**57west.org.uk** ## **57 West & Clarence Road Baptist Church Charity number 1192598 Annual Report January – December 2022** ## **Purpose & Vision** Our purpose is to nurture an emerging missional church among adults who are experiencing homelessness or are vulnerably housed in Southend. In partnership with God, each other and the wider family of God, we seek to express church through sharing the unchanging Gospel of Jesus in new ways through: - Being a welcoming, loving and inclusive community - Being whole-life oriented, where God’s invitation is received to live ‘life in fullness’ - Being a community intent on realising God’s purposes and God’s plans for Southend-on-Sea ## **Church Trustees** Trustees: Pamela Davies (Minister), Chris Warner (Treasurer), John Raine, Juliet Kilpin, Stuart Elliot (Secretary), Peter Neale, Ray Larkin. Volunteer & Premises Co-ordinator: Julie McEvoy’s role continued to include a shared responsibility for Community Development this year. ## **Volunteering** Trustees: 7 Daytime drop in volunteers: 6 Evening drop in volunteers: 6 Course leaders: 2 Community volunteers: 4 Our volunteer team grew significantly over the course of the year, with new volunteers joining us and existing volunteers taking on additional responsibilities outside of their main activities or facilitating additional group sessions. Our team members attended level 2 & 3 Safeguarding Training at local Baptist Churches in Southend. ## **Activities** This year we have: 1 **57west.org.uk** - Made 5 referrals to Christians Against Poverty for support with debt - Contacted Peabody for housing support for 1 community member - Referred 6 people to HARP for housing support - Housed 1 community member through Stephen’s Place - Signposted 20 further guests for mental health support and housing advice - Referred 1 community member to CAST for guidance on being granted refugee status - Helped 1 community member to open a bank account and explore their recourse to public funds - Signposted 15 community members to SVP and One Love for food provision and housing support - Given pastoral care to 17 community members - Made 6 welfare calls - Supplied 20 food bank vouchers - Provided 6 food parcels - Supplied 26 takeaway coffees and food provision for those who are rough sleeping - Supplied 21 sleeping bags - Supplied 2 ‘winter essentials’ packs including hats, scarves and gloves - Supplied 4 blankets ## **Partnership Working** This year we reopened our community café for four sessions per week, with additional workshops and one to one sessions taking place around this. We have listed our community spaces with Warm Welcome, Your Say Southend (a local directory managed by the Council) and the Southend Homeless Action Network so as many people as possible have access to a safe space. The Street Pastors have signposted adults experiencing homelessness to our Friday night drop in sessions. CAP have partnered with us on a budgeting course and provided debt management advice, Stephen’s Place have partnered with us on a weekly cooking course and we continue to be 2 **57west.org.uk** actively involved with the local Baptist Network as well as the Eastern Baptist Association. ## **Plans for 2023** We have exciting plans for 2023 which include exploring the provision of supported housing for our homeless community members, expanding our community groups so that skills such as cooking, budgeting and wellbeing can be explored in groups on site, considering whether we have capacity to introduce youth provision for the young adults connected to our community and the possible introduction of a weekly prayer group. We will explore these ideas as we have capacity to take on new initiatives and very much have a growth mindset for the year ahead. ## **Finance and Governance** In summer 2022 the communities at 57 West and Clarence Road Baptist Church agreed to merge to form one faith community. The merge process was completed in December 2022, with a weekly Sunday morning service taking place in addition to our usual activities. Our trustee team grew to 7 members who share management responsibility for the premises. Separate accounts were held until the end of the calendar year, at which point CRBC joined the 57 West CIO as resolutions were passed by both communities. ## **Fundraising plan for 2023** As a newly merged charity, we recognise that financial sustainability is of primary importance. We seek to build diversified streams of income through the following: - Appointing a fundraiser to work alongside us on a consultancy basis - Leasing out unused car park spaces during weekdays - Renewing our groups letting processes so that they are more accessible and enable new groups to lease space from us on a tiered charitable / commercial rate - Hosting on site fundraising activities A copy of our accounts for the year January-December 2022 is attached to this report.
