HARROW CYCLE HUB ANNUAL REPORT 2022 Harrow Cycle Hub aims to enable everyone in Harrow who wishes to cycle, to do so. We have had a productive year! Our main activities were providing Learn to Ride and Confidence Builder courses, cycle maintenance teaching, cycle hire, cycle recycling and inclusive cycling. We were supported by a part-time employee, 44 volunteers and partnership with many organisations. ## 1. We should also like to thank other volunteers who have supported cycling in Harrow: coaching; servicing, moving and handing out bikes; repairing donated bikes, supporting coaches, organising and administering courses, supporting Wheels for All participants, training, making tea and cake, organising events, fundraising, leading rides, clearing scrub, publicising our activities, minuting, record-keeping, design, photography, building our website and more. Many of our volunteers have been recognised outside Harrow: Katherine Saminaden was awarded the London Cycling Campaign Climate Safe Award; Alia Merali was one of CyclingUK’s 100 Women in Cycling; Shahina Chandoo and Iffat Tejani hold British Cycling Coaching Scholarships; Bryn Evans cycled 963 miles from London to Edinburgh and back over 5 days, and Jay Rajani rode the Salt Ride in India to raise money for Go Dharmic Welfare. The Hub, with a case study about Saba Khan, had a double-page spread in the Winter 2022 edition of London Cycling Campaign’s magazine. ## 2. The Year in Numbers Our volunteer coaches provided 76 places on Learn to Ride and Confidence Builder courses, including a course for 18 riders funded by London Sport in South Harrow. Our Puncture Repair course was attended by 3 riders. We ran informal cycle maintenance sessions attended by 7 riders. We welcomed to our Open Days in March and December the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Harrow, Council Portfolio Holders, a Breeze Champions’ (ride leaders) gathering and 140 other visitors. The March event had a Dr Bike session; both had second-hand bike sales. We hosted two Level 1 coaching courses training 21 coaches in total - 9 for the Hub and 12 for other clubs. We recruited 56 members. We encourage all those finishing our Confidence Builder course to sign up for local rides, to build their skills and confidence on the road. Volunteer Ride Leaders and Breeze Champions led 111 rides in and around Harrow with 549 attendances. Special thanks to Pragna Shah and Kevin Lynch, who between them led 67 of those rides! We recruited a part-time Wheels for All Coordinator, Maryanne Smith. She began delivering our inclusive cycling programme, using adapted cycles for people who find traditional two-wheelers difficult, at the Bannister Sports Centre in November. We welcomed seven young people from Community Connex with their support workers. ## 3. Partnerships We continued to benefit from the invaluable expertise of Voluntary Action Harrow. Harrow Giving featured our work on their website. Harrow Together awarded us £5000 from for Wheels for All; we presented our activities at their AGM. Harrow Council continued to give us space for coaching at the Civic Centre. British Cycling gave us bursaries to train more coaches. Krishna Mandalia, Katherine Saminaden and Mina Mehta between them raised over £1500 for Wheels for All. Other donors gave us bicycles, accessories and cash. Home Group kindly allowed us to use their basketball court for the South Harrow project. Maidenhead Cycle Hub were generous with their time in explaining cycle recycling. The Friends of Harrow Recreation Ground kindly hosted our Puncture Repair Courses; our riders did litter-picks in the park. Our partnership with Evolve Muslim Women’s Cycling Network blossomed, with volunteers enjoying Ride London together, time trials, coaching and more. Our coaches appreciated learning from Field End Flyers’ children’s sessions. We worked with ParkLife Café in Harrow Weald clearing scrub on their Mitzvah Day. Harrow Association of Disabled People helped with the recruitment of our Wheels for All Coordinator. National charity Wheels for All shared their inclusive cycling expertise on a volunteers’ training weekend, funded by Sport England, and have lent us seven adapted cycles. Community Connex brought groups of young people to enjoy Wheels for All. We began work with West London Waste on cycle recycling. ## 4. Funding and Resources Cycling course and bike hire fees were a key source of income enabling us to train more volunteer coaches, maintain the cycles and fund DBS checks and other essential costs. London Sport funded a pilot project in South Harrow to bring cycling to an area with fewer opportunities. This was very popular, but it was labour-intensive to transport cycles to the venue. Wheels for All attracted funding from Harrow Public Health, The National Lottery Community Programme, Laughology, Harrow Together and Walking and Cycling Grants London as well as being supported by community fundraising. We rely on Harrow Council for premises. Uncertainty has impeded our use of the Civic Centre site, pending its redevelopment. This reduced the service we could offer. We have not been able to site a container for adapted cycles at the Bannister Sports Centre and are actively exploring alternatives. ## 5. The Future We are already exploring future funding streams for Wheels for All. This programme will need ongoing revenue funding, as it charges a nominal fee to participants. It can support a wide range of people with disabilities as well as stroke, dementia, cardiac rehabilitation, mental health and more; we shall explore health and social care commissioning to enable inactive people to become active. We are conscious that our current fees exclude some residents and should like to obtain funding to offer low-cost cycle training to those people. According to the 2021 census, only 0.7% of Harrow residents cycled to work. Harrow has many residents who would like to learn to cycle. With premises and ability to plan, we can teach more people. We are working with Harrow Council to achieve a stable base for the Hub and fundraise for the future. We should like to organise more activities for children and families in 2023, such as a Diwali ride and a parent and child coaching course. We aim for a full-service Hub which could include cycle coaching, cycle hire, led rides, a cycle circuit, advice and information, cycle taxi, ‘rickshaw’ rides for elderly and disabled people, inclusive cycling with adapted cycles, work with schools and families, cycle recycling and second-hand sales, apprenticeships in cycle repair, meeting space for cycle groups, a café and more. Models around the UK show that such hubs are viable and can help an area to thrive.
