The trustees present their report and accounts for the year ended 31 March 2024 for AFGHAN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION (ACA).

The following trustees held office during the whole of the period:

Objectives and activities

To advance the Islamic religion in Sheffield and the surrounding areas for the benefit of the public through the holding of prayer meetings, lectures, public celebration of religious festivals, producing and distributing literature on prayers for the Islamic Faith to enlighten others about the Islamic religion.

Also, by educating Muslims to become active role models in British Society whilst maintaining their Muslim identity. To teach them to be tolerant, caring and respectful to people from all backgrounds and beliefs to achieve a coherent community.

To further or benefit the residents of Sheffield and the neighborhood, without distinction of gender, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions. By associating together, they said residents and the local authorities, voluntary and other organizations in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents. In furtherance of these objectives but not otherwise, the trustees shall have power.

To establish or secure the establishment of a community/faith center and to maintain or manage or co-operate with any statutory authority in the maintenance. and management of such a center for activities promoted by the charity in furtherance of the above objectives.

The promotion of racial harmony for the public benefit by:

Refugee Council Grant

ACA raised £21700.45 through Refugee-Council (RC) to provide support, information and advice for all members and particularly for the Newly Arrived Refugees from Afghanistan. The job was advertised on ACA’s WhatsApp Group and a fair recruitment and selection was organized successfully. It was a 12 months project, ACA managed to extend the employment contract and keep its office premises to carry as normal through this funding. The office operated 2 days per week on a drop-in basis as well as home visits to meet the needs of the clients.

It has benefited the Newly Arrived Refugees, asylum-seekers and members of the community, massively and over 33 Newly Arrived Refugee families were supported.

As soon as they were housed in Sheffield they were visited, and a support plan and Action Plan was completed to assess their needs and provide support services accordingly.

ACA managed to organize 3 social events and awareness of the system of the country successfully in the community language (Pashto and Dari) and over 200 people (men, women and children attended to each event). At the end of the project ACA managed to save over £2357.8. This is because the majority of events were carried out by ACA’s trustees and volunteers. ACA made a thorough Financial and Progress report to the Refugee Council (RC) and urged them to allow us to spend the rest of the fund in continuing its valuable services to ACA’

Cost Of Living Grant

ACA managed to raise £5.000.00 on Nov 2023 through South Yorkshire, in relation to the Cost of Living, to provide awareness, information, support and advice, for those clients who are in desperate need of financial support in terms of energy, food, toiletries, groceries.

ACA provided a full awareness package by recording an informative videos in two languages (Pashto and Dari) as well in Writing in both community languages (Pashto and Dari), This has been posted on ACA’s Professional WhatsApp Group where it reach to over 190 members who are actively registered and can be benefited. ACA encourages them to either contact a member of staff or attend our Drop-In which takes place every Wednesdays and Thursdays.

ACA registered with Truswell successfully in referring clients who would like to apply for an E-voucher.

09.04.24 ACA organized Eid party for its members, over 200 people, men, women and children attended, Activities such as bouncy castle, music, tea, cookies, chocolate, lunch was provided, 2 separate halls were booked for men and women at PMC

07.06.2024: ACA managed to raise £19622.00 through the Lottery fund successfully to be able to continue with its service delivery, it’s a 2 years project in which the office will be open one day per week with a paid member of staff.

ACA organized a charity walk in July 2024 to raise funds for community building and also encourage everyone to keep fit, over 20 members participated and around £2,000.00 was raised which will help to pay some of its loan.

ACA organized a bereavement ceremony on 14th of July 2024 and announced it via ACA’s WhatsApp Group at Hatfield Community Centre for one of the well-respected individuals (Mr. Gelaman Wazir) who was killed in Pakistan, and was the supporter of ordinary people, where over 50 members participated.

ACA management recorded a video on 20th of July 2024 and posted on ACA’s WhatsApp Group reg the fund which ACA still owes from Rotherhithe Afghan Group and other people and encouraged everyone to donate as much as they can to pay the loan off.

