## **Trustees report**
This is the first report of our new Foundation.
We were established to provide a catalyst for economic step change with practical ideas proven in our home town of Alfreton which might be applicable elsewhere in Britain. Alfreton is a former coal mining town and research has identified 205 forgotten English communities of similar socioeconomic profile with 5 million inhabitants, many in the midlands & north.
As it turns out world events have already accelerated the urgent need for higher earnings to counter a rapidly rising cost of living which is predicted by the bank of England to reach a 40 year high by the end of 2022. Economic prosperity also needs skilled people yet scarcity of skills is becoming the defining factor in Britain’s poor productivity rather than scarcity of capital or R&D. The vision is to show that local people can be the leaders and achievers of the future.
Our philosophy is that home grown prosperity within a town is more sustainable than government handouts. As such we are concentrating on Education, Opportunity and Community. We’ve developed employability benchmarks for schools and David Nieper Academy is already securing a jobs, apprenticeships or places at higher/further education for almost every graduating pupil. We’re developing the ‘Spirit of Alfreton’ a community website for news, jobs and local information and we’re developing a garment ‘Carbon Checker’ labelling scheme which might encourage more British manufacture of textiles and related jobs.
The Trustees have approved a change to our financial year to 31[st] March to align with the yearend of our main donor, David Nieper Ltd.
