Marwick Hall 2024/2025 Chair’s Report
The Marwick Hall continues to be a central point for Puttenham Village, with Puttenham Infant School being the primary user during the week, as well as community events and private hire for birthday parties and societies at evenings and weekends.
At the end of the last year, we renegotiated our contract with the Good Shepherd Trust (of which the school is now a part) and so far it has remained business as usual. We are working with them to ensure payment is received on time going forward, as on a few occasions it has been missed. The hall remains used exclusively by the school Monday to Friday, 8.30am - 3.15pm during term time, and is occupied by after-school clubs three afternoons per week.
Again, we have seen a steady stream of private bookings this year from school parents for children’s parties as well as local organisations. Youth Club continues to use the hall twice a month, which is a lovely and important way to bring a different age group in the village together.. The Annual Village Lunch, organised by the community group, was hosted in the hall once again, as well as the over-60s Christmas lunch. Occasions like these are key to our village and we are pleased to provide the space to support them. The hall was also used on Bonfire Night too, which is certainly the biggest event in the village calendar!
The Safari Supper returned this year after a break, and was an enormous success. It is really the only fundraiser we have for the hall, and the ticket sales combined with raffle tickets brought in a massive £1,000. A huge thank you to the Prichards for organising it so well, as well as the villagers for hosting and/or attending. We have booked in the next date already and hope it proves as popular.
In the meantime, however, we are planning a Wine Tasting evening in April which is already getting booked up. Rupert Perkins from the village has been working with a couple of our committee members to provide some excellent wines and information for attendees, as well as cheese and nibbles. All money made from this will also go to the hall.
Energy costs remain high, particularly through the winter months, and we continue to look at ways we can reduce outgoings. As always, there have been a few general repairs but fortunately we have not had any major problems. We will be looking at some updates to the hall next year, in particular LED lighting and perhaps a redecoration. WiFi continues to be looked into, as a few hurdles keep appearing but we are confident it shall be in place in 2025; this will be well received by hirers.

We saw a large new car park installed this year behind the school, which is excellent news for the hall, as well as the village in general, as it allows for much easier and safe parking for a larger number of vehicles, as well as having electric charging points. Many thanks to the Parish Council for making this happen.
Finally, the time came for Jackie to officially step down earlier this year. Although we have no doubt that questions will still arise, hopefully Jackie can now enjoy some well deserved “responsibility-free” time! As a mark of our appreciation, and on behalf of the village, we installed a plaque in the hall with the names of the previous committee members, which is just a small token of our thanks for their years of service to the community.
As a committee, we recognise the value the hall offers to our village and the need to continue to look after it, as well as enhance it to best serve the community.
