## Chairman’s Report

------------------------------------------------

This AGM is supposed to report on the year ending 31 March 2022; however we will inevitable stray into more recent events from time to time.

By any measure you choose, cadet numbers, qualifications achieved, financial situation, etc. Maidenhead Sea Cadets is a successful Unit; the Unit performs well, not only locally but nationally as well. Like every organisation there are challenges but with a strong team of instructors and good leadership these challenges can be overcome. Our cadets come from a wide geographical area and they have a range of abilities but they all achieve results, sometimes way beyond their own expectations, due to the support and encouragement they receive here. In addition to formal qualifications we aim to help with the development of our young people and prepare them to take their place in society. In the background there is the Unit Management Team whose task it is to ensure there is a safe, secure facility for this training to take place.

Over the last couple of years we have refined our plans for a new facility, 12 months ago I suggested that we would need to raise about £500,000; since then costs have risen and we commissioned a more detailed estimate from a Quantity Surveyor, the target now is £850,000. We are in a bit of a ‘Catch 22’ situation because for a major project such as we are planning, the majority of grant givers want to see planning permission, which we have, however the rules are that we must start work within three years or the planning consent expires and we need to apply again. It will take considerably more than three years to raise the necessary funds therefore we will need to start work before we have the money or we must re-apply and spend more money on the application and related reports, in the hope that we will get the same consent again.

We are very fortunate to have the support of Berkeley Homes and just like 12 months ago, I had hoped to be able to announce this evening that we have completed the formal handover of the land ownership but whilst the details are agreed in principal we have not signed yet. We have been negotiating on a single clause relating to Overage, which means we pay National Grid (the original landowner) a substantial fee if a new building exceeds a specified floor area. We and Berkeley Homes agree on what is acceptable but National Grid have yet to respond. My concern here is that I do not compromise any future development plans which may be required in years to come.

Given that we plan to demolish and rebuild at some point, maintenance work has been limited to ensuring the facility is fully functional and safe. Thanks to the Louis Baylis Trust and the Prince Philip Trust we have received grants to enable the start of the refurbishment of the pontoons, these are essential structures for mooring the boats and to enable cadets to enter and leave boats and canoes so need to be kept well maintained.

For the last 12 years we have enjoyed sharing the facility with the Maidenhead, Marlow and District Model Railway Club, however with the increasing numbers of cadets wishing to join

and with the opening of a Royal Marine section, space has become a concern. We will be sorry to see the club move on but it gives us the opportunity to look at the space we have and reconfigure it to be sure we can accommodate all our cadets.

Cadets and adult volunteers have continued to give their support to other local organisations’ events like the Royal British Legion Poppy Day, Rotary Club Boundary Walk, Lion’s Club Swimarathon and Duck Derby; thankfully these events are now back in the calendar after a break due to COVID19.

We have always enjoyed really good support from parents but we are always on the look-out for more support, in particular we need someone to help with cadet’s refreshments on parade nights. If you know of anyone who may be interested or would like more information please come and talk to me, the CO or any of the committee.

I always conclude by saying ‘thank you’ to all the volunteers for the time they dedicate to the safe and successful running of this Unit, this is a team effort but every team needs a leader. The last couple of years have been particularly challenging and to say that leading the team, as Chris does so well, ‘is not always easy’ is a tremendous understatement. However the rewards are really worthwhile and go some way to balance the times of stress. Many thanks to all our volunteers and parents for all the hours of hard work everyone puts in for the benefit of the cadets; without this effort the Unit just could not continue.
