This was to develop art installations for Ripon Cathedral to celebrate the 1,350-year anniversary of the building of the cathedral in AD672 by St Wilfrid, to be staged in 2022. Art in the Churches (AitC) had been approached by Ripon Cathedral in 2019 following the success of the 2019 AitC project called ‘Sculpt’, which consisted of art installations in seven churches to the north of Ripon. A committee was assembled with representatives from the Dean and Chapter, the marketing, operating and development departments of the cathedral as well as lay members with art expertise and the Trustees of AitC. The project plan was prepared by Chris Baily (Chair of AitC) with representation from the committee, putting forward proposals for five major art installations. Three temporary installations inside the cathedral and three permanent installations outside, and set in public spaces within Ripon, which included the relocation of one of the artworks previously displayed inside the cathedral. The idea for permanent public sculptures followed a call for such in the approved Ripon City Plan as developed by Harrogate Borough Council. This proposal was shared widely with Ripon interest groups, where it was widely supported. The artists who were selected and presented proposals were: - - Dallas Collins, Sculptor - Large Jesmonite (resin) sculpture, a montage of the architecture of Rome located in the nave and then on a roundabout on the Ripon bypass. - Barbara Myers, Sculptor - Large bronze sculpture, outlines of St Wilfrid, a crozier and a monk located in the Market Place. - Sara Shamma, Painter - Imagined portraits of Wilfrid and people in his world located in a suspended dome in the crossing tower. - Hans Blank, Sculptor - Anglo Saxon boat carrying St Willibrord (prodigy of Wilfrid) with monks to Fresia located outside the West End of the cathedral. - Projection Collective, Projection video art - Projection depicting the colour of Wilfrid’s life located in the main chamber of the crypt. - • Jack Chesterman, Painter - A triptych of paintings representing the life and sainthood of Wilfrid. Located in the crypt. - • Paul Baily, Composer - An immersive sound installation reaching back through time to the cantors of the 7[th] century located in the crypt. - Olivier Mulligan, Poet - Poems to add colour to the artworks and lyrics to the music. Fundraising was commenced by AitC, approaching local and national grant providers. Covid presented some difficulties due to funds be directed toward recovery projects.
