## **Structure, governance and management:**
The Back Home Project is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, registered as a charity on 1st December 2020. We are governed by a board of trustees that meet every 3-6 months. Trustees are appointed by resolution passed at a meeting of the charity trustees.
In 2024, the charity transitioned from offering direct services to its beneficiaries. Services will now be offered through a third party based in Nigeria. The charity retains oversight and provides the funding, and a partnership agreement is in place.
The new structure is:
- Otukpo Tech Academy is the name of the teaching organisation in Nigeria (https://www.otukpotech.org/).
- Teaching services are provided by a third party under a partnership agreement. This organisation provides teaches, staff and is responsible for the day to day running of Otukpo Tech Academy. The third party is a registered company in Nigeria and run by Daniel the current teacher
- The Back Home Project funds the work through grants, monitors the teaching, provides oversight and directly owns the equipment
This new structure streamlines our operations and delegates responsibilities to those on the ground in Nigeria who are best placed to enable us to meet our objects and aims.
## **Aims and Objectives:**
The Back Home Project provides free IT training to young adults in Nigeria, enabling the next generation to drive their own future.
We do this by running free, in person, IT courses. We teach a programming language and the skills necessary to get a job in the IT industry. To add some context, unemployment for young adults is around 42% in Nigeria.
## **Our impact in 2024**
2024 was a challenging year to operate in Nigeria due to rising inflation, unemployment and power supply issues in Nigeria.
Despite that we **ran 2 coding** programmes:
Each programme comprised around **325 hours of intensive training.** Skills taught included HTML, CSS, JavaScript, API integration, Vue.js, PHP, SQL.

From the 2 programmes we graduated a total of **19 web developers.**
In addition to the programmes, we ran short (week long courses) and also hosted outreach events at local schools. One of the challenges we’ve been experiencing is candidates which lack basic IT skills. Historically, we had to reject them for our programmes, but this year we experimented to widen participation. Several week-long computer literacy courses were run which has allowed us to upskill students and widen participation.
## **Support**
All our courses are completely free and held in person at a venue donated by a local businessman in Nigeria.
We are grateful for all the support offered from our volunteers such as volunteering to review students code and for all the donations we received.
## **Our goals for 2025:**
- Deliver 2 bootcamps
- Update the syllabus to include AI training and skills
