BBA also provides training, workshops and other educational activities in the garden on the subjects of horticulture, food growing and other related topics. Through these activities, BBA promotes the benefits of conservation, environmental protection, improvement of the physical and natural environment and biological diversity. ## **Membership** Membership of BBA is open to all. We accept individual, household and group memberships. Membership is by application through our website and the payment of a small fee. Once enrolled, members receive a weekly newsletter and invitation to volunteer to garden at BBA during our Saturday morning sessions throughout the year and Wednesday evenings during the summer months. We also hold over-55s gardening sessions on Monday afternoons in partnership with Froglife’s Wild Times. ## **Appointment of Trustees** At every annual general meeting of the members of the CIO, one-third (or nearest number) of the elected charity trustees retire from office. The vacancies so arising are then filled by the decision of the members at the annual general meeting by election vote. Up to 12 trustees can be elected. We currently have 9 trustees. ## **Objectives for 2022** - Increased activity with Froglife - raising funds to run indoor winter sessions at The Spinney on Clapham Common. - Supporting work of Butterfly Conservation - workshop with Froglife @ The Spinney - Connecting with Capital Growth - Good to Grow - Good to Grow link with young people through Heathbrook Primary - Horticultural workshops including composting, pruning, seed saving. - Also cooking workshops - chutney and jam. - Community engagement - Common People event on Clapham Bandstand & annual harvest feast - Work on Clapham Common - playground hugel, hedge planting. - Community engagement - Common People event on Clapham Bandstand & our annual harvest feast. ## **Trustees’ Report** ‘Looking back over the year at BBA we are always surprised at just how much has been achieved.’ These have pretty much been the opening words to our Chair’s report since taking over over the position in 2014 – and 2022 was no exception. It was yet another amazingly successful and productive year at our community garden, and the other growing spaces on Clapham Common we maintain. We ran gardening sessions on Saturday mornings, Monday afternoons and Wednesday evenings from April to the end of September – all well attended. For the past few years our Monday afternoon 55+ gardening sessions have been run ’ in partnership with Froglife s Leaping Forward for Dementia. Last year, with a grant from Lambeth’s Changing Lives programme we were able to hire The Spinney to trial running the Monday session indoors during the colder months of February and March 2022. Although these sessions were well-attended, participants expressed a preference for outdoor activities in the garden. There is a core group of around 25 people who regularly attend the Monday sessions. Our Saturday morning sessions are always busy, tending the community garden, the fruit beds by the children’s playground and our namesake beds at the Bandstand. Our produce stall at the garden gate attracts a wide range of visitors and supporters from the local community, making donations in exchange for our fresh fruit and veg, homemade pickles, chutneys, jams and plants. Further engagement with the local community was achieved through our workshops and events, which included... - - - February Winter Pruning Followed up in July with a summer pruning workshop. - Good to Grow – Linking with Capital Growth’s London-wide launch of the growing season. - Composting 2 – This was a follow-up to the workshop held in October 2021 to set up our new composting bays, which were funded by the National Lottery. - Seed saving workshop. - Common People – The annual community event we hold at the Bandstand in May. - Feast & Car Free Celebration. In addition to organised events and workshops there are often pop-up chutney or jam making sessions when we meet on Saturday mornings. The total number of gardening sessions, workshops and events was 115, providing more than 2000 participant experiences. Our community garden also brings joy to thousands of users of the Common who often stop admire it – and the scarecrows! All in all, 2022 was yet another busy and successful year for BBA, and the plan is to make 2023 even better as it’s our 10th anniversary year. When a handful of enthusiastic volunteers decided to set up Bandstand Beds Association back in 2013, who would have imagined it would grow into the fantastic community asset it has become. BBA is enormously grateful to everyone who has supported us over the past 10 years, Lambeth Council for providing us with a base on Clapham Common and for all the inkind support they have given us since we started our gardening journey, from a few raised beds beside the café at the Bandstand to our flourishing community garden on Windmill Drive. Ultimately though, BBA’s success is down to our dedicated volunteers – our members. Huge thanks to everyone for your support. You are what makes our garden in the heart of Clapham Common such a welcoming and an amazing community space – a wonderful place to spend time with fantastic people! ## **Financial Review** The full details of the financial activities of the Charity have been submitted in a separate document. The account balance at 31 December 2022 amounted to £7, 517.26 including a restricted reserves total of £1,000. The charity is totally dependent upon financial and practical support from its members and other donors and volunteers.
