## **Structure, governance and management:**
The Back Home Project is a Charitable incorporated organisation, registered as a charity on 1st December 2020. We are run by a board of trustees that meet on a monthly basis.
We employ a teacher, and a teaching assistant who deliver lessons in Nigeria through the Otukpo Tech Academy. Teacher training and additional ad hoc student training is provided by the trustees and volunteers based in the UK remotely.
## **Aims and Objectives:**
The Back Home Project provides free IT training to young adults in Nigeria, enabling the next generation to drive their own future.
To add some context, unemployment for young adults is around 42% in Nigeria.
## **Our impact in 2022**
During our second year of operating we achieved the following:
_Teaching:_
- Ran a C# coding bootcamp which lasted 14 weeks; 4 weeks longer than our first bootcamp, this course went into depth on how to be a backend developer. Feedback we received included - “I have learnt a lot from this course and I appreciate the organisers. Currently I’m working towards building a website that connects musicians together where they get to display their art.”
- Ran three “Introduction to coding” courses. Each course was a week long and 20 students aged 18-29 were trained on how to build basic websites using html, css and javascript.
## _Innovation:_
- Innovated by training students on how to write code on their phones, which is a device most young adults have access to.
- We deployed solar powered computers for use in our courses. These green machines take advantage of the high levels of sunlight in Nigeria to deliver a sustainable technological solution for our students. Thanks to all who contributed and donated!
_Community Engagement and Governance:_
- Engaged with the local community; the teaching venue used was donated by a local hotel, and a local community pastor awarded the certificates to our graduates at the graduation ceremony.
- Three of our trustees performed our first (self-funded) monitoring trip to Nigeria.
All our courses were completely free and held in person.
## **Our goals for 2023:**
- Increase our income in order to reach more young adults
- Run two coding bootcamps
## **Public benefit statement**
The charity continues to provide free IT training that enables individuals to generate a sustainable income and be self-sufficient.
