## **Trustees’ Annual Report**
## **Reporting period: 1 January 2025 – 31 December 2025**
## **Objectives and Public Benefit**
The British Indian Colorectal Surgical Society (BICSS) is established to promote excellence in colorectal surgery through education, training, mentorship, and academic collaboration.
The trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty under section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance when planning and carrying out the charity’s activities.
The charity’s purposes are:
- To promote and educate British surgeons and trainees of Indian origin through professional development and mentorship
- To fund, assist, and contribute to academic and medical research in collaboration with institutions in India aimed at improving knowledge and treatment of bowel disease
- To advance public education through information campaigns, collaborative research, and registry development to improve colorectal cancer outcomes among British Asian populations
- To improve the education of healthcare professionals through exchange fellowships, specialist colorectal nurse training, and online modular postgraduate courses in colorectal surgery in collaboration with universities
## **Activities and Achievements**
The Annual Scientific Meeting and Annual General Meeting were held on **23 November 2025** at **Cranfield University, Milton Keynes** , with approximately **45–50 delegates** in attendance.
The programme consisted of high-quality academic and organisational presentations addressing contemporary colorectal surgical practice within the NHS, management of complex cases, and service delivery challenges. The interactive nature of the meeting enabled detailed clinical discussion and knowledge exchange.
The invited international speaker was **Mr Venkat Munnikrishnan** , Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, India. He delivered a keynote lecture on advances in rectal cancer management and robotic colorectal surgery, drawing on his experience across multiple robotic platforms. The lecture was well received and stimulated active academic discussion.
Trainee education and mentorship remained a core focus of the Society. A trainee who was successful at the ST3 selection process delivered a presentation on portfolio development and interview preparation, providing practical guidance to junior colleagues.
Regular educational webinars focusing on specific colorectal surgery topics for UK and international trainees have been initiated and are being coordinated by **Mr Nachiket Joshi** .
## **Governance and Management**
The charity is governed in accordance with its constitution by a Board of Trustees. The permanent trustees during the reporting period were:

- **Mr Ramana Reddy Kallam** – Treasurer
- **Mr Sushil Maslekar** – Secretary
The trustees met regularly throughout the year and ensured appropriate governance, strategic oversight, and financial control. Any conflicts of interest were declared and managed in accordance with the constitution.
## **Membership and Engagement**
The Society maintained an active and growing membership. A trainee WhatsApp group was established to facilitate communication, peer support, and mentorship.
Membership fees were reviewed at the AGM, and it was unanimously agreed to maintain the annual membership fee at **£100** . Members agreed that payment of annual fees by all members is essential to support the charity’s educational and fellowship activities. Members were encouraged to set up annual standing orders to support financial sustainability.
## **Financial Review**
The annual accounts were presented at the AGM by the Treasurer, **Mr Abhiram Sharma** . There was **expenditure to the tune of £4658.67** during the reporting period. The accounts were reviewed and unanimously approved by the members present.
The trustees confirm that the charity’s funds are held securely and are applied solely in furtherance of the charity’s objectives.
## **Plans for Future Periods**
The Society is in the final stages of launching its official website, which will act as a central platform for member engagement, educational resources, fellowship opportunities, and dissemination of academic activity.
Travelling fellowship schemes are being developed in collaboration with NHS Trusts and Indian training institutions. These fellowships will enable reciprocal observational and training opportunities for surgeons and trainees in both the UK and India.
The Society also plans to organise simulation-based and cadaveric training courses in partnership with Indian institutions to support the education and professional development of future colorectal surgeons.
