## Trustees’ Report
The Trustees present their annual report together with the financial statements of the Charity for the year ended 31 December 2023.
## Public Benefit
The trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission. The trustees consider that as The Maya Ariburnu Foundations activities are focused in extreme poverty in Uganda, that the activities of the CIO provide significant public benefit.

The Maya Ariburnu Foundation is founded by Maya Ariburnu. Maya has exemplified that everything is possible with dedication, emphasizing the profound impact of small actions on making significant changes. Our primary goal is to promote diversity, inclusion, gender equality, alleviate poverty, and broaden educational opportunities.

## 2023 in Summary
This year we focused on establishing ties and connections within the Ugandan community. The Maya Ariburnu Foundation has created a solid partnership with a Ugandan NGO, Amani Charity Ministries. This partnership has been formed on our joint efforts, values and goals. With the collaboration between both charities we have had an amazing first year supporting and building a safe community for children most in need. We have provided meals, education and most importantly a safe, loving family environment.
## A Clean Child-Friendly space
In 2023, we expanded safe and clean family homes by granting rental accommodations, providing ample play areas and comfortable beds for over 20 children. This initiative eliminated concerns about dusty grounds, creating an environment conducive to joyful play and restful sleep.
## Community Uplifting
To reverse centuries of inequalities, impoverished communities need access to integrated social services programs focused on prevention. We have unified various educational training providers into a seamless ecosystem, elevating teams to uplift communities.
## Transportation
The Maya Ariburnu Foundation approved a grant for means of transportation to our partner Amani Charity Ministries. Nearly 45 children entrusted under their care received timely transportation to kindergarten, primary, and secondary schools. This not only ensured punctuality but also eased the logistical challenges of school attendance.
## Access to Education
We understand that a comprehensive curriculum is vital, particularly for communities in great need, spanning all age groups. Our commitment is to equip children and adults alike with the tools to explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Recognizing the value of early engagement, we prioritize exposing individuals to exciting new possibilities, ensuring they are well-prepared to compete in the modern world.
Our commitment to education in 2023 extended beyond providing supplies and uniforms. Generous funding enabled us to furnish modern tablets and computers for Primary and Secondary school children as well as grant numerous children in the community free school places, enhancing their learning experience.

## The UCM Scholarship
Celebrating academic excellence, we congratulate Divine Seruwagi, our first university student, who scored a first grade in 2023. Divine earned a scholarship to UCM University in the United States, a remarkable achievement.
## Medical and Treatment
In 2023, three of our patients—Samson, Loy, and Annette—underwent successful surgeries. Loy, a cancer survivor, is not only alive but thriving and teaching once again. Optical and dental care, along with deworming for toddlers, were provided, ensuring the overall well-being of those under our care.
## Feeding Programs
We committed to providing nourishing meals. This initiative not only saved lives but also brought about positive changes in entire communities, emphasizing the importance of access to simple necessities like rice and beans.
## Book Supply
Acknowledging the challenge of accessing books in poor communities, Maya’s contribution of 50 books facilitated the establishment of a home book library. This initiative aimed to promote reading, distributing books to children and families in the neighboring community.
## Empowering Girls and Women
The Maya Ariburnu Foundation is committed to empowering women and girls, fostering leadership in under served communities, particularly in Uganda. Our focus includes ensuring girls' access to education and health, allowing them to make independent choices and become community leaders. The Girls Project, rooted in Maya's vision, exists to empower and guide every girl and woman, providing comprehensive support for their aspirations.
In 2023, our girls' program prioritized empowering girls through lessons on feminine hygiene, leading to 21 dropouts returning to school. Additionally, teen mothers received essential packages, including diapers and food, with two receiving rent support, marking a significant milestone.
## Clean Water
Ensuring access to clean water in 2023 significantly reduced illnesses caused by dirty water for children. This initiative has been instrumental in promoting overall health and well-being.

## Financial Review
## Income and expenditure
In the year ended 31 December 2023 our income was £99,300 (2022: £0). All income was received as private donations. Expenditure was £88,999, the majority of this being grant payments to our local NGO partner Amani Charity Ministries (£83,327), £5,341 for travel costs associated with project design, implementation and monitoring, and £231 in bank charges.
## Financial position at year end
At the year-end, current assets stood at £10,401.
## Related party transactions
Donations totalling £99,300 were received from the Trustees. There were no other related party transactions to disclose.
## Risk management objectives and policies
The trustees have overall responsibility for ensuring that The Maya Ariburnu Foundation has an appropriate system of controls to identify financial and other risks and to take appropriate measures to manage them.
## Structure, governance, and management
## Constitution
The Maya Ariburnu Foundation (TMAF) was registered as a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) in England & Wales on 22 December 2020. It is registered at the Charities Commission for England and Wales.
## Methods of appointment or election of Trustees
The management of the Charity is the responsibility of the Trustees. The first trustees were appointed by the constitution. The minimum number of trustees is three and the maximum is seven. The founding Trustees, Maya Ariburnu and Dalinc Ariburnu are appointed for their lifetime.
Trustees are selected with due regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of TMAF and once appointed are required to:
- Declare the nature and extent of any interest, direct or indirect, which he or she has in a proposed transaction or arrangement with TMAF or in any transaction or arrangement entered into by TMAF which has not previously been declared; and
- Absent themselves from any discussions of the charity trustees in which it is possible that a conflict of interest will arise between his or her duty to act solely in the interests of TMAF and any personal interest including but not limited to any financial interest). A charity trustee absenting themselves from any discussions accordingly does not vote nor is counted as part of the quorum in any decision of the charity trustees on the matter.
## Organisational structure and decision-making policies
TMAF’s Board of Trustees meet between six and eight times a year and together with the Chair, are responsible for the strategic direction and policy of the CIO.
We greatly value the substantial donation of time and expertise by members of our board above and beyond their duties as trustees, and by our volunteers who have supported various functions within TMAF.
## Policies adopted for the induction and training of Trustees
On appointment, new trustees are provided with a current version of TMAF’s constitution, a copy of the Charity Commission’s trustee guidance, ‘The Essential Trustee’ and the latest set of accounts. They are also briefed on their legal obligations under charity law, the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit, the content of the constitution, the Charity's decision-making processes, strategic goals, method of operation and financial activities and status. Trustees are encouraged to visit TMAF’s projects (self-funded) in order to understand our beneficiary communities and work. These visits are part of a monitoring and evaluation activity or to accompany high value donors.
## Pay policy for key management personnel
Maya Ariburnu, Dalinc Ariburnu and Edward Akrout work on a voluntary basis and receive no pay.
## Reserves policy
At this early start up stage the Trustees have adopted a Zero level reserve policy. It was agreed to adopt such policy as funds are not generally raised in advance of need and therefore a reserve is not needed to be held. The Reserves policy will be actively reviewed as the Charity grows.
## Investment policy
Surplus funds will be retained in a bank deposit account at the best rate possible whilst retaining instant access to the deposits as required.
## Plans for future periods
The Maya Ariburnu Foundation will continue to partner with Amani Charity Ministries on joint projects aligned to our overall goal of promoting diversity, inclusion, gender equality, alleviating poverty, and broadening educational opportunities.
## Independent examiner’s report to the Trustees of The Maya Ariburnu Foundation
I report to the trustees on the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2023 that are set out on the attached pages.
## Respective responsibilities of the Trustee’s and the examiner
As the charity trustees of the Trust, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## Independent examiner’s statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
- accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Act or
- the accounts do not accord with the accounting records
- The accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of The Act
- There is further information needed for a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
