# **HOLY APOSTLES PARISH CHURCH, LEICESTER ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL**
## **FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[ST] DECEMBER 2021**
## **AIMS AND PURPOSES**
Holy Apostles Parochial Church Council (PCC) has the responsibility of working together with the Priest-in-Charge, Curate, associate minister, the wardens and staff in promoting, in the ecclesiastical parish, the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical.
The PCC is also responsible for the maintenance of the church building and hall of Holy Apostles, at the junction of Fosse Road South and Imperial Avenue, Leicester.
## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
We seek to build up the congregation through:-
- worship, prayer and teaching
- pastoral care
- outreach to the community
- responding to the needs of the church and community through the occasional services
To facilitate this work it is important that we maintain the fabric of Holy Apostles Church and hall.
## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**
We minister to our congregation through our Sunday services. The on-going Covid-19 pandemic meant that our services were solely on-line via YouTube until Easter 2021. After this we held a weekly 10:30 service in the church under strict covid guidelines including masks, track and trace and social distancing. As the government guidelines changed so did the level of restriction. Services were initially available both on YouTube and in person. In the autumn we began to live stream the services rather than pre-record them. Despite the emergence of the Omicron variant in December our Christmas services went ahead as planned with restricted numbers.
Prayer is encouraged through the monthly Prayer Diary and the church was open occasionally for prayer. As a church we supported the Global prayer initiative ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ with material distributed to all and in the autumn held a prayer day and began having prayer gatherings twice a month.
In September our discipleship groups resumed meeting in either homes or the church hall for mutual encouragement in bible study and everyday faith . For the rest of the year bible reading material was circulated.
There were 52 people on the Electoral Roll (as at 31.12.21) of whom 13 are resident in the parish. The in-person Sunday attendance counted during October, was 36 adults and 4 under 16 yrs
Attendance is usually increased considerably for festivals, the 2021 Christingle service, despite capping numbers in line with our Covid-19 risk assessment 64 adults and 27 under 16) The Christmas Tree Festival and fayre attracted over 200 children for school visits, plus accompanying staff and volunteers.
Imperial Avenue school returned to church for a special assembly at harvest and Christmas and were accompanied by staff. Parents were not permitted due to covid.. St Mary’s School year 4 children held their carol service in church with 120 children and 66 adults in attendance.
During 2021 we have celebrated 5 Baptisms of children. There were 2 weddings, 4 funerals in church and a further 2 at the crematorium.
**Pastoral Care** is an important feature of the church’s ministry, with visits to the sick and housebound. Two Pastoral Assistants help in this ministry. Most visits were curtailed in early 2021 and the phone buddy system kept everyone connected and supported.
**Safeguarding** is taken seriously by the PCC and the Promoting a Safer Church document has been adopted. The church has policies for the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults and those involved in children’s work have DBS checks. The PCC has complied with the duty to have regard to the House of Bishops guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
The safeguarding coordinator is Jacquie Bone and Ashley Prince takes a lead in the safeguarding of vulnerable adults.
**Mission and outreach** is strategic and multi-faceted. However Covid-19 lockdown and restrictions severely curtailed what we could do. Mosaic foodbank became a focus for our support and we were able to provide a meeting space for both the Leicester City Contact Centre and Reach Leicester to continue their vital support work for vulnerable people. During the summer we visited the people who live in the streets immediately surrounding the church. Later in the year our work with pre-school children and their carers,(Tiddlywinks) was able to restart and has grown significantly. We experimented with adventure church and our monthly lunch club (Souper-group) also re-launched. In October we started a community café which will be developed further in 2022.
The church supports **Christian partners** working abroad. We support the work of INF specifically by funding the work of Nepalese nationals at the Green Pastures hospital. The church also supports Andrew Fanstone in his work with Iris Ministries in Brazil.
We also support Christian Aid and Open Doors as well as local charities, One Roof Leicester, Mosaic Foodbank and Sound Café Leicester. The offering from the Christingle Service went to support the work of the Children’s Society.
**Our buildings** are a vital resource in our mission. As things reopened they were used for church events, Brownies, various exercise and community groups as well New Covenant Church and Reach Leicester Church. We continued to be able to provide a space for the Leicester City Contact Centre until their city centre base reopened.
Stephen Gorton continued to support us as project manager overseeing the redevelopment of the church and site to make it fit for purpose.
