wealden Works In addition to the core business of the 4 annual intense courses. Wealden Works are also active working with young people within the community in the following areas. Offering a free consultancylrecruitment serrfice to those young people who are at risk of NEET and struggling to find suitable outcomes for work or education, available by drop in. This service is available to any 16-24 year old Wealden resident and in the 6 years since the charity has been running have seen an average of 10 of these distance service users per annum. Working closely with the local state schools. in the Heathfield. Uckfield and Hailsham areas. attending regular careers events. assemblies and liaising with the careers advisors and heads of year to recognise those students who need support and advice prior to leaving school. Most recently we were asked to be a part of the Year 9s employability day at Heathfield Community College. Running workshops on CV writing and workplace behaviour for over 150 students. We have received some fantastic feedback from the year 9 students and their tutors. Wealden Works has completed its third year of a mentoring programme with the local community College. This was initiated by the school and is available for 5 selected year IO/II students each year who are looking to gain employment after leaving school. delivered by Wealden works staff on a biweekly basis within the school premises. There are times when our young people are not ready for work due to certain barriers that they are facing. With these young people we will continue to support them until they feel they are ready to either enter employment or a volunteering role. Just being able to access a group setting with other young people facing the same barriers as them is a huge step in itself and can have the biggest impact on their self confidence and self worth, understanding they are not alone in their thoughts and challenges is vital. This was the case with one particular group that Wealden Works enrolled earlier in the year. 50% of this one particular group had a diagnosis of Autism and ADHD which meant that their journey of finding employment may take a little longer due to having to work at a slower pace to ensure a smooth transition into the next step of their lives. Many of our young people feel lonely and isolated. but by offering them a place of safety with structure can give them motivation and a focus to their daily lives. Providing a group setting in a adult environment where they can understand from their peers they are not alone in their journey has proved invaluable. There is a huge lack in public transport in some of the Wealden towns and villages. Some villages mav have a bus that goes to another town once a weel butthere is no returnl The cost of an adult return bus ticket from Heathfield to Eastboume which is 16 miles away, costs £7.25, times that by 5 and that is a huge outgoing from a young persons wage. Which is why we try to match local young people to local jobs. Wealden Works Social Media and Website information Wealden Works have recently engaged with a professional marketing organisation to help maximise marketing activity with focus targeting social media platforms and website SEO (Search Engine Optimizationl. Social media advertising is cost effective and hits the broadest audience, Wealden Works are continually exploring ways to reach out to potential service users via social media platforms. It is vital that our website is found when keys words are input through search engines and the purpose of seeking professional marketing guidance. In turn we hope to see more referrals and greater local awareness of our project This is a priority for the next financial year. From website statistics we can see that we are hitting a wider audience since the last financial year. When looking at our social media data, it shows us that the highest percentage age range that looks at our pages is 45-54 years. This isn't particularly worrying, as many parents research organisations to help young people, so it is good to see we are reaching a wide age demographic. Although with the help of our marketing company we will be aiming to reach the young age demographic more. With regards to locations that we are reaching, recent information shows that we are hitting the right area (Wealden) but also breaks down into individual towns. so we know which towns we need to be reaching more.
