This is a massive testament to the commitment, perseverance and expertise of the Life Beacon coordinators and volunteers. Achieving this feat would not have been possible without a steadfast commitment to our vision of supporting young people to reach a sustainable future. The impact we have made in the last year has also been made possible due to our diligent adherence to the appropriate standards and policies we developed in the process. Indeed, one of my highlights of 2021 was the recruitment of our 11 dedicated coordinators. They are all currently volunteering in managing our established ten departments - Mentoring, Enterprise, Well-being, Faith, Mum and Child, Research and development, Training, Public Engagement, Finance, Administration. From the very first day, these coordinators wore the Life Beacon vision on their sleeves and their commitment to our vision was indeed reflected in the significant contributions they made in the past year. Starting from scratch, the coordinators groomed their departments from an embryonic stage into self-sustaining departments with multiple volunteers. Specifically, they recruited 54 long term volunteers to help run each department and support our various projects. Facing the restrictions of covid-19, we conducted various online and in-person projects, workshops, and training sessions for volunteers and our beneficiaries. Some included stress awareness seminars, exam stress events, mental healthrelated events, mentoring for young people, leadership seminars. In addition to these, we also conducted projects such as Going to University, Getting Ready for University, Entrepreneur Mindset Project, all of which were very popular among our beneficiaries. LBI | ANNUAL REPORT 2021 05 It must be acknowledged that the steadfast progress and growth we have witnessed since our inception could not have been achieved without our key stakeholders. Firstly, to all our volunteers across all levels of responsibility and contribution, I want to say a big thank you. Often, the contributions and efforts we make via our volunteering activities might be hard to quantify at first glance. But I can assure you that every one of your cognitive, financial, and/or physical efforts in the past year has had positive ripple effects in the lives of our beneficiaries. Secondly, to our partners, I extend my deepest gratitude. Life Beacon began only as an abstract idea, but with the contributions and support of our partners who shared our vision, we have evolved into an ecosystem of goodwill for our beneficiaries As the world slowly returns to what normality once resembled, the coming year will bring many possibilities, some as opportunities, others as unforeseen challenges. I acknowledge that some unexpected challenges may arise in the coming year. However, I am confident that our dedicated, diligent collective effort will bring positive results and lessons that will guide us into further growth. With the continuous support of our volunteers and partners, I am optimistic that we will grab all the opportunities presented to us and translate them into projects, material resources, plans, and events that will positively contribute to our vision of helping young people reach more sustainable futures. LBI has already reached over 63,000 beneficiaries through various projects under **Education** , **Mentoring, Enterprise, Faith** and **Mum and Child** programs. While it started with 12 volunteers, it has since then undergone exponential growth and development with over 74 volunteers across 11 countries in four different continents: Africa, Europe, North America and Asia. As of October 2021, Life Beacon has established 10 fully functioning departments which are led by volunteering department coordinators. These 10 departments work together simultaneously to accomplish Life Beacon's Purpose and Mission. Our long term volunteers are individuals who have decided to volunteer in the charity on a long term basis by working in one of Life Beacon's departments. Short term volunteers are not affiliated to a department but temporarily assist Life Beacon in taking part in short term projects. Both short term and long term volunteers are essential to Life Beacon's growth and effectiveness. Therefore, we make sure to invest in their personal development and growth. To ensure that our volunteers are effectively empowered, we evaluate the impact Life Beacon makes in their personal life. As figure 6 shows, 85% of volunteers agree that Life Beacon has helped them to develop themselves in their academic and personal life. These 10 departments work together simultaneously to accomplish Life Beacon's Purpose and Mission. ## **Mentoring department** The mentoring department oversees all mentoring activities of Life Beacon, including long-term formal mentoring, onestop mentoring advice and informal mentoring. The department works closely with other departments, especially the Enterprise department and Faith department to carry out mentoring activities. Please turn to the Mentoring section (page 23 ) of this report to see what Mentoring activities Life Beacon has done. this report to see faith activities Life Beacon has done. ## **Public Engagement department** Through various methods, including media, the Public Engagement department , engages with the public and builds strategic relationships with Life Beacon stakeholders. ## **Administration department** The goal of this department is to contribute to the efficiency of the overall organisation by