## **INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON COUPLE AND FAMILY ORGANISATIONS Charitable Incorporated Organisation** **UK registered charity no.** 1192742 ## **2021 ANNUAL REPORT** ## _**BACKGROUND INFORMATION**_ _The ICCFR CIO has been a registered charity in the UK since December 2020. It was founded on the basis of the ICCFR Trust, a registered UK charity since 2003._ _The Objects of the CIO are described in its Constitution:_ - _To advance the education of the public in the social sciences and in particular in matters concerning family and interpersonal relationships. And_ - _To achieve such other objects which are charitable within the laws of England and Wales as may be determined by the Trustees._ _The Trustees must use the income and may use the capital of the CIO in promoting the Objects._ _The ICCFR CIO’s Trustees are required to hold three Meetings per year either electronically or in person; Trustees are principally appointed for a 4-year term of office, although it was deemed advisable to stagger the terms of office of the first Trustees:_ - _Douglas Alexiou (UK) -Chair_ - _Anne Berger (USA)_ - _Claire Barnes (USA)_ - _John Chambers OBE (UK)_ - _Gerlind Richards MBE (UK) – Vice-Chair_ - _Philip Richards (UK) - Treasurer_ - _Anita Rodarte (USA)_ - _Suzie S Thorn Esq (USA)_ _ICCFR CIO is supported by four Patrons:_ _Professor Marie-Claire Foblets (Belgium), Sir Mathew Thorpe (UK), Suzie S Thorn Esq (USA), Professor Sabine Walpers (Germany)._ ## **ANNUAL REVIEW FOR 2021** ## ❖ **Trustees and Offices:** The CIO’s charity registration was achieved in December 2020, on the basis of its predecessor, the ICCFR Trust, given that present day requirements of any organisation hosting large international events necessitated this move towards a structure that provided more comprehensive protection for its Trustees and its assets. The five previous Trustees were joined by the Hon. Treasurer and two previous Board Members of ICCFR, with the ultimate aim that the new CIO is to combine and replace the ICCFR Trust and the ICCFR. It is hoped that some of the remaining Board Members and officers of ICCFR will join as Trustees, in due course. It was decided that the first year of office for all Trustees should incorporate 13 months, so that the Trustees’ terms of office should coincide with the AGM in January each year. In 2021, due to the continued threat of the Covid-19 pandemic which precluded in-person meetings, the CIO held its first statutory meetings in the form of Zoom meetings in January which merged with the ICCFR Trust’s AGM, and in July. The Trustees moreover met regularly in the more informal context of the ICCFR Group Meetings also held by Zoom. Charity no: 1192742 1 ## ❖ **Achievement of Objectives and Donations:** In 2021, the annual ICCFR conference on “Couple and Family Relationships in Times of Crises” had to be converted to a hybrid event, due to the continued covid pandemic. This event – scheduled for November – was planned in collaboration with the Massachusetts chapter of the American Association of Matrimonial Lawyers AAML as local hosts. AAML was able to host the Opening Session in Boston which was attended by Trustees Anne Berger and Anita Rodarte as representatives of the ICCFR. This event was followed by a series of three Webinars hosted by Trustee Claire Barnes and two AAML representatives respectively. Substantial grants to the CIO from the Government of Flanders and from the Government of Germany (now through the German national organisation AGF) were received in the course of the year. The Trustees are particularly obliged to Ms Karine Moykens (Flanders) and to Mr. Sven Iversen (Germany) who were instrumental in procuring these grants which were awarded to aid its educative objectives by supporting the ICCFR in its work in general, representing therefore designated funding. ICCFR received two distinct grants by the Suzie S Thorn Family Foundation in 2021. The first one received early in the year, had been awarded previously with the purpose of supporting the Trust’s educative work in sponsoring selected candidates to take part in ICCFR events, as well as retrospectively covering some of the general sponsorship that was required by the 2020 Webinars; the second one designated to underpin the new connection between ICCFR and the AAML with a view to a continued collaboration. The Trustees are indebted to Suzie S Thorn without whose support this contribution would not be received. ## ❖ **Future Plans:** In the course of the year, ICCFR proceeded with its group meetings (all by electronic means). Identification of the purposes and values and fine-tuning its mission statement led to developing plans for relevant content of ICCFR activities, for varying and introducing new elements to the format of ICCFR events and for updating and improving communications. There was a consensus that in-person conferences are an essential element of ICCFR’s work and identity. Consolidating existing connections as well as forging new links will be a priority in the coming year. All Trustees will be involved in this, in collaboration with the members of the ICCFR Group. Long-term deliberations focus on building on the extensive network of individuals and organisations interested in the International Commission on Couple and Family Relations and engaging their active support and assistance. Fund-raising aims and purposes for the long term were identified: - To allow sponsorship for ICCFR to mount a conference in a country where no local support can be expected; - To provide funding for people who are disadvantaged, especially young people wishing to benefit/learn from an ICCFR conference; - To offer conference scholarships for younger post-graduates or researchers in one of the focal areas of the ICCFR’s work - To promote original research pertaining to a particular conference topic (such as the joint project with Queen’s University Belfast in the past). Financial position** At the end of 2021 the CIO held $24,362 in the CIO’s US bank account, £37,998 in the Barclays Community Account and £3,174 in the CIO’s paypal account. This amounts to the equivalent of £59,229 (exchange rate calculated at $1=£0.741). Over 2021 to end of December the ICCFR CIO received a total of £10,728 in donations and grants. An additional amount of £32,498 was donated from the ICCFR Commission as it amalgamated with the ICCFR Trust which also transferred its funds of £21,625 to form the ICCFR CIO. The ICCFR CIO provided £3,086 for the ICCFR CIO’s administration, and £1,034 towards the costs of the unfortunately cancelled 2021 conference, together with £1,482 contributed to the funding of the joint AAML/ICCFR conference in Boston. ## **2. Grants received and grants given** We are extremely grateful for the continuing support of both the Flemish and German Governments, contributing £7,408 towards the running costs of the ICCFR CIO. We are also very appreciative to the SS Thorn Family Foundation for their grant of £3,319 made during 2021. ## **3.
