This report is presented in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice, “Accounting and Reporting by Charities” (SORP), issued in March 2005. The Charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) governed according to the Constitution dated 28 November 2020. . ## **Statement of Trustees’ responsibilities** The Charities Act 2011 requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period. The trustees are responsible for keeping sufficient accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. ## **Organisation** The Trustees are: - Miss Anne WANKIIRI (chair) - Mr David KINUTHIA (finance) - Mr Pedro DUARTE - Mr Richard DOBSON - Mr Muchineripi Rwizi The Members of the CIO are individuals, corporate bodies, or representatives of Organisations that are not incorporated, who undertake to act in good faith to further the purposes of the CIO. The affairs of the CIO are managed by the Charity Trustees, of which there must be at least three. Decisions are made by simple majority of votes at a meeting of Trustees or by resolution made in writing or in electronic form and agreed by all Trustees. Induction of Trustees is overseen by the Chair. ## **Objectives and activities** “The prevention or relief of poverty in Northampton by providing African food parcels, non-food essentials such as personal and household essentials, clothing and other items and services to individuals in need and/or charities, or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty. Page **3** of **14** United African Association Registered Charity No. 1192725 Trustees Report & Accounts for the year ended: 4 July 2022 In exercising their duty, the Charity Trustees have reviewed that all of their activities have due regard to public benefit guidance published by the Commission. ## **Activities, Achievements and Performance - for the year ending 4th July 2022** - Food parcel project - Online health sessions - facilitated by NHS medical professionals on health conditions prevalent in the African community e.g.high blood pressure, fibroids, heart disease and diabetes - Online immigration sessions - immigration advice from registered lawyers - Self defence sessions for females teens and adults - Fishing sessions for beginners - IT sessions for beginners and improvers - Ladies swimming sessions - Involvement in Poverty in Northampton report - Food safety training course - Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering - Community Champions - promoting covid safety, wellbeing programmes and 1-2-1 support - Community Outreach - Befriending services - African drumming and dance - Wellbeing events incorporating social activities, family fun events, health checks, information, refreshments, music - Membership of the Equalities Enabler Group (MHLDA ICS Collaborative) - Immigration Certificate of Sponsorship - Recruitment of 2 part time staff to manage increased demand for support services ## **Foodbank** The African foodbank project regularly supplies food parcels to approximately 100 households in Northampton and provided food parcels to over 1500 people during the year. Topics covered included diabetes, GP registration, HIV, Fibroids, Sickle Cell, High Blood Pressure, Mental Health & Covid and Weight Management and Obesity. As well as information through presentation slides there was a question and answer section as well as information for further assistance. ## **Online Immigration Sessions** 15 interactive zoom sessions were held with 2 registered immigration lawyers answering questions to a range of immigration related matters. Immigration issues in particular those relating to No Recourse to Public Funds remains one of the most problematic area for our service users. ## **Self Defence Sessions** In partnership with Northamptonshire Sports and the frank Bruno we ran some self defence sessions for women and teenage girls. Page **6** of **14** United African Association Registered Charity No. 1192725 Trustees Report & Accounts for the year ended: 4 July 2022 ## **Fishing Sessions for beginners** The United African Association (UAA) worked with the Northampton Nene Angling Club (NNAC) to enable young people aged 8-16 to engage in fishing. NNAC Coaching team provided sessions for culturally diverse communities,disabled people and people with long-term health conditions. They were able to form two teams who had training sessions to enable them to get involved in the Commonwealth fishing event in Birmingham in September 2022 Page **7** of **14** United African Association Registered Charity No. 1192725 Trustees Report & Accounts for the year ended: 4 July 2022 ## **IT Sessions for beginners and improvers** Through a grant from the National Lottery we purchased 8 computers and printers as well as tutor costs for 48 2 hour sessions for beginner and improvers of IT. Topics covered included MS Word, MS Excel, MSPowerPoint, Internet