supporting departments to perform administrative duties. ## **Finance department** The department's role is to strategically plan, organize and manage Life Beacon's grants, funds, donations and expenditures. ## **Enterprise department** The department is focused on leading and advocating for enterprise in the life of young people through various projects, events and mentorship. Please turn to the Mentoring section (page 23) of this report to see Enterprise activities Life Beacon has done. ## **Faith department** Life Beacon is built on Christian values; we believe that young people may need to have faith and a good spiritual life to build a sustainable future. Through our FaithBased Advisors' mentorship and teaching, the faith department helps young people grow in faith and develop their spiritual life. Please turn to the 'Mentoring' section of ## **Mum and Child department** We believe that building a sustainable life begins before and continues after the birth of a child. The Mum and child department supports new young mothers through education and counselling, and the new born babies by donating baby essentials which helps to ignite the appropriate love from mother to child. LBI | ANNUAL REPORT 2021 16 ## **Research and Development Department** The Research and Development department conducts research to improve existing processes and operations. The first process and operation the Research and Development improved was how Life Beacon collects and collates data so that we can measure our Impact. share knowledge in a secure way across the organization. Connecteam is the platform that all volunteers use to records and track the time invested in Life Beacon activities. These activities include content development, self/team development, projects and many more. ## **Training department** To measure our impact, Life Beacon takes reviews and feedback from beneficiaries after providing services or activities during each project. This is to ensure continuous enhancement of the project to the benefit of the young people. We also take reviews and feedback from our volunteers periodically to review the performance of the departments and their activities; and after every internal event (especially training events) so that we can continuously improve our activities for our volunteers and beneficiaries. Life Beacon has invested in various softwares and platforms which help to collect and create data appropriately. Our main platforms are **Typeform, Airtable, Notion, and Connecteam** . Our volunteers have been taught to use these platforms in order to help collect, keep and share data. Typeform is used to collect data and feedback surveys. Airtable is used to help us further organize the data collected on Typeform in order to turn raw data into useful information we use in the planning of new projects and improving current ones. Notion is used to store the information we curate through the two aforementioned platforms, and it allows us to store and The growth of LBI volunteers is very important for the growth of the organisation. Therefore, the training department provides essential training for volunteers to grow in their skills and knowledge. Below are the the Trainings that the department has provided. ## **Training Events for Volunteers** ## 1. **Canva Training** Canva is a great tool that LBI uses to create posters, flyers, forms, videos, cards and even to design our logo. As Canva is such an essential graphics design tool. The Public Engagement department taught volunteers to use the basic features of LBI | ANNUAL REPORT 2021 17 Canva to make most of the useful tool. The training took place on 25th September as part of our frequent LBI Family Social (volunteers' bonding event). 93.6% of volunteers who attended the training rated the training 5/5 for being beneficial as they **'learnt a lot..'** ## **2. Mental Health Training** On the 22nd July, LBI volunteers were invited to attend a mental health conversation event titled, **‘Green Therapy: In conversation with mental health experts’.** It was an interactive session with keynotes and case studies delivered by mental health experts who are Psychiatrist, GP's, Psychotherapists, Successful Professionals and Mental health coaches. The event was highly beneficial as it provided participants with a better understanding of how mental illness can affect a person's life and gave them confidence in helping people suffering with mental illnesses and recognizing early signs and risks of mental illnesses in their own life and in the lives of others. ## **3. Mentoring Young People Training** LBI Volunteers received invaluable training for 'Mentoring Young People' on 23rd September to help them to interact and relate with young people. The training was delivered by Hannah McManmon, who is the Head of Student Development Peer Support at Loughborough University’s Student’s Union. ## **Department Specific Trainings** Most of the training is carried out during weekly or bi-monthly department meetings. ## **1. Faith-Based Advisors Training** The Faith-Based department coordinator conducts Bi-monthly teaching and training to give the Faith-Based Advisors the foundational knowledge and skills they need to advise others. 9 volunteers have attended the teaching and training sessions. ## **2. Public Engagement Training** The Public Engagement Coordinator teaches and trains Public Engagement Volunteers how to manage LBI social media accounts and create engaging social media content. 