Object and Purpose

Dringhouses Community Foodbank was created for the Public Benefit of “prevention or relief of poverty of individuals and families with young children living in the City of York or charities or organisations to working prevent or relieve poverty by providing food and other household items that they otherwise cannot afford”.

Dringhouses Community Foodbank is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). We are registered with the Charity Commission under charity number 1193115. We are also registered with York CVS, an organisation which offer support, training, funding and general advice to charities and voluntary organisations in York to create a tailored safeguarding policy and procedure to trustees.

Achievements and performance

The Foodbank has performed well over the last year. Since w e started operating we’ve served over 50 families and delivered over 500 food parcels. We usually receive heart-warming messages from our users on how much our food donations and parcels mean to them and their families.

We continue to liaise with our local councillors, Academy Trust and local charities on how best we can continue to serve and assist those in need in our community.

Running the Foodbank

The foodbank is run from the Founder’s family home in York. A room and garage of the house was reserved to accommodate all the donations for immediate or onward delivery to beneficiaries. As our name suggests, we initially planned to operate within the Dringhouses area of the City of York but soon had to cater to families living in York generally. We provide food, hygiene and household essentials to individuals and families with children who are struggling due to the hardship brought on by Covid-19.

With regards to operations, Dringhouses Community Foodbank does not have a referral or voucher in place as we believe it sometimes serves as a barrier between those in need and accessing help. Beneficiaries are assessed by the Trustees on a case by case basis to understand their level of need after they refer themselves to us. The trustees have agreed that we will continue to deliver food to families, with resources permitting, to ensure confidentiality and dignity is always maintained. This is also safe and in line with covid guidelines. Our belief is that no one, especially children, should EVER go hungry or lack access to a decent, healthy and balanced diet. And this is where our work begin. The Foodbank is on the York local food support list to ensure everyone in our local area are aware of us and can access us at all times.

We are unique in our offering. We ar e York’s delivery only Foodbank and we do this ensuring that everyone looking for help has their dignity and privacy protected at all times. As such we do not require users to provide a voucher or be referred to access our Foodbank. We take requests all week but deliver evenings and weekends with each food parcel tailored to a user’s need.

Our services have been brought to the attention of social services, YorkCVS, Citizens Advice Bureau, local GP surgeries, local schools, local authorities and other organisations who have referral or voucher

systems in place. If a user requires extra support, for instance domestic issues or finance management, we are able to signpost them to organisations best placed to assist them.

Financial Review

Since registering as a Charity, the Foodbank’s main source of funds including any fundraising has been through donations. In 2021, the Foodbank received a donation of £4000 from a donor at Best Foods Logistics/ Booker Limited, we also created a JustGiving page for fundraising and received a total of £267.61. We also received £100 from a couple (Mr and Mrs G) who live locally to support our cause. The founder and chair for the Foodbank also donated a total of £301.56 for the running of the charity. At the date of this report the Foodbank has a balance of £147.30 in our bank account.

One of our major concerns is funding to ensure we can continue running the Foodbank as effectively as possible. We are constantly looking for funders and donors to help us operate.

Structure, Governance and Management

Dringhouses Community Foodbank is constituted as a CIO and are governed by a trust deed dated 21 November 2020. The Foodbank currently have three trustees. Trustees were selected or admitted based on skillset and time to devote to the Foodbank. Between the trustees, they have legal, marketing, advertising, finance, health backgrounds to help run the Foodbank effectively.
