Daisy Chain Café Annual report 2024-2025
The Daisy Chain Café has been running for seven years, four of which has been as a registered charity. The café continues to serve people with dementia in the local community and their supporters. The cafe is run on a wholly volunteer basis and is well regarded within the local community as an asset
Attendance at the café is free and numbers vary throughout the year, ranging from 16-20 people, the highest attendance being in the winter months. A new seating layout has been instigated at the café to help overcome the space restrictions and has been working well. A few supporters who have recently lost a partner continue to attend the café as they find the continuing support and friendship an asset in their new circumstances. Occasionally a person with dementia attends without a supporter, where they are well enough to do so.
Supporters often report difficulties accessing information regarding support agencies, benefits and care services. We offer them signposting information and monthly visiting services of a CAB outreach worker to assist in these matters.
Attendees and supporters regularly give us very positive feedback about their experience of the café. They enjoy the friendship, entertainment and meeting others who can offer advice based on their own experience.
We are fortunate to have a range of visiting entertainers, who offer their services on a voluntary basis. These include various types of musical performances, seated exercises and visits from our two PAT dogs. We are extremely grateful to all of them for their services.
Our volunteer base, excluding Trustees, is a steady at around 30. We are pleased that we have such a committed, hardworking team, without whom we could not function. The volunteers report that they gain great satisfaction from their contact with the attendees and supporters. Six of these volunteers, known as session leaders, are responsible for the smooth running of the weekly cafe sessions. They meet every 6 weeks to plan the weekly sessions and to review and instigate improvements to the weekly café sessions. They also discuss any additional activities or outings when funds allow.

During the last year the charity received a number of generous donations, which was partly used to fund some additional events. These included a tea dance, a fish supper lunch, a visit to a Xmas pantomime, a trip to Milestones Museum and a Christmas party. We purchased a gazebo featuring the Daisy Chain Café logo to provide shade outside the café during the summer months and for attending fetes. We also bought a couple of specialist games and a microphone to extend the activities on offer. Over the last year the major donations came from the Yateley Town Mayors Charity Fund, Frogmore Grove Neighbours Group, Charities Aid Foundation, John Lewis, Yateley Lions, Yateley Ladies Social Club, Endless Flooring and Yateley Walking Football Group. The café continues to run a weekly raffle, which also helps contribute to the cost of running the cafe.
Our quarterly newsletter, which is sent to attendees and volunteers, continues to be a success and is a great source of information and light entertainment.
In July 2024 we held our first post-Covid face-to-face Annual meeting. Attendees included volunteers, donators, representatives from the local council as well as other supporters. Here we explained a bit about the history of the charity, the main differences to the way we operate as a registered charity, the key roles within the charity, our future plans and a supporter talked about their experience of attending the café.
The Trustees continue to meet quarterly to review the performance of the café and make decisions about the future running of it. This covers aspects such as governance, financial controls, data protection and safeguarding. The charity’s financial position remains sound with sufficient reserves to ensure the café continues to operate in the medium term.
