Since we began in 2018 we have: conducted a mammalian species assemblage in Outamba using camera traps and community knowledge, conducted conservation education programmes and engaged in discussions with wildlife with over 3,000 community members in and around OKNP, started a free alternative-income training scheme for adults in our own building in Kortor, and provided employment opportunities in wildlife research and monitoring to local people in Tambakkha Chiefdom.
Our goal is to increase the population densities of keystone species and preservation of natural environments in Sierra Leone driven by locally led initiatives that simultaneously sustain and improve local community’s quality of life.

Our wildlife research, conservation, and community engagement activities are funded by The Dallas Zoo. This organisation is focused on supporting projects which aide in the protection of African Forest Elephants. The main activities of the charity operations occur in the habitat of the last strong-hold of elephants in the country of Sierra Leone, with an estimated >120 remaining. 42 adults were provided with free alternative income training that allows people to pursue employment, rather than reliance on subsistence farming. These cash income opportunities also provide alternatives to the only other cash-paying work in the area, which is illegal extractive industries (ie mining and logging). We also published a paper which expanded the known range of the world’s fastest primate, the patas monkey. As well as lead British co-authors, the paper also included multiple Sierra Leonean co-authors where this was their first scientific paper publication. We have maintained relationships with the communities in and around the Outamba Kilimi National Park in Sierra Leone which has greatly aided in the expansion of our work. Conservation activities historically butted heads with local people, whereas we aim to work ‘hand-in-hand’ to help people accomplish their goals in an environmentally responsible way. We have also worked experimenting with traditionally woven Susu beehives in an effort to reduce human-elephant conflict on farms. We also continued to participate in the Sierra Leone National Science Festival to bring our work and the joy of Sierra Leone’s wildlife to others outside the immediate area of the national park.