8 volunteers have attended the media training sessions. ## **3. Administration Training** The Administration Coordinator conducts weekly department meeting in which volunteers are taught how to carry out basic administrative tasks such as writing minutes, sending emails, using Canva to create documents and posters. Informal training is also provided whenever it is needed. 7 volunteers have attended the administration training sessions. ## **4. Finance Training** The finance department volunteers are taught how to manage the donations, grants and expenditures of LBI. 5 volunteers have attended the finance training sessions. With the support of the Training department, department Coordinators provide necessary training for their department volunteers so that they can be equipped to do the work. Life Beacon has also embarked on projects to faciliatate education in the lives of young people through:** 1. **The Going to University Project** 2. **The Getting ready for University Project** 3. **The Back to School Project** L B I | A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 2 1 1 9 ## OUR MISSIONOUR FACILITATING EDUCATION ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND PURPOSE PROJECTS **Facilitating Education Projects** Life Beacon has embarked on 3 major projects to facilitate education. The **Going to University project** and the **Getting Ready for University** project helps college and sixth form students prepare for university so they can successfully integrate into higher education. The **Back to School project** on the other hand, supports students in primary and secondary education to succeed in their education by providing essential school items needed to effectively participate in school activities. ## **Getting Ready for University** The Getting Ready for University project is divided into two parts: ## 1. **Home Students University Tips Project** ## 2. **International Students University Tips Project** This project consisted of home and International University students talking about their university experience and providing tips for upcoming university students through blogs and videos which were compiled to create **Getting ready for University documentaries** . ## **Going to University Project-Loughborough Student Union ACTION Project** The purpose of the project is to help guide college and sixth form students to get ready for university and life in a career. In this project we conduct various activities with the students of the college/ sixth form who are either at GCSE’s or A Levels stages where they need to start thinking about what they will do post college. In 2021, we successfully launched the project by visiting De Lisle CollegeLoughborough Uk, who is our first beneficiary of the project with 120 year 12 students. 99% of the student Figure 7 beneficiaries found the project very useful and wanted more support like the support Life Beacon provides. **The project was useful, I The project taught would like more support me nothing new. like this. **Gained a better Decreased fear and understanding of the skepticism of higher financial implications of education higher education** **Outcome for beneficiaries of the Getting Ready for University Project** ## **Back to School Project** Life Beacon successfully launched the Back to School Project which focuses on visiting schools within underprivileged communities to donate some essential back to school items; speak to the students, encouraging them and give them some words of wisdom on the importance of education. In 2021, we successfully visited **Christ Ambassador's School** in Ghana and **Koudougou 1,2,3** in Côte D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). However, not everyone understands how important it is to manage stress or even know how to manage stress effectively. Knowing how to effectively manage stress will help improve students' health, mood and boost their immune system. Being in a constant state of stress will put students at risk of developing serious health and psychological issues. As part of Life Beacon's mission to support young people to build sustainable lives, Life Beacon has partnered with L'Afrik society and Loughborough Student Union (Welfare and Diversity Section) to provide university students with helpful tips to manage their stress so they can improve their health, focus better on their education and excel in that area of their life. ## **Stress Awareness Seminar** Life Beacon was invited as guest speakers on the topic of Stress Management at L'Afrik society's (Loughborough Student Union society) **Stress Awareness Seminar** which was in recognition of **International Stress Awareness Week.** . This was a seminar organised to help students deal with stress in various aspects of life including education and relationships. Overall, over 30 students attended the event. ## **Exam Stress Event** Life Beacon partnered with Loughborough Student Union Welfare and Diversity section to organise and host an event to help students deal with the stress of exams and deadlines. 14 students attended the event. LBI | ANNUAL REPORT 2021 22 ## MENTORING **Life Beacon uses mentoring as an approach to help young people to develop their skills, capacities, and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals.** **Under the Mentoring section is the Enterprise and Faith department.