ACA managed to purchase a building for the community to use as a cultural center,

The fund was raised through community members and other Masjids, ACA is in the process of seeking planning permission for SCC,

ACA’s management has played a mediator role on several occasions where there have been disagreements and conflicts between 2 parties and management to resolve it successfully.

ACA has been sharing the details of those members on their request on a monthly basis who are looking for a job on ACA’s WhatsApp Group and encourages other members to either employ them or refer them to those who are in need of staff, CA managed to find jobs for over 15 members so far.

ACA also shared the contact details of some recruitment agencies and other work palaces on ACA’s WhatsApp Group to apply for a job. such as Gunstones Bakery, Pretty Little Thing and Staffline m&s warehouse.

ACA has organized cultural and religious events and ceremonies several times as and when required.

One of ACA’s qualified and professional members of ACA (Eng Gaznawi) lodged Planning permission for the building which ACA purchased for change of use.

ACA received a correspondence form SCC with some further questions reg ACA’s Planning Permission Application in Aug 2024. ACA management informed its members of the correspondence via ACA’s WhatsApp Group and invited members for a general meeting, ACA booked Abaseen Restaurant on 13 of Oct 2024 where members could come and discuss the questions. Over 10 member inc ACA’s management attended and discussed the question after an effective, consultation, Eng Ghaznawi who already drafted the replies shared it with the members and said that he would amend it accordingly and share it on Planning Permission WhatsApp Group, once it was read and agreed then it will be send to Micheal Chain who is in charge of ACA;s Planning Permission at SCC, ACA has sent the reply, which Michael Chain confirmed it safe receipt.

After being granted Planning Permission for the purchased building which ACA intends to use as a cultural center. ACA management met and agreed to change its name to Ummah Center on the 18th of Dec 2024. The Charity Commission and Bank were informed. Organization approved ACA’s new name.

Grant Policy

Financial Performance

ACA took a holistic approach and managed to raise over £181.000.00 since Oct 2023 on top of £40.000.00 through its members, shops, masjids, friends and relatives successfully to meet the deadline for 21st of Dec 2023.ACA managed to pay the Landlord the full amount of £210.000.00. and acquired the building (Hallcar Tavern 2 Carwood Grove Sheffield S4) to use it as a community centre The trustees present the financial summary for the reporting period:

AFGHAN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 March 2024

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of AFGHAN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION (the trust) for the year ended 31 March 2024.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the trustees of the trust (and also its directors for the purpose of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (the 2006 Act).

Having satisfied myself that the financial statements of the trust are not required to be audited under Part 6 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independence examination, I report in respect of my examination of the trust’s financial statement carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act). In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner’s statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. Accounting records were not kept in respect of the trust as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or

  2. The financial statements do not accord with those records; or

  3. The financial statements do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

  4. The financial statements have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.

The trustees acknowledge their responsibilities to comply with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 with respect to accounting records and the preparation of financial statements.

The members have not required the Charity to obtain an audit of its financial statements for the year in question in accordance with section 476.

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions applicable to companies subject to the small companies regime.

The financial statements were approved by the Trustees on 22 January 2025.

1 Accounting policies

1.1 Charity Information

AFGHAN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION is a charity, registered in England and Wales, charity registration number 1192657. The registered office is 3 STANDISH BANK SHEFFIELD S5 8YB.

1.2 Average number of employees

During the year the average number of employees was 1 (2023: 1).

1.3 Basis of Preparation

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with applicable accounting standards in the United Kingdom, including the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) (FRS 102), and in compliance with the Charities Act 2011.

1.4 Going Concern

The trustees have assessed the charity’s financial position and are satisfied that it remains a going concern. The financial statements have been prepared on this basis.

1.5 Income Recognition

Income is recognized when the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received, and the amount can be reliably measured.

1.6 Expenditure Recognition

Expenditure is accounted for on an accrual basis.
