## Biggleswade Sandy Lions Club (CIO) ## Minutes of the AGM Meeting on 7th August 2024 LP Keith opened the AGM at 7.30pm. 16 BS Lions attended. ## Present: Lions Helen Bell-Day Ivor Dodgson Steve Foott Michelle Gray David Hagger Judith Hagger Dave Jones Keith Lewis Barry Livesey Peter Patmore Helen Robinson Jeanette Taylor Cliff Thornhill Peter Twigg Derek Wright Jean Wright Apologies: Karen Bird Tony Guy Mike Haslam Pauline Livesey Ian Williamson Guests: None The Reports all refer to the Lionistic Year 1[st] July 2023 – 30[th] June 2024 ## President’s Report The Club has had a successful year both with regards to Community Service & Fund Raising thanks to the efforts & dedication of the Club’s Team of Members. Details in the Reports of the two relevant Chairs. The Club welcomed 1 new member during the year. The Trustees held regular meetings. Some Club Members participated in all Zone activities - attending Zone Meetings, the Swimming Gala, Quiz & Drop in Sessions. 4 Members attended the District Convention. Several Members attended various District Training Sessions. The Club has maintained its agreed level of commitment to LCIF in respect of disasters. Wednesday lunches, outings and various other social activities continue to be very popular and are well supported. The Club held a very enjoyable Charter dinner and a Christmas Social. Two Trustees, Secretary and Community Service Chair, advised that they will be emigrating during the next Lionistic year, early notification so as to provide assistance to those taking over. Hence a new Secretary and Chair to be appointed and become Trustees. The Club thanks them for their many years of service, dedication & support for all aspects of its activities. ## Treasurers Report This year’s report reflects how active the club has been this last year with total donations up by £3,000 on last year’s total. The detailed accounts have been audited and a copy attached as a separate file. While total income increased by £8,500, expenditure increased by £3,502. This number is distorted somewhat by £5,112 received from HMRC on Gift Aid. This amount is from 2021 onwards and therefore is larger than normal. Thanks to all Members who work tirelessly to maintain this healthy balance for the Club. ## Community Service Report This has been an interesting year, which has seen the Community team meet regularly once a month, with much lively discussion around new and existing projects. Donations for 2023/2024 totaling around £12,000. ## Local Community Support - Food Bank support: Donated £2,000 to Preens Food Bank and £1,000 to Need project. Home Farm Trust (HFT): Purchased rose arch and roses for the entrance to their sensory garden. MIABs and Wallets handed out hundreds over the year. Had a print re-run of 5,000 MIAWs. Spectacles – collected and dispatched almost 8,000 pairs as well as some hearing aids. Wicksteed – 50 guests enjoyed thrills and spills and packed lunches supplied by Wicksteed. District Youth Party 50 guests enjoyed a fun packed afternoon. Shannon Express concert hosted 9 guests with tea afterwards. Zone Swimming Gala supported with BS members assistance. Biggleswade Rugby under12’s 2025 tour –donation. Tools for Self-Reliance – made several journeys to Milton Keynes with tools. Macmillan coffee morning hosted in September. Poppy collection and Remembrance wreaths laid in Biggleswade and Sandy. ROAR – Gamlingay School signed up for the year. Trays of 100 books delivery completed to 31 lower schools in area. Knitting and reading bags projects continued through the year, ending about April 2024. Caffe. Café Mocha. Food for Maisie, EAAA, Harry Burke to Costa Rica etc - donations Helped various individuals by providing curtains, carpets, beds etc Jake the footballer – paid for the ICE post op machine during recovery from ACL surgery. Rhoda – paid for laptop to enable completion UK Doctor’s status and gain employment Ukrainian and Rohingyan families. Donated £1,600 to LCIF, being the Clubs agreed levy of 10% of our income. It was agreed throughout the year, that this one off donation to LCIF would be a fairer spread of support to disaster fund. During the year the Club agreed that the community committee has authority to spend up to £500 before needing to seek prior approval of spend by full Club. Also it was agreed by Club that donations to speakers at Club meetings could be made between £100 and £200. ## Fund Raising Report Summer Fetes: we took part in 8 events, a similar number to last year. The total takings (not profit) were slightly up at £3,336 compared to £3,130 the previous year. The average takings per event excluding the outlier Ickwell was £300. The events were well supported by Club Members although we are starting to struggle with transport of equipment. We sold an amazing 753 lucky mugs. Thank you to all those who donated mugs to us and in particular Preen. Our thanks also to Pauline for acquiring soft toys for the lucky dip, the price of which was doubled to £2 from Ickwell (6 May ’24) onwards. Christmas Dance: great success as always at the Weatherley Centre and enjoyed by all. The profit of £1,180 was well down on the previous year’s figure of £1,736. The ticket price was increased to £30. Christmas Collections: we did 13 tinshakes at 6 different locations taking £5,377 after Sumup deductions. Card payments once again amounted to approx. 8%. This was up on the previous year’s £5,179 but with one additional collection. 17 Lions and 10 Friends of Lions gave 196 man hours collecting. There was a lot of illness around at the time and we were very grateful for people’s help particularly at short notice. As always none of this would be possible without towing of the sleigh by Tony and John Robinson. Father Christmas appeared each day for a two hour slot. Biggleswade Town Council: once again at their request we provided Father Christmas at the Christmas Light Switch-on on Friday 24[th] Nov. We also had a stall at the event. This year there was no Santa’s Grotto in the Market Square nearer Christmas but the Council still donated £100 to the Club. Sandy Market: Sandy Town Council organised an Autumn and Spring Markets at which we had a stall. These raised £409. Jumble Sale 23 March ’24: this was held at the Clifton Community Centre with total takings of £450 down on the previous year’s £673. The entry fee was dropped inadvertently from £1 to 50p. Easter Eggs: 20 eggs were purchased from John Bull Confectioners as usual and homes found for all 20. There were 3 new recipients namely The Queens Head Sandy, The Yorkshire Grey Biggleswade and The Plough in Langford. We made a record profit of £1,597. Logo Quiz Sheets ’23: we increased the price to £2 per sheet and the winning prize to £200. We sold 420 sheets compared to 399 the previous year and made a profit of £642. Ninety Four sheets were returned with 40 completely correct. ## Officers With the imminent departure of Dave and Judith Hagger the Officers for Secretary and Community Services have changed for the forthcoming year.
