## **Daisy Chain café Annual report 2023-2024**
Daisy Chain Café completed its sixth year in 2023, three years as a registered charity. The café is evolving, still maintaining its original aims and serving the local community and those with dementia and their supporters and run on a wholly volunteer basis.
The attendance is a steady 16-20 people with dementia and their supporters. We do not charge for attendance but offer a weekly raffle draw. Some of the supporters who have recently lost a partner continue to attend as they find the continuing support and friendship an asset in their new circumstances. We also occasionally support someone with dementia who attends without a supporter. Where they are still able to live unaided at home by themselves, we are happy to welcome their attendance and keep them in touch with the community in which they live. Attendance appears to vary throughout the year being higher in the winter months, perhaps understandably, but we have definitely seen an increase in numbers overall this year. An investigation of other possible local hall accommodation was undertaken but nothing was found to match our requirements.
The supporters often report difficulties accessing information regarding support agencies, benefit availabilities and care services. We offer them signposting information and most recently have acquired the monthly visiting services of a CAB outreach worker to assist in these matters.
Our attendees and their supporters regularly give us very positive feedback about their experience of the café. They enjoy the friendship, the entertainment and meeting with others who can sometimes pass on their hands on experience to help a fellow supporter.
Those who provide our visiting entertainments also do so on a voluntary basis. We thank them profusely for their time and high-quality musical renditions, seated exercise sessions and to our two PAT dog owners and Nala and William (the dogs) for coming along to share their patient attentions with us.
Our volunteer base is a steady 30 or so. We are so pleased that we have such a committed, hardworking team without whom we could not function. Six of these volunteers take on the extra responsibilities of managing the smooth running of our Monday afternoon sessions as

well as planning and organising the entertainment for the afternoon sessions and the extra features on other occasions that we fund from time to time. These session leaders meet 6 weekly and regularly review and instigate improvements needed to the weekly café sessions. During the last year additionally funded events for the attendees have included the Coronation party, a Christmas party, a Tea party at a garden centre, attendance at the pantomime at South Hill Park and attendance at the Beauty and the Beast production also at South Hill Park.
Funding these special activities is supported by donations. This year major donations have been very gratefully received from the Fit Club in Blackwater and promised from the Yateley Town Mayors charity fund. A small fundraising activity was undertaken by our volunteers at a local run event. We also run a weekly raffle at the café.
A feedback survey from our volunteers during the year indicated an improvement in communications would be appreciated and we organised a volunteers get together evening. A newsletter has also been instigated on a regular basis for distribution to both volunteers and attendees and has been very well received.
Changes to our management structure have been undertaken this year. We judged that our Steering group, who had successfully steered us through to the registration as a charity, the Covid years and the set up and operation of our Trustee board was a duplication of effort so it was disbanded. High level governance, financial controls, data protection and safeguarding responsibilities were taken on by the Trustees who meet 3 monthly. Our financial position remains sound with sufficient reserves to ensure the café continues in the medium term. We are pleased to have welcomed our fourth Trustee during this year. An ongoing organizational development plan is in place to strengthen our management purposes and procedures.
It can be seen looking back over the events and changes that have been made and reported here over the last year that considerable and positive developments have been accomplished. The volunteers gain great satisfaction from their contact with the attendees and supporters and the café is well regarded within the local community as an asset.
