Activities

How the charity spends its money

Love Leeds Parks supports community-led enhancements to public parks and green spaces in Leeds. We raise awareness about the wide-ranging benefits of parks, promote community engagement in urban green spaces and generate donations for park improvement projects. The projects we fund are community focused and add value to public green spaces, as well as prioritising parks in deprived areas.

Charitable Objects

Provide or assist in the provision of publicly accessible green space (parks, gardens, landscaped areas, woodland, recreational spaces, nature reserves and cemeteries) facilities in the interests of social welfare of the inhabitants of Leeds for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the object of improving their conditions of life.

Activities

We formally registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation on the 22 Jan 2021 and recruited a full board of trustees competed by June 2021.

Below are some of our accomplishments in our second year of operation:

Comms & Marketing:

• We did a review of our comms messaging and agreed the strapline: “Our mission is for everyone to have a green space on their doorstep that they love. We do this via communityled enhancements & fundraising”

• Led by our Marketing Trustee Lucy, we grew our social media presence to over 4000 followers:

Impact:

• Our volunteers contributed over 100 hours to the charity

• We realised over £3000 to match our proposed Spacehive campaign which is part of the Heritage Fund programme

• We raised over £3,400 for the Tree Planting campaign

Strategy Development:

• We held a number of strategic planning sessions with trustees and partners to determine the role of the charity within the sector.

• We went to a number of networking meetings, principally with The Leeds Parks & Greenspaces Forum and with Leeds City Council. We wrote and publicised a Love Leeds Parks strategy which ultimately informed our fundraising.

Fundraising:

• We partnered with Light Night Leeds as their charity partner for 2021. We fundraised over £250 on the night.

• We knew that greenspaces were more important than ever before, and that the focus had to be to build the organisational capacity to deliver capacity building, project delivery and partnerships.

• We spent the first half of 2022 writing a successful funding bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the Leeds Partnership Parks Project for an award of £249,995

• We recruited our first member of staff CEO Chloe Sykes to start in January 2023 and began our journey to being an organisation with staff.

(1) This grant of £249,995 over three years was accepted in October 2022, but the first payment did not arrive until 2023 Accounting year. The expenditure, recruitment and laptop enabled the CEO to start in early January 2023.

(2) Money raised for trees to be planted by Leeds City Council, cost to be paid out 2023.

(3) This is for small grants to Greenspace projects to disperse in 2023.

(4) This was Love Leeds Parks’ first year of operation and no expenditure incurred.
