## **Malmesbury History Society Trustee Annual Report Year end 31 December 2024** 

## **Chair's Report 2024** 

The Year 2024 for Malmesbury History Society and indeed for history in Malmesbury,  was  busy and action packed.  We were pleased to be able to support  Athelstan 1100 in 2024 during the celebrations marking the year Athelstan became King. 

## **Our meetings for the year January - December 2024** 

**January - Barry Dent** gave us a talk on Henry Goodridge and Malmesbury Abbey's West Window. **Anne Goodyer spoke on her research into the Malmesbury Chasse** - a reliquary chest now in the Museum of Art in Toronto.  Anne also gave us an Athelstan 1100 update. 

**March AGM and talk by historian and MHS member Tony McAleavy** - How Bishop Roger of Salisbury seized control of Malmesbury Abbey in 1118. 

**May - Hazel Humphries** gave us a talk on her horse thief relative from Malmesbury;  he  was transported to Tasmania and eventually became a policeman on mainland Australia. 

**July** - **Tony Hack** gave us a talk on the **Wiltshire Medieval Graffiti Survey of Lacock Abbey September - MHS member David Witt** spoke to us on his research into **The Artwork in the Whole Hog** and it's connection to Henry lll and Henry Tudor.  David followed this with the research into the places worldwide that have the Malmesbury name and why that might be. Christina Staff brought in some of her field walking finds from Rodbourne for handling. **November** - Dr Catherine Spence archivist gave a presentation on Joseph Priestly and the Discovery of Oxygen at Bowood. 

## **Membership Report** 

At the end of the year the Society had 82 members, a decrease of 10 members over the previous year.  Of these 82, 11 were life members.  Renewals remain due on April 1st since the membership year runs from April to March for everyone.  Membership remains at £10. 

## **Treasurer’s Report** 

The society ended the year with a healthy bank balance of **£6,523.37** , a decrease of £245.50 over the previous year’s balance of £6,768.87.  The income came from membership and publication sales.  The largest expenditures were on grants (to Athelstan 1100), meetings, events, and the website.  There is £170 cash pending deposit.
