Introduction
The Sudanese Community Association in Newcastle and Surrounding Areas (SCANS) remains committed to fostering cultural connections, supporting community members, and addressing humanitarian needs. The year 2024 was marked by a series of impactful programmes and activities that served both local and global communities.
This report highlights the key events and initiatives undertaken during the year.
Activities and Programmes
1. Ramadan (Fasting Month):
- Ramadan Iftars (March 2024):
Weekly community iftar gatherings featuring group prayers, shared dinners, and engaging activities such as children’s art sessions, competitions, and writing contests.
2. Eid al-Fitr Celebrations:
• Open Day for Sudanese Families (April 2024):
A vibrant celebration that included traditional food, children’s activities such as a bouncy castle and balloons, and a youth baking contest.
3. Family BBQ Day:
- Summer BBQ Event (July 21, 2024):
A joyful summer gathering with delicious food, fun activities for families and children, and youth football games to promote health and teamwork.
4. Community Events
In collaboration with the Arabic School , SCANS organized a Family Day at the end of the school term. The event aimed to strengthen family bonds and encourage community participation. Highlights included:

Conclusion
The 2024 term showcased SCANS’ dedication to community welfare, cultural preservation, and international solidarity. Unfortunately, several planned activities were cancelled due to the outbreak of conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
Despite these challenges, SCANS remained steadfast in its commitment to supporting the Sudanese community in Newcastle and beyond.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and partners who contributed to the success of these initiatives. Together, we continue to make a meaningful impact.
