The Trustees present their annual report together with the financial statements of the Oxford Opera Trust CIO: 1193079 for the period 1st July 2022 to 30 June 2023.
Objectives and activities
a. Policies and objectives
The main objectives of the charity are to promote public operatic performances, foster musical education in young people through the development of youth programmes and outreach.
In setting objectives and planning for activities, the Trustees have given due consideration to general guidance published by the Charity Commission relating to public benefit, including the guidance 'Public benefit: running a charity (PB2)'.
Achievements and performance
a. Review of activities – Period 1st July 2022 to 30 June 2023
The hybrid (live/multimedia) workshop called “Tamino’s Adventure” that was developed in the 2021-2022 period, aimed at primary school aged children, has continued to be delivered in schools throughout Oxfordshire and beyond.
Our continuing partnership with Oxford City Council Cultural Partners, (October ’22) saw us take part in the “Future Creative Careers” day held at the Oxford Town Hall. 60 students from across the County, aged 14-18, came to the Town Hall to engage in Q&A’s and workshops presented by Oxfordshire-based creative companies and organisations show the students the breadth of opportunity within the creative arts as a career option. Oxford Opera took part in a morning Q&A; then led a ‘opera-specific’ workshop entitled “Life is an Opera” and finished the whole day with a live performance.
FUN 4 YOUNG PEOPLE - DISCOVER IN A DAY WORKSHOP - BEDFORD April ‘23
We were very excited to partner with the Bedfordshire based charity Fun 4 Young People - www.f4yp.org when we took another of our workshops “Discover in a Day” where we delivered our 90min workshop to 4 groups of under privileged young people who were participating in a week long programme of activities provided by F4YP.
We are currently looking at further opportunities to collaborate with the charity which would involve us heading to Bedford again but also providing opportunities for the young people to travel to Oxford to participate in creative opportunities in Oxford
OPERA IN A DAY WORKSHOPS & LAUNCH OF OXFORD OPERA YOUTH COMPANY
July 2022 - June 2023 also saw the very exciting development of a new series of standalone “Opera in a Day” workshops that
Whilst the OIAD workshops are delivered as stand-alone events, they are also part of the launch of Oxford Opera’s Youth Company. Our desire to create opportunities for our young people continues and this new Company will allow us to work with more young people than we are currently able to within the context of their participation on our main-stage productions.
RESTORE PILOT - NHS/OXFORD HEALTH
During this time, we were also working closely with NHS/Oxford Health developing an ‘in-person’ programme of care; support and practical engagement for members of the County of Oxfordshire currently under the care of Oxford Health/NHS and living with the impact of Long Covid. The RESTORE pilot programme was approved by Oxford Health/NHS and started delivery of the programme in November 2022.
Layla Moran MP (Lib Dems) is the Chairperson of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for People Living with the long-term impact of the C19 virus and Long Covid. She is very supportive of this programme and will be supporting us as we move forward from a pilot scheme to an on-going, and much needed, sustainable programme for the people of Oxfordshire.
The pilot was very well received and, although a small group of people as chosen by the NHS/Oxford Health, there was shown to be a very real benefit gained by the participants (both mentally and physically) as a result of taking part that there is currently an ongoing discussion with the NHS/Oxford Health about the development of further programmes that would be offered not just to Oxfordshire residents living with the impact of Long Covid, but also to people experiencing other health issues that NHS/OXFORD HEALTH leadership feel could and would benefit from participation on future RESTORE programmes.
CELEBRATE OPERA! CONCERT AT OXFORD PLAYHOUSE – OCTOBER 23[rd]
As part of our post-Pandemic public-facing recovery we presented a gala on Sunday October 23[rd] at the Oxford Playhouse. The original idea had been to present two performances of opera highlights featuring solos’ duets, trio’s and group numbers featuring soprano Anna Sideris, mezzo Hannah Pedley, baritone Felix Kemp, bassbaritone Stuart Pendred – all who had already performed for Oxford Opera alongside tenor Satriya Krisna. This was the first time Music Director John Warner conducted for us and it was also the premier performance/launch of the Oxford Opera Orchestra.
Given the social environment at the time the ticket sales were disappointing – especially for the evening performance. In agreement with all parties involved it was agreed that a single matinee performance took place.
Those who attended experienced a top-class concert. We lost Hannah Pedley to illness at short notice, but her replacement was amazing. There were 3 ‘stars’ of the event.
Satriya Krisna – Tenor. His debut for us was welcomed by everyone. Stunning voice and beautiful personality. We are all looking forward to him making his role debut for us as Cavaradossi in our TOSCA ’25 production.
John Warner/Oxford Opera Orchestra – Music Director/Conductor.
“The boy has magic in his hands.” which came from one of our Patrons, Sue Bullock CBE, an international soprano who has worked with pretty much every conductor of renown in her career. High praise indeed!
Oxford Opera Company/Trust CIO – despite the incredibly difficult circumstances which the pandemic created – Oxford Opera Company survived and continued to deliver on the vision of bringing top class performance to the people of Oxfordshire.
b. Fundraising activities
Funding for Oxford Opera Trust CIO comes from a mixture of private donations from loyal supporters, ticket revenue, charitable grants and grants from Oxford City Council.
2022-2023 saw Oxford Opera receive grants from the Oxford City Council including from the Community Impact Fund and one from the Round Table Lodge of Oxfordshire alongside a substantial donation from a private donation that has placed the Trust on a very firm and secure footing as predicted in the previous year’s report.
The Trustees are motivated to develop new supporters, new grant funding and new corporate donations while continuing to nurture the Trust’s longstanding contributors.
Oxford Opera Trust CIO prides itself on having cultivated a loyal following from local subscribers; opera/theatre and concert goers and will continue to develop a sense of ownership between local supporters and the Company.

Within this period, the Board of Trustees has seen the departure of one member who has been replaced by a new member who is also taking on board the vital role of Treasurer as part of her duties. We are also in the process of interviewing another candidate who it has been agreed by the Board would be a positive addition to the Board. Once due diligence has been carried out we will then be formally introducing her to the Board and updating

- a. Going concern
The Board is pleased to report that as predicted in the report for 2020 and 2021 the financial outcome for 2022 has stabilised with income in excess of expenses allowing very positive decisions to be made regarding short, medium and longterm creative plans and development.

Respective The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. responsibilities of The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year trustees and examiner under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,

to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and

• to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given examiner’s statement by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my examiner's statement attention (other than that disclosed below *) which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