## **West Leicester Mission Partnership**
Holy Apostles is part of the West Leicester Mission Partnership. This Partnership encompasses the churches of St. Anne, St. Paul & St. Augustine, The Martyrs, Holy Apostles, St. Peter’s Braunstone Park, St Margaret’s, Wyggestons and Sound Café BMO.
The Mission Partnership leaders continued to meet weekly for morning prayer on zoom throughout 2021.
## **Churches Together in South West Leicester**
This meeting has not resumed since the start of the Covid pandemic.
## **Deanery Synod**
The APCM is entitled to elect two people to the Deanery Synod who are ex-officio on the PCC. This provides the PCC with an important link between the parish and the wider structures of the church.
**2021 staffing developments,** Revd Jenny Ridge (curate) continued to lead the church forward with the support and encouragement of Rev’d John McGinley (Priest in charge) and Rev’d Tony Leighton (assistant minister). In June 2021 Revd Jenny Ridge became Priest in charge following the end of her curacy and the departure of Revd McGinley. We have provided placements for two interns on the New Wine Discipleship Programme, Srini Korrai (until July 2020) and Laura Drechsler (from September 2020.) They both lived in the Community of the Tree of Life.
Kate Szejnmann continued with us for her context placement as part of her training for ordained ministry and became curate following her ordination in October 2021.
Margo Henry continues to work in the office as our church administrator.
Sarah Standly resigned from her post as premises officer, due to ill health and Francis Hruszka took on the role of Church cleaner in July 2021.
## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
The pandemic continued to impact us financially in 2021 but we received a further Coronavirus Support Grant from the Council which was a significant help. Expenditure was down significantly compared to 2020 mostly due to the Hall roof costs in that year. Energy costs have risen significantly as we all know but the impact of this in 2021 was limited as the high winter fuel bills arrived at the start of 2022. Planned
giving was reduced from £45,500 to £39,500 which is a trend that we would not want to continue. However at the end of the year we had a significant surplus of almost £10,000 and we the PCC took that into account when increasing our Parish Contribution despite our income declining.
## **VOLUNTEERS**
We are extremely grateful to all who volunteer in whatever capacity to enable the ministry of the church to progress. Thanks go particularly to those who have cleaned the church, maintained the church garden’s and kept the carpark tidy as well as those who serve in a variety of ways on a Sunday.
## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**
The members of the PCC are either ex-officio or elected by the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) in accordance with Church Representation Rules.
The PCC members are responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern and importance to the parish.
The PCC met on six occasions during the year (January, March, May, July, September and November) The meetings were on zoom until September.
The PCC has a Standing Committee which has power to transact the business of the PCC between its meetings subject to any directions given by the Council.
## **ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION**
The parish church of Holy Apostles is located in the West End area of the city of Leicester, at the junction of Fosse Road South and Imperial Avenue. It is part of the Diocese of Leicester within the Church of England. Correspondence should be addressed to Holy Apostles Church, Fosse Road South, Leicester LE3 1AD.
The PCC is a corporate body (PCC Powers Measure 1956, Church Representation Rules 2006) and Charity Registration was completed in January 2021. Holy Apostles, Leicester is a Registered Charity in England and Wales No: 1192946
Holy Apostles started 2021 with a Priest-in-Charge, Revd. John McGinley, who left in May 2021. a curate Revd Jenny Ridge who became Priest in charge in June 2021, and an associate Priest, Revd. Tony Leighton. In October 2021 Revd Kate Szejnmann became curate in the Parish. Ministry at Apostles is supported by the Readers Ian Newcombe and Denis Walsh and the authorised Pastoral Assistants, Sylvia Herbert and Ashley Prince.

- **9 Related Party Transactions**
In the year ended 31 December 2021 it is noted that Holy Apostles paid LDBF £ 37,104 relating to our Parish Share, parochial fees and payroll run on behalf of Holy Apostles. Additionally £1,026 was paid to Holy Trinity PCC for expenditure incurred on behalf of Holy Apostles.
- **10 Reserves Policy 11 Description of Funds Funds designated for the redevelopment of the church building:**
The amount to be designated as the Reserve is an amount sufficient to maintain normal ongoing operations for a 4 month period, currently set at £24,000. (See PCC Finance Policy)
