The objects of the club are such purposes as are exclusively charitable in England & Wales, including in particular: 

- the advancement of citizenship by: 

   1. promoting the principles of good citizenship; 

   2. encouraging members to take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community;

   3. providing a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by members; 

   4. encouraging service-minded people to serve their community without personal reward and encouraging the promotion of high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavours; 

   5. supporting youth to develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals; 

- promoting the voluntary sector for the public benefit by associating with local authorities in a common effort to advance education and provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure time occupation to improve the conditions of life of people in local, national and international communities; 

- promoting volunteering 

- the relief of poverty and the relief of those in need in particular by providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief; 

- the advancement of health or the saving of lives by preventing avoidable blindness, assisting disabled people to lead independent lives or helping to prevent or manage health issues; 

- promoting for the benefit of the public the conservation protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment; and/or promoting community participation in healthy recreation. 

The main activities of the Club are concerned with 

- Enhancing our local Community by service through our own activities and supporting those run by other organisations 

- raising money for good causes and charities through Carnival Week, a Fireworks Display for the benefit of the Community, events leading up to Christmas, BBQs and other activities throughout the year

This has been a very successful year of fundraising despite heavy expenses to replace the lights on the Trees of Light and the need to buy extra insurance cover. 

Approximately £25,000 was donated to charities and good causes, including support for Ukraine. 

The Club’s work was recognised by a Club Excellence award and the Club is in good standing. 

The Trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

The charity makes grants predominantly to local Charities and Good Causes. We have contributed to Lions Clubs International Foundation which provides relief for those affected by disaster and supported efforts to take humanitarian aid to Ukraine. 

The Club does not make investments. 

      - Volunteers make an important contribution to our larger events through the Friends of Tavistock Lions 

- contribution made by volunteers. 

   - Section D                      Achievements and erformance p 

   - The year’s fundraising included: 

   - **Summary of** • A very successful barbecue season culminating in record takings at Tavistock’s 

   - **the main achievements** Dickensian evening (£2,500) • 

   - **of the charity** The Trees of Light that enabled us to donate £2.500 to each of four deserving **during the year** charities. • An excellent fireworks display raising £1,000 

   - • An enjoyable carnival week despite the carnival procession having to be postponed until September because of extreme weather conditions. The rearranged date, on a Sunday, proved to be popular and more family orientated, so much so that the next Carnival procession in 2024 will be moved to a Sunday. (£10,000) 

   - • The run-up to Christmas was exceptionally busy with Santa making visits to primary schools, bucket collections, Christmas Post, Christmas cards and calendar, hampers for deserving families and many other activities 

         - The Club raised money for humanitarian aid for the Ukraine and club members took aid to Poland for onward transportation to Ukraine. 

         - Mental health – the club funded a ‘Chatty bench to encourage conversation with those facing loneliness and created a webpage with links to organisations that could provide support for those experiencing mental health issues. 

The Club supports other organisations with their events, for example by closing roads such as on Remembrance Sunday, car parking, a park and ride scheme for Goose Fair, providing barbecues, tents or manpower for concerts or marshalling.  The Club values its relationships with all its partners and especially the Tavistock Town council and BID. 

The Club has an environmental project maintaining a traffic island at the entrance to the Town. 

The Club is in good health; four new members joined in this year. At the beginning of the year, the club faced an issue common to organisations, that members were happy to work hard for the community but were less ready to take on leadership roles. After some heart searching, however, a number of members came forward and a secure succession strategy for the future was established. 

Safeguarding is important to the club and a programme of DBS checks is near to completion.