** L B I | A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 2 1 2 3 ## OUR MISSION YOUTH AND PURPOSE ENTREPRENEURSHIP The Enterprise department at Life Beacon mentors and empowers young people by equipping them with tools, skills, confidence, connections, and the mindset required to navigate the business world and start successful business ventures. This has been done through one on one mentoring sessions and live Instagram sessions. ## **Enterprise Weekly Instagram Live** The Enterprise department hosted an Instagram live series titled 'Enterprise Weekly' for 2 weeks in September to give the public an opportunity to ask questions related to enterprise topics such as starting a business, investing, selling products online and much more. The Enterprise department also invited volunteers from Public Engagement department, Administration department and Faith department to also answer the public's questions and discuss on some topics that were raised such as 'essential skills for entrepreneurs' and 'managing finances'. **Instagram followers**| ## **One on One Mentoring** The Enterprise department has supported 8 new businesses through One on One mentorship. The new businesses owners received continuous free expert advice from the Enterprise mentor to help them establish and grow their business. The businesses that received support covered various industries such as food, technology and finance. LBI | ANNUAL REPORT 2021 24 ## OUR MISSION FAITH AND AND PURPOSE SPIRITUALITY The Faith department supports Life Beacon to create an environment where young people can develop a good christian life. Life Beacon believes young people may need to have faith and develop a good spiritual life to build a sustainable future. Through our Faith-Based Advisors' mentorship and teaching, the Faith department helps young people grow their faith and develop their spiritual life. ## **Leadership Online Seminar** On November 13th, the Faith-Based Department hosted a Leadership seminar titled "Leadership: The Place of Character, Influence and Power". The guest speaker, Yves Okpure, from Nigeria taught LBI volunteers and guests how to be effective leaders from a christian and a general perspective. 45 people attended the Seminar. It was successful as all participants found the seminar beneficial; 69% of all participants rated the seminar a 5/5. **Countries people joined the leadership seminar from** Figure 11 50% of the participants of the Leadership Seminar attended from the UK and 38% attended from Ghana. The attendance reflects the demographic of Life Beacon volunteers, majority of volunteers are in the UK and Ghana. **How beneficial the leadership seminar was** Figure 12 LBI | ANNUAL REPORT 2021 25 ## **Dominant World Faiths online Seminar** The Faith-Based Department also hosted a 'Dominant World's Faiths' seminar for LBI volunteers and external guests on November 27th. 32 people attended the Seminar. Our guest speaker, Augustine OwusuAnsah from Canada, broke down the basic fundamental doctrines of dominant world faiths which Includes Islam and Buddhism. The event helped attendants to better understand the dominant world faiths . Attendants also asked questions after the guest speaker finished his talk. 50% of the participants of the seminar attended from the UK and the other 50% attended from Ghana. LBI | ANNUAL REPORT 2021 26 ## MUM AND CHILD **Life Beacon believes that the first few weeks of a new-born’s life is the most critical for building a sustainable life so in 2020, Life Beacon launched the Mother at Birth Project to help new mothers to nurture the new- born babies.** **The Mother at Birth Project aims to ignite the appropriate love from new mothers to new-born babies so that the child can experience healthy growth and development. The Project involves visiting government hospitals in underprivileged communities to donate essentials to new mothers and new born babies. In 2020, we visited 3 different hospitals in Ghana: Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital; Madina Polyclinic Rawlings Circle Hospital and Madina PolyClinic Kekele Hospital.** L B I | A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 2 1 2 7 Volunteers & ## OUR MISSION MOTHER AT BIRTH AND PURPOSE PROJECT Partnerships For the Mother at Birth project, we visited the 3 hospitals in Ghana. We donated baby essentials in medium sized buckets to new mothers and expecting mothers. The buckets (which can be used for clean water) contained baby essentials like diapers, wipes, baby wash, lotion, powder, towel and grooming kit. We had discussions with the new mothers and expecting mothers so we could understand their experiences and empathize . LBI | ANNUAL REPORT 2021 30 ## OUR MISSION FUNDRAISING AND PURPOSE CAMPAIGNS ## **Go Fund Me** To raise money for our Yearly Mother at Birth project, we opted for crowdfunding through Go Fund Me and direct donations through our website In total, we raised £1,459 for the Mother at Birth project of which the money was used to buy essential baby supplies for underprivileged new mothers and new born babies such as wipes and lotion. ## **Donations from other Organisations** ## **Things To Get Us** We also give donors the option to directly donate the baby essentials through Things To Get Us. ## **Spreading Love and Dominion Life Ministries International** Spreading love and Dominion Life donated money towards the Mother at Birth Project. ## **Operation Jingle Bells** Loughborough University's Student Unior chose LBI as one of the charities it will donate to for its Yearly Operations Jingle Bells fundraiser project. The proceeds from the donations will go to our Back to school and Mother at Birth projects.
