Daisy Chain café Annual report 2022-2023
Daisy Chain Café is a small local independent charity providing social interaction opportunities to those with dementia and or memory loss, their supporters and families in Yateley, Hampshire and the surrounding areas.
We have been in existence since 2017 and registered as a charity in 2020. We have a management committee who advise and oversee the workings of the charity, 3 Trustees who have responsibility for the governance and finances and a group of sessions leaders who manage the weekly meetings and events. Both the session leaders and Trustees provide updates to the management committee, who meet approximately every 2 months. The charity is run entirely by 30 volunteers on a rota basis so that 11 are in attendance at each weekly café session.
The café runs on a Monday afternoon every week, except for Bank Holidays, and meets in a local council run hall. Attendance is free and refreshments and entertainment is provided. This is sometimes “homegrown” using dementia friendly games, quizzes and activities and we have volunteer entertainers who attend regularly to provide musical, demonstration and movement activities. We also organise special parties, days out and functions in addition to the weekly meetings.

A day out to Milestones, a local living history museum
A special afternoon tea
A party to mark Halloween and Christmas
During the year our volunteers came together for a couple of social activities and team working. Volunteers have attended first aid training and new volunteers have all been provided with an initial half day training before they volunteer with us. Trustees have benefitted from NCVO (National Council for Voluntary Organisations) training and as a result of this we became members of the NCVO. NCVO tools have been used to develop a governance development plan. This has resulted in the reviewing and setting up of policies and procedures to strengthen our management. At the beginning of the year we donated, with the help of a Hampshire County Council grant, a defibrillator to Yateley Town Council for erection at the hall where we meet. This can be used by those who use the hall and local residents.
Throughout Covid we maintained hygiene, distancing and ventilation advice but these were eased at the beginning of the year. We have had no reports of the spread of Covid likely from the attendance at the café.
In October the Café Coordinator gave notice of her withdrawal from this role though she remained as Chairperson and Trustee. This has resulted in the planning for one of the existing session leaders to take on the role, aided by another session leader. The plans are developing and a new regular newsletter to attendees is being set up.
In the New Year our average attendance increased from 13 to 16 – 19 and we investigated, reluctantly, alternative local meeting places. None were found to ideal so we instigated a new seating style to accommodate the extra people. This number reduced to a steady 16 and we found the new seating arrangements meant a safe and comfortable atmosphere.
Our financial position is sound and we have taken advantage of improving interest rates on our savings. We have a policy of retaining a sum of money to ensure the café will continue to run in the medium term in the event of a reduction in our income streams. We take advantage of gift aid on donations where we can.
We would like to express our grateful thanks to our volunteers, those who have donated to the charity and those organisations and individuals who have supported us, without whom we could not function.
