BBA also provides training, workshops and other educational activities in the garden on the subjects of horticulture, food growing and other related topics. Through these activities, BBA promotes the benefits of conservation, environmental protection, improvement of the physical and natural environment and biological diversity. ## **Membership** Membership of BBA is open to all. We accept individual, household and group memberships. Membership is by application through our website and the payment of a small fee. Once enrolled, members receive a weekly newsletter and invitation to volunteer to garden at BBA during our Saturday morning sessions throughout the year and Wednesday evenings during the summer months We also hold over-55s gardening sessions on Monday afternoons. ## **Appointment of Trustees** At every annual general meeting of the members of the CIO, one-third (or nearest number) of the elected charity trustees retire from office. The vacancies so arising are then filled by the decision of the members at the annual general meeting by election vote. Up to 12 trustees can be elected. We currently have 9 trustees. ## **Objectives for 2021** - Incorporation of BBA as a registered charity - Establish a dementia-friendly gardening offering at our Monday session - Installation and commissioning of composting bays - Organisation of workshops and events ## **Trustees’ Report** Looking back over the year at BBA, we are always surprised at just how much has been achieved, and despite the challenges of Covid-19, 2021 has been no exception. We got off of to a fantastic start in January with notification that BBA had become a registered charity. This is a significant milestone on the journey from our humble beginnings with a few raised beds at the café by the Bandstand back in 2013. Spring is the start of our gardening year and in April we joined hundreds of other community groups across London by taking part in Good to Grow 2021. Our Saturdays then went into full swing and we restarted our Wednesday evening and Monday afternoon 55+ Grown-up Gardening sessions. In June, our Monday group started working in partnership with Froglife’s dementiafriendly nature on prescription Wild Times and the sessions soon grew in popularity. Recognising the need for this type of activity on the Common, rather than ending our Monday sessions in the autumn as we have in the past, we decided to continue them through the winter. From January to March 2022 the sessions have moved to a heated indoor space at The Spinney. This project has been made possible with funding from donations and Lambeth’s Changing Lives programme. With the easing of Covid restrictions in 2021 we were able to hold workshops and events, including Chutney Making, Seed Saving, Composting for Beginners and our Feast & Car Free Celebration on Windmill Drive. The feast was a hugely successful community event but the composting workshop was perhaps our most significant activity, another milestone on BBA’s journey. With support from Lambeth Council and funding from the National Lottery Community Fund we achieved a long-held ambition by installing three composting bays on the depot site beside our garden. We also worked with LBL to restore and improve the perimeters of the depot site, planting a blackthorn hedge along one side and fruit trees and bushes at the edge near the bays. Our garden was then put to bed. All in all it’s been another brilliant year for BBA: and as always, the Trustees would like to thank our member volunteers for the time, hard work and support they have given throughout the year. ## **Financial Review** The full details of the financial activities of the Charity have been submitted in a separate document. During the period there was a deficit on unrestricted funds of £341 and a surplus on restricted reserves £1,000. The unrestricted reserves at 31 December 2021 amounted to £4,273.98 and restricted reserves total £1,000. The charity is totally dependent upon financial and practical support from its members and other donors and volunteers. FOR THE PERIOD 25 JANUARY 2021 TO 31 DECEMBER 2021** I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Charity for the period 25 January 2021 to 31 December 2021. This report is made solely to the Charity's Trustees, as a body, in accordance with Part 4 of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the Charity's Trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an Independent Examiner's Report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the Charity and the Charity's Trustees as a body, for my work or for this report ## **RESPONSIBILITIES AND BASIS OF REPORT** As the Trustees of the Charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) I report in respect of my examination of the Charity's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act ## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT** I have completed my examination.
