## **Structure, governance and management:** 

The Back Home Project is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, registered as a charity on 1st December 2020. We are governed by a board of trustees that meet every 3-6 months. Trustees are appointed by resolution passed at a meeting of the charity trustees. 

Following the restructuring completed in 2024, services continue to be delivered through our thirdparty partner in Nigeria under a partnership agreement. The structure remains: 

- Otukpo Tech Academy (OTA) is the branding for the teaching organisation in Nigeria (https://www.otukpotech.org/). 

- Teaching services are provided by a third party under a partnership agreement. This organisation provides teachers and staff, and is responsible for the day to day running of Otukpo Tech Academy. The third party is a registered company in Nigeria 

- The Back Home Project funds the work through grants, monitors the teaching, provides oversight and directly owns the equipment. 

This structure has proven effective, delegating responsibilities to those on the ground in Nigeria who are best placed to enable us to meet our objects and aims. 

## **Aims and Objectives:** 

The Back Home Project provides free IT training to young adults in Nigeria, enabling the next generation to drive their own future. 

We do this by running free, in person, IT courses. We teach a programming language and the skills necessary to get a job in the IT industry. To add some context, unemployment for young adults is around 42% in Nigeria. 



## **Our impact in 2025** 

2025 remained a challenging environment to operate in, with an extended power outage of a month during our second bootcamp slowing activities and extending the training timeline. 

Despite that, we met both of the goals we set in 2024. We **ran 2 coding bootcamps** and **introduced AI training into the syllabus** : 

- **Batch 1** ran from March to June 2025, graduating **7 students** at a ceremony held on 28th June 2025. 

- **Batch 2** ran from September 2025 to January 2026, with **12 students** fully equipped and set to graduate at a ceremony scheduled for 13th February 2026. 

Across the two bootcamps a total of **19 web developers** were trained. Skills taught included web development, AI for coding and basic business skills. Since establishment, over **200 students** have now graduated from OTA across the week and long courses, and to date between 7 and 10 of our students are known to have secured jobs, client work or other employment opportunities. 

Beyond the core syllabus, 2025 saw several new teaching methods introduced: 

- **AI in the curriculum.** Students learned to use AI to solve coding problems, learn, debug, refine their code, and generate website content. This proved very helpful and improved student performance. 

- **Design Thinking.** In Batch 2, students were taught a human-centred, iterative approach to building solutions: carrying out primary research and interviews, drawing empathy maps, defining problems and ideating before writing any code. 

- **Client–Developer role-play.** A new business-skills activity mentoring students on how to position themselves for opportunities, negotiate with clients, and close deals. 

The hackathon projects this year were the strongest since the academy’s inception, and in Batch 2 they focused on real problems in the Otukpo community rather than fake projects created by the teaching staff. Student teams carried out extensive fieldwork — one group visited 24 schools and interviewed 130 stakeholders — and built: a **school management system** addressing poor digital infrastructure in local schools; a **platform connecting clients with verified, licensed land surveyors** to tackle land disputes caused by unqualified operators; and an **event management system** for event registration and ticketing. 

In addition to the bootcamps, we ran two short week-long computer literacy courses (January– February and September 2025) to upskill candidates who lack basic IT skills and widen participation, and continued our outreach in local schools — visiting around 20 schools and engaging around 260 students, which drove enrolment and strengthened the academy’s presence in Otukpo. 

In October 2025, the academy moved to a new site, providing a better learning environment that supports focus, growth, collaboration, and reflection. 

## **Support** 

All our courses are completely free and held in person in Nigeria. 

We are grateful for all the support offered from our volunteers and for all the donations we received. The testimonies from our students are proof of the life-changing impact the training continues to make.
