Chairman’s Report AGM 16 June 2023
As our President Rt. Hon. Theresa May MP is unable to stay for the AGM, she asked me to deliver the following message:
“I would like to pass my thanks on to all involved in the unit for its success over the past year. Having read the Commanding Officer’s report, it has obviously been a busy year but the achievements are impressive. It is a team effort and thanks are due to all the volunteers but I would particularly like to commend the Commanding Officer for the commitment and enthusiasm he brings to the role which is reflected in the enthusiasm of the cadets. Well done to everyone”
This AGM is supposed to report on the year ending 31 March 2023; however, we will inevitably stray into more recent events from time to time.
Maidenhead Sea Cadets continues to perform well, the financial situation is stable, cadet numbers are increasing and both staff and cadets continue to achieve qualifications in their chosen fields.
We are fortunate to have a strong team of instructors with good leadership, this and the support and encouragement they receive enables the cadets achieve results, sometimes beyond their own expectations. In addition to the formal training and qualifications, the cadets have fun form friendships which often last well into adulthood. We aim to help with the development of our young people and prepare them to take their place in society. In the background there is the Unit Management Team whose task it is to ensure there is a safe, secure facility for this activity to take place.
We are now very close to signing the documents which formally hand over the land to the charity, this has been a long journey but the end is now in sight. Given the progress (or lack of) with raising the necessary funds to re-build the facility we took the decision, earlier this year, to make some improvements to the building but with long term in mind. The changes will be incorporated in the new building, e.g., new main entrance door, new gates, etc. We are working towards making a start on building work to ensure the planning consent does not expire which would mean going through the whole application process again. It is not only starting building work; we also need to commission various reports, which all cost money, these need to be submitted to the council.
As with any old building there is always something to repair to ensure the facility is fully functional and safe, therefore there is the never-ending search for small grants to enable this work without depleting the reserves.
Cadets and adult volunteers have continued to give their support to other local organisations’ events like the Royal British Legion Poppy Day, Rotary Club Boundary Walk, Lion’s Club Swimarathon and Duck Derby.

We have always enjoyed really good support from parents but we are on the look-out for more support, in particular we need someone to help with cadet’s refreshments on parade nights. If you know of anyone who may be interested or would like more information please come and talk to me, the CO or any of the committee.
Many of the volunteers give up their time, not only on parade nights but at various time during the week and at week-ends; a lot of cadet activities could not take place without these dedicated people. The role of Commanding Officer in particular is one that involves a huge commitment in time and effort, it is often said that it is like having a second full time job. I always conclude by saying ‘thank you’ to all the volunteers for the time they dedicate to the safe and successful running of this Unit, this is a team effort but every team needs a leader. Many thanks to all our volunteers and parents for all the effort everyone puts in for the benefit of the cadets; without this effort the Unit just could not continue.
