The Trustees present their annual report together with the financial statements of the Charity for the year ended 31 December 2022.

Public Benefit

The trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission. The trustees consider that as The Maya Ariburnu Foundations activities are focused in extreme poverty in Uganda, that the activities of the CIO provide significant public benefit.

This year we focused on establishing the charity. Assessing the need and developing our plans for the future, no funds were raised or spent in the period.

About us and our future plans

The Maya Ariburnu Foundation aims to change the future of Uganda and we believe that starts with the children. Over 66% of Ugandan’s live in inadequate housing, and there is currently a deficit of 1.6 million housing units (Habitat, 2019). In 2018, 173,000 people were displaced from their homes due to natural disasters and violence. We plan to start this project in the capital city, Kampala. Our objective is to build an orphanage known as the community centre. The community centre will provide a safe haven for the orphans of Kampala. The community centre will accommodate the small orphanages we have been helping thus far as well as homeless children and any suffering children in the community who need to be in a safer and more secure environment. The Community centre will provide the fundamentals which are not readily available, shelter, nutritious food, washing facilities, safety and security. The community Centre will provide sleeping quarters, a separate quarter for boys and girls. Food, three meals a day with up to two rounds of refills for each child and the staff / volunteers. The food will be nutritious and target every food group and there will be snack time twice a day. The TV room will combine with a room for playing games and having fun. Outside there will be basketball nets and football nets, a parking area, swimming pool. The centre will be equipped with a nurse’s station for care and first aid. We ultimately want the children to feel as if they have a big, happy family that can provide everything a “regular” family would: emotional support, security, and unconditional love.

As well as providing a safe haven we strive to teach children life skills. We will support children in life aspects and basic knowledge as well encourage and provide transport and supplies to the school which is a short distance away. The older boys and girls will help to watch over and mentor the younger kids, in return they will earn a small amount of pocket money: this teaches them the responsibility that comes with handling money for the future. The orphanage grounds will also be equipped with a farm so children can learn skills that might be beneficiary when they look for jobs. The library will offer a quiet space where there will be computers and supplies for homework and studying. We want to foster a system in which every student has a chance to find a passion and explore it, to teach students how to think, not what to think by keeping an open mind and having orderly group discussions to process various opinions and have healthy debates that stimulate minds. Essentially, we want these kids to thrive in their ability to think critically and rationalize, but most importantly, learn to do so in an objective way: be able to recognize bias in themselves and in other sources. Instead of leaving school with knowledge we want to encourage them to be lifelong learners striving in intellect, creativity, philanthropy, curiosity, and character. We will hold strong values, most important is freedom from any and all kinds of discrimination; followed by another core pillar of being kind, and having zero tolerance for bullying, fighting verbally and/or physically, or making others feel excluded. We aim to be a family at the orphanage so it is crucial that we treat each other like family: brothers and sisters and moms and dads. This will be the backbone of the “safe, happy family” environment we are striving for. Our end goal is for this to be a safe space for any child.

The optimal ask would be for individuals to commit to continuous support and patronage to The Maya Ariburnu Foundation.

There is a plan to recruit a board of trustees, currently we have three trustees already registered and committed to oversee the appropriate, safe and effective direction of the charity to include income generation activities, finance, communications and marketing and importantly to provide the required safeguard. All respective employees will have a full DBS, safeguarding training and will be signed off as competent by a registered professional.

Aim

The aim of The Maya Ariburnu Foundation is to provide a safe haven in form of an orphanage for children and young people of the city of Kampala.

Objectives

  1. To deliver flexible services that meet the needs of each child, young person. These will range from shelter, food, medical assistance, life skills, emotional and clinical support.

  2. To work in partnership with local, regional and national organisations from statutory, voluntary, private and informal sectors, committed to identifying gaps in service provision and working together to meet the need.

Service Need: Evidence

At least 12.3 % of children in Uganda are orphans. 420,000 of these orphans have lost only a mother and 1,330,000 a father. However, 402,500 of these are total orphans, having lost both parents, and these are the more likely to end up in orphanages.

Over the past three decades, the number of children in orphanages in Uganda has increased from approximately 1,000 in the 1990s to more than 50,000 today.

Collaboration

Out of the approximately 600 orphanages in Uganda, only 35 are fully registered under the ministry of Gender, Labour and social development. Numerous orphanages in Uganda have been shut down due to not following the correct policies and guidance. We will uphold strict vetting to ensure that all social workers are fully qualified, and their references are to the highest standard and fully investigated. social worker because these have been trained on how to handle children. We will also ensure that a qualified registered nurse is on site at all times. What's more, we will ensure that there will be ample staff. For the babies aged one day to five years, there will be a social worker for every five of them. For those aged 5 to 18 years, there will be a social worker for every eight children. We will work closely with the Ugandan Ministry of Gender, Labour and social development to ensure that our facilities are in line and above with all requirements and regulations.

Education

We will have the resources to enable our facility to help educate the children with life skills.

Space and sleeping facilities

We will ensure that we have ample sleeping space. Every child will have its own “personal space” in the form of a bunk bed and locker. Our facility will also include guest rooms which will allow the relatives to visit, keeping in line with national policies to do with orphans and vulnerable children.