Safety, File Management and Social Media. Page **8** of **14** United African Association Registered Charity No. 1192725 Trustees Report & Accounts for the year ended: 4 July 2022 ## **Ladies Swimming** Over the year over 80 ladies came to the ladies swimming sessions,with the majority being total beginners. The project which was supposed to run for 12 weeks has been ongoing since June 2021 with new members joining on an ongoing basis. ## **Involvement in the Poverty in Northampton Report** The United African Association alongside Northampton Hope Centre highlighted "super poverty" amongst mostly BAME and ethnic minority communities in Northampton town. The Poverty in Northampton report may be found here ## **Food Safety Training Course** 8 participants undertook the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering course provided by North Northamptonshire Council’s Adult Learning Dept. The aim was to enable long term unemployed people to set up their own catering businesses. Page **9** of **14** United African Association Registered Charity No. 1192725 Trustees Report & Accounts for the year ended: 4 July 2022 ## **Community Champions Programme** Working alongside Support Northamptonshire, United African Association was involved in a community champions project promoting covid safety, wellbeing programmes including health checks, referrals to relevant health services, befriending services,physical exercises, and 1-2-1 support. Over 1000 calls were received about covid and wellbeing, 1-2-1 support provided to over 1400 people, 34 wellbeing sessions held with over 700 participants. Covid safety messages reach over 45000 people. Assistance with getting over 350 people vaccinated. ## **Community Outreach** We continued developing our community outreach programme with Citizens Advice Bureau who offered welfare support to over 200 people and also we referred over 1000 people in need to Citizens Advice for the issuance of Household Support Fund Vouchers. We aim to break social isolation, keep an eye on people's wellbeing and mental health. We want to make them feel like they are not forgotten. We befriend people face to face as well. Usually inviting people to have lunch with us on Saturdays, after FooD Bank. We also invite and find transportation for people who want to come to our wellbeing events. We also get referrals from social services and other organisations. As well as regular sessions we were invited to perform at various community events including Diwali Festival, Northampton Carnival, Northampton Music Festival, Knife Angel event and the Jubilee Parade. The idea is to bring people together, promote positive relationships and give people a sense of community and belonging. At these events we have music, food, aromatherapy, henna painting, colouring, football, etc. ## **Membership of the Equalities Enabler Group (MHLDA ICS Collaborative)** We work collaboratively with our local county partners to systematically address health inequalities within and across pathways. Page **13** of **14** United African Association Registered Charity No. 1192725 Trustees Report & Accounts for the year ended: 4 July 2022 ## **Immigration Certificate of Sponsorship** We are now able to recruit charity workers from outside of the United Kingdom, when it’s relevant and necessary ## **Staff Recruitment** Funding from the National Lottery enabled us to recruit 2 part time staff to assist with our support to the community, dealing with a variety of issues including homelessness, food and fuel poverty, domestic abuse, benefits issues, immigration, modern slavery and exploitation, mental health, physical health and more. ## **Financial review** We raised £44825.78 during the year. This was from grants and donations. The majority of our income was spend on food items for the foodbank project. ## **Plans for FY 2022/23** - Increase in food deliveries as a result of cost of living crisis - Issuing of Household Support Fund vouchers for people in need - Further fundraising efforts for the foodbank and for additional staff salaries due to increased demand - Assisting in developing an immigration support programme in partnership with West Northants Council and other partners - Musical workshops, men's mental health project and football sessions for young people in partnership with Northants Police and Crime Commissioner as part of the Make Northamptonshire Safer project - Mental health programme in partnership with Northamptonshire Health Foundation Trust(NHFT) - ● Healthcare training programme - Grow, Cook, Eat project - providing opportunities for local ‘champions’ to access support for growing, cooking and eating healthy foods Expansion of our African drumming activities Anne Wankiiri Chair of Trustees Jan 2023 ## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** An independent auditor examined the charity’s accounts